Why are sme children mre ppular than thers? A classic study explred whether a child’s scial standing is cnnected t hw they explain the behavir f peple arund them — a prcess scientists call attributin (归因).
T test this, researchers carried ut a carefully designed experiment. They invited 41 ppular and 36 unppular children aged 8-10 t take part. The children were shwn a series f pictures describing uncertain scial scenes: sme pictures shwed nging actins, while thers shwed cmpleted actins with negative utcmes. The research methd cnsisted f tw stages: first, the children were asked t make up a stry fr each picture; weeks later, they cmpleted a questinnaire abut the same pictures, chsing frm ptins representing psitive, negative, r neutral (中立的) explanatins.
A detailed study f the cllected stries and questinnaire data (数据) shwed a clear pattern. Ppular children were mre likely t think psitively f thers. They usually regarded negative utcmes as accidents instead f persnal mistakes and believed that thers acted with gd will in unclear situatins. Hwever, unppular children thught in the ppsite way. These tw ways f thinking were clsely related, suggesting that a child’s basic view f the wrld is usually nt easy t change.
Researchers believed this frms a tw-way cycle. Kind thughts tward thers bring friendly behavirs and mre friends, while dubt and negative ideas push friends away. This cycle then influences children’s wrldview and ppularity. The study als fund that lder children may think mre negatively as they develp. It shws hw ur pinins abut thers quietly shape ur scial life.
4.Why did the researchers carry ut the experiment?
      A. T test if kids’ ppularity relates t their explanatin f thers’ behaviur.
      B. T test if ppularity influences kids’ understanding f thers’ actins.

      A. The findings f the experiment.B. The prcess f the experiment.
      C. The backgrund f the experiment.D. The subjects f the experiment.
6.Hw d unppular children usually react t such a picture: a girl falls n the grund and cries with a by standing nearby?
      A. They regard it as an accident.B. They take n side.
      C. They give psitive explanatins.D. They blame the by.

In Octber 2024, Uber driver Jnathan Rinderknecht was charged with purpsely starting a small fire called the Lachman fire in the dry hills f Califrnia. The fire burned a large area f plants befre firefighters arrived, fught it, and believed they had cmpletely put it ut. Hwever, fficials later made a shcking discvery: the fire had nt been truly put ut — it had spread undergrund, burning slwly in hidden spts until strng winds started it again, eventually grwing int the destructive Pacific Palisades fire in January 2025.
The Palisades fire, ne f the mst destructive wildfires in Califrnia that year, killed 12peple and destryed nearly 7,000 huses and buildings n the western edge f Ls Angeles, leaving many residents hmeless. Such fires that cntinue t exist undergrund, burning slwly until cnditins are right t break ut again are called zmbie (僵尸) fires — they are a knwn happening but still nt well understd, with mst previus research fcusing n thse in the Arctic regin.
Unlike zmbie fires in the Arctic, where zmbie fires survive by burning slwly in thick beds f peat (泥炭) in the sil, Califrnia’s dry hills have n such peat. Instead, these hills are cvered by dry areas, which are made up f drught-resistant (抗旱的) bushes and deep-rted trees filled with easily-burned materials. Ls Angeles fficials suspect that the Lachman fire burned int the deep rts f these trees, cntinuing t burn unseen even after firefighters said the surface fire was put ut.
Sptting such hidden zmbie fires is very difficult: heat-imaging devices cannt g deep int the sil effectively, and Califrnia’s dry areas are ften hard t reach. Fr nw, the best ptin seems t be simple: nn-stp mnitring fires that seem t have burned ut, whether satellite imaging r gd ld-fashined bts n the grund. The thing abut zmbie fires is that they are famusly hard t put ut cmpletely.
8.What d we knw abut the Lachman fire in the first paragraph?
      A. It was accidentally started.
      B. It develped int a disastrus fire.
      C. It was cmpletely put ut.
      D. It spread n the grund slwly.
9.Hw des the authr explain Califrnia’s zmbie fires in paragraph 3?
      A. By giving examples.B. By listing figures.
      C. By making cmparisns.D. By raising questins.
10.What is the best way t find zmbie fires accrding t the last paragraph?
      A. Using heat-imaging devices.B. Sftening dry areas effectively.
      C. Building mre fire statins.D. Tracking fires cntinuusly.
11.What is the best title f this passage?
      A. Zmbie Fires: A Hidden Disaster Under the Grund
      B. Zmbie Fires: A Mysterius Happening in the Arctic
      C. The Lachman Fire: A Ptential Danger under the grund
      D. The Pacific Palisades Fire: A Destructive Fire in Califrnia

Mastering Yur Day with Habit Stacking (叠加)
Building gd habits is ften harder than breaking bad nes. Many peple fail because they rely n mtivatin (动力), which is running fast. (16) It is a pwerful technique described by James Clear, which invlves linking a new habit yu want t frm with an existing habit yu already d.
The pattern is simple: “After I [current habit], I will [new habit].” Fr example, if yu want t start reading newspaper but struggle t find time, yu can stack it nt yur mrning cffee rutine. (17) Because drinking cffee is already set in yur daily life, it serves as a helpful reminder fr the new behavir.
Why des this wrk? Our brains lve patterns. When yu attach a new actin t yur brain, yu reduce the pains f starting. Yu dn’t have t rely n willpwer anymre. Yu dn’t need t remember t d it; the previus actin reminds yu. (18)
T carry this ut effectively, start small. Dn’t aim fr massive changes right frm the start. If yu try t stack a 30-minute wrkut after brushing yur teeth, yu might nt feel like it. (19) Once the habit is established, yu can gradually increase the intensity (强度). Keeping ging matters mre in the beginning.
      (20) Building habits is a jurney that includes unexpected difficulties. If yu miss a day, simply get back n track the next day. The gal is nt perfectin, but prgress. By stacking tiny changes, yu can change yur life ne small step at a time.
      A.Finally, be patient with yurself.
B.Instead, try ding just tw push-ups.
C.Yu can read it while drinking yur cffee.
D.Still, yu’re having truble changing yur habits.
E.Finally, mtivatin is als imprtant in frming habits.
F.But successful individuals use a strategy called “habit stacking”.
G.Over time, the tw actins are jined int a single rutine.
