I had been cnsidering giving up. Fr the past eight years, I’ve met with prspective first-year students as a vlunteer interviewer fr my alma mater (母校) . The reprts I submit after the interviews becme part f their admissins file. But acceptance rate f my university is lw and each time I see the wrd “Denied” next t ne f my interviewees’ names at the end f an admissins cycle, I feel a little mre heartbrken.
Dn’t get me wrng. I’ve gtten t knw lads f inspiring kids, and a handful f them were ffered a spt. After a cycle in which nne f my interviewees was green-lighted, thugh, I started t wnder: In expressing my enthusiasm fr my university in interviews, was I ding them a favr r setting them up fr disappintment? Was it fair f me t share an inside lk int my university when mst wn’t have access t it?
Then, ut f the blue, I received a text frm ne f “my” admits, Layla. She thanked me fr getting her int my university. I was tuched, but I mentally dismissed the validity (合理性) f what seemed t be a misguided assumptin f hw the admissins prcess wrks.
We met fr cffee a few mnths later, and she delighted me with a detailed discussin f her classes, her prfessrs, her research, and her friends. Her eyes were bright, her excitement visible. She tld me she had submitted a request t spend 20minutes with her admissins file. I culdn’t understand why she wanted t take the time t lk. Culdn’t she just enjy her time as an admitted student withut being distracted by disturbing questins f whether she belnged?
As it turns ut, Layla learned that the admissins fficer wh first read her file was n the fence abut her but then decided t put her applicatin thrugh fr anther read because f what I’d written in my interview reprt. My vice had made a difference.
Layla fund the relief she’d been lking fr: Why was she here? Did she really matter t this incredible cmmunity? Seeing her put her wrries t rest helped me d the same with my wn. Maybe smetimes we all need t hear that we matter.

B. Disappintment with interviewees’ abilities.
C. Failing t help sme f the prmising kids.

A. T prve the authr’s reprt played a rle.
B. T cnfirm she deserved the admissin.
C. T clarify the authr’s cnfusin.
D. T ease her wrries abut the future.
8.What can we learn frm this passage?

It’s human nature t feel embarrassed fr smene acting cringey— like a friend slipping n a wet flr. It’s a sign f empathy which shapes human cperatin and cnnectin. What happens, thugh, when the secnd persn in this situatin is replaced with a rbt?
Experiencing secndhand embarrassment lights up areas in the human brain assciated with pain and the recgnitin f emtins. Similarly, scial anxiety is linked t heightened empathy, but als cmes with a reduced capacity t actually understand the ther persn’s emtins, knwn as cgnitive empathy. And f curse, the mre scially clse and invested a persn is in anther, the mre intensely they’ll feel this bystander discmfrt.
Interestingly, new research frm Oakridge University fund that humans can have the same srt f secndhand embarrassment when they see a rbt display scial awkwardness.
T test this phenmenn, human subjects were immersed in a virtual envirnment where bth human and rbt avatars were present. The researchers then put these avatars thrugh awkward situatins like stumbling in a crwd r dancing clumsily in public.
Researchers then measured the electrical activity f the sweat glands f the subjects. This crrelates t arusal signals like stress, r ther states f high emtin. Participants als filled ut a questinnaire abut their emtinal respnses t each virtual scial situatin. The data indicates that humans felt self-embarrassment fr bth the human and rbt avatars when they were in a scially awkward scenari, althugh they perceived the situatin as mre “real” fr the human avatar cmpared t the rbt.
Still, the results shw that humans can empathize with rbts in embarrassing situatins, suggesting that humans assume the rbts can be aware f being witnessed and have sme degree f self-cnsciusness based n self-reflectin and self-evaluatin. But it als matters what the rbt lks like: “The appearance f the rbt may affect the empathetic embarrassment because humans empathize mre strngly with mre human-lking rbts and less with mre mechanical-lking rbts when they are mistreated by humans.”
Despite the interesting findings in this recent study, the team frm Oakridge University acknwledges that a larger sample size, as well as real wrld humans and rbts, wuld make the cnclusins mre cnvincing.
“Our study prvides valuable insights int the evlving nature f human-rbt relatinships. As technlgy cntinues t integrate int ur daily lives, understanding the emtinal respnses we have twards rbts is crucial,” Lisa Green, the lead researcher n the prject, said in a press release. “This research pens up new avenues fr explring the bundaries f human empathy and the ptential challenges and benefits f human-rbt interactins.”
9.What des the underlined wrd “cringey” in Paragraph 1 prbably mean?
A. Embarrassing.B. Entertaining.C. Cnfident.D. Hurtful.
10.What des the authr mainly d in Paragraph 2?
A. Intrduce an apprach.B. Explain a cre cncept.
C. Offer a theretical basis.D. Present previus findings.
11.What can we learn frm the study?
A. Rbts’ appearance determines empathetic embarrassment level.
B. Humans think awkward rbts may have self-cnsciusness.
C. States f emtin hld back electrical activities in the brain.
D. Awkward rbts stimulate strnger empathy than humans.
12.What is the main idea f the passage?
A. Scial anxiety plays a key rle in human-rbt interactin.
B. Technlgical develpment is reshaping emtinal bundaries.
C. Rbts’ human-like features shape peple’s emtinal respnses.
D. Humans may extend empathy t rbts in certain scial situatins.

Crucial systems acrss the wrld cllapsed n Friday, triggered by ne mistake in a single cmpany. The pwer cut fCrwdStrike,a giant in the cybersecurity industry, hit banks, airlines, and health-care systems. It may end up being the wrst infrmatin technlgy disaster in histry.
This was nt,hwever,an unfreseeable freak accident,nr will it be the last f its kind. Instead, the devastatin was the inevitable utcme f mdern scial systems that have been designed fr hypercnnected ptimizatin(优化),nt decentralized resilience.
There is ften a trade-ff between maximum ptimizatin and resilience.Cnsider a basic prehistrical scial system in which many humans lived in small, islated bands. What any single persn did wuld have little t n effect n thse living elsewhere. It was an inefficient, basic system but if ne part f the human system failed, few thers were affected.
Thrughut ur advancement as a species, frm building empires t building machines, scial systems have evlved t be mre cnnected and centralized. In the 21st century, the cmbinatin f glbalizatin and digitizatin has created a landscape characterized by the threat f catastrphic, immediate risk.Glbalizatin enables large efficiency gains, where a prduct can be put tgether frm carefully managed links in the glbal supply chain. But thse systems lack resilience.Every link must fit tgether perfectly;the system falls apart if even ne chain breaks.
Centuries ag,the philspher David Hume wrte that we can never be certain that the patterns f the past will remain the patterns f the future. This is especially true in the 21st century as we are betting mre and mre f ur wrld n unstable systems. Can we really trust ur species t flawlessly gvern unimaginably cmplex systems-systems we dn't always fully understand—that can be brught dwn by a single screw-up?
Mdern scieties have discunted the cst f that risk because urcurrent reward systems favr ptimizatin ver resilience.CEOs try t deliver shrt-term imprvements,nt lng-term planning. Nbdy gets reelected by investing in a rainy-day fund.Business leaders are hired r fired based n quarterlyresults.
Even thugh the mdern quest fr ptimizatin has t ften made resilience an afterthught, it is nt inevitable that we cntinue dwn the risky path we're n.And making ur systems mre resilient desn't require ging back t a discnnected, primitive wrld, either. Instead, ur cmplex, intercnnected scieties simply demand that we cmprmise a bit f efficiency in rder t allw a little extra cushin(缓冲).
If scial systems rely n a mre diverse digital array f cmpanies, the scieties will be less vulnerable(脆弱的).Fr the brader set f risks facing glbal sciety, better regulatin is essential t ensure fail-safes,backups,and stress testing—s that ne errr desn't bring dwn entire systems. The CrwdStrike breakdwn is a clear warning that the mdern wrld is fragile by design.S far,we have decided t make urselves vulnerable. That means we can decide differently t.
13.The authr mentins the CrwdStrike mainly t _________________
A. highlight its crucial rle in cybersecurity
B. intrduce an infrmatin technlgy cllapse
C. explain why peple are in a cnnected system
D. indicate predictable failures f the mdern system
14.What can be inferred abut a mre glbalized system?
A. It leads t a highly advanced digitalized netwrk.
B. It tends t priritize adaptability ver prductivity.
C. It enlarges the impact f lcal errrs t a glbal scale.
D. It guarantees immediate ecnmic rewards frparticipants.
15.As fr the future f scial systems, which wuld the authr agree with?
A. The mrediscnnected they are,the mre resilient they will be.
B. Sme efficiency shuld be sacrificed fr mre flexibility.
C. Lng-term planning prevents structural breakdwns.
D. Histry can help peple predict future patterns.
16.Which wuld be the best title fr this passage?
A. Hypercnnectivity:The Price f Perfectin
B. A Wakeful Warning:The Lessn frm CrwdStrike
C. System Cllapse:An Inevitable Technlgy Disaster

If yu had t save the life f a persn r an animal, which wuld yu chse? Mst adults say they wuld pick the persn, but almst half f yung children wuld prefer t save the animal, accrding t a study in Pland.
“The finding really surprised us,” says Matti Wilks at the University f Edinburgh, UK. (17) Fr example, a survey f millins f peple in 233 cuntries, mst f them in their 20s and 30s, fund they largely agreed that self-driving cars shuld crash int dgs r cats instead f peple if they had t chse.
(18) Using a ty railway and Leg figures, Wilks and her clleagues presented 170 children aged 6 t 9 in an urban part f Pland with scenaris based n a thught experiment called the trlley prblem. The children had t decide whether t direct a runaway rail car dwn ne f tw tracks s that it crashed int a Leg persn r a Leg animal — either a dg r chimpanzee. (19) Abut 42 percent f the children wanted t save the dg and make the rail car cllide with the persn, cmpared with just 17 percent f adults. Abut 28 percent f children als priritised the chimpanzee ver the persn, cmpared with 11 percent f adults.
“Children learn frm their parents, teachers and thers that it’s really imprtant t care fr thers, but it may be easier fr them t learn this as a blanket rule that applies t bth humans and animals,” says Karri Neldner at the Max Planck Institute fr Evlutinary Anthrplgy in Germany. (20) “Hwever, as they get lder, they might pick up n cultural narratives that tell us it’s really imprtant t care fr ther peple,” says Neldner.
(21) When she asked Australian children aged 4 t 10 t rder pictures f peple, animals, plants and bjects accrding t hw much they cared abut them, the 4-year-lds tended t care mre abut dgs, cats and dlphins than abut classmates, plice fficers and sick peple, but this was reversed in the 10-year-lds.
The reasn children value dgs s highly is prbably due t familiarity, says Wilks. Her studies have fund that children wh spent mre time with dgs were mre likely t say they wuld save a dg ver a persn.
A.Mst adults view human life as especially precius.
B.Her research suggests this shift starts by the age f 10.
C.Surprisingly, children were mre likely t save a dg ver a persn.
D.As a result, they shw n strng preference fr saving either, she says.
E.Hwever, grwing evidence suggests many yung children feel differently.
F.The experiment was repeated with 178 Plish adults (18-50) fr cmparisn.
G.Abut 28 percent f children aged 5 t 9 said they wuld save a dg ver a persn, cmpared with 8 percent f adults.

41.Discvered by Amateurs
Sme astrnmers spend their entire careers lking fr new discveries in space, but a 10-year-ld Canadian girl fund ne n her first try. In January, 2011, Kathryn Gray, wh ften studied stars, was lking at recent pictures f uter space and cmparing them t pictures taken years earlier. The pictures were just thusands f tiny spts f light, but Gray sptted a star that lked different in the recent pictures. Culd it pssibly be a supernva (超新星) ? Usually a supernva is brighter, and it becmes visible thrugh a telescpe due t the brightness. Later Gray’s discvery was cnfirmed, and she became the yungest persn t discver a supernva.
Thrughut histry, imprtant discveries in astrnmy have been made by amateurs. An early example is William Herschel, wh discvered Uranus in 1781. Uranus had been bserved befre, but expert astrnmers thught it didn’t belng t ur slar system. When Herschel saw it with a telescpe he had designed and built himself, he realized that it was rbiting the sun. This meant that Uranus was a planet. And s, the map f ur night sky was changed frever.
Then in 1930, a majr discvery was made by a 24-year-ld man, a farmer’s sn, with n cllege educatin r frmal training in astrnmy. Clyde Tmbaugh built a hmemade telescpe using instructins frm an article in a by’s magazine. He used t draw detailed pictures f the surfaces f Mars and Jupiter. He then sent the pictures t Dr. V. M. Slipher at the Lwell Observatry, wh was s impressed and ffered him a jb n his team. Within a year, Tmbaugh discvered a ninth planet, Plut. It was regarded as a planet fr 76 years, but scientists decided in 2006 that Plut didn’t meet all f the criteria fr a true planet. It was then cnsidered t be a dwarf planet.
Jhn Dbsn is anther influential amateur astrnmer because he enabled s many thers t take up astrnmy as a hbby. In 1956, after cnstant attempts, he built a pwerful telescpe ut f lw-cst materials, such as paper tubes used in cnstructin. With affrdable tls like Dbsn’s telescpe, mre amateurs tday have the technlgy that is needed t make discveries f their wn.

(2) What did Clyde Tmbaugh d befre sending his pictures t Dr. V. M. Slipher?________________________________________________
