China is widely knwn fr its ancient civilizatin (文明) which has cntinued all the way thrugh int mdern times, in the face f many ups and dwns in its histry. There are many reasns why this has been pssible, but ne f the main factrs has been the Chinese writing system.
At the beginning, written Chinese was a picture-based language. It dates back several thusand years t the use f lnggu-animal bnes and shells n which marks were carved (雕刻) by ancient Chinese peple. In ancient China, characters began as simple drawings f natural bjects — trees, rivers, muntains and hills, hrses and xen, human beings themselves, etc. The earliest character-like drawings are “pictgraphic” in quality. Cmpared with ther scripts (字体) in the wrld, Chinese characters appeared much earlier with the first evidence f the characters arund 5,000 r mre years ld. Mre than 50 kinds f carved marks appeared arund the Banp Site and ther nearby places. They were shaped and rdered in a certain rule and they have the same characteristics as tday’s simple characters — scientists judge them t be the riginal Chinese characters.
By the Shang Dynasty (arund 1600-1046 BCE) , these marks had becme a well-develped writing system. Over the years, the systems develped int different frms, as it was a time when peple were divided gegraphically, leading t many kinds f dialects (方言) and characters. This, hwever, changed under Emperr Qin Shi Huang f the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BCE).
Emperr Qin Shi Huang united the six majr states int ne cuntry where the Chinese writing system began t develp in ne directin. That writing methd was f great imprtance in uniting the Chinese peple and culture.
Written Chinese has als becme an imprtant means by which China’s present is cnnected with its past. Peple in mdern times can read the classic wrks which were written by Chinese in ancient times. Chinese character, therefre, is a bridge between the present and the past.
Tday, the Chinese writing system is still an imprtant part f Chinese culture. As China plays a greater rle in the wrld, an increasing number f internatinal students are beginning t shw their lve t China’s culture and histry thrugh this amazing language.
18.Why did the writing system develp int different frms in ancient times?
      A. Because it was a picture-based language.
      B. Because it was in different animal bnes.
      C. Because Emperr Qin Shi Huang changed it.
      D. Because peple were gegraphically divided.
19.The wrd “uniting” in Paragraph 4 prbably means “________”.
      A. increasing r becming a larger grup
      B. jining and getting tgether t make ne
      C. cnnecting r bridging the writing systems
      D. guiding and helping t the ne directin
      20.Hw did Chinese writing develp?
      A. Frm a picture-based language t different writing systems t united system.
      B. Frm simple characters t simple drawing rules t different writing frms.
      C. Frm clrful carved marks t different characters t simple bject drawings.
      D. Frm simple writing rule t different scripts t well-develped writing system.

Many kids say they dn’t like the taste f a grup f vegetables such as brccli (西兰花) and cabbage. Nw Australian scientists think there culd be a gd reasn fr thse s-called “picky” (挑剔的) eating habits f kids.
Scientists fund ut that if sme peple eat certain vegetables like brccli, their muths prduce bad smells. This can happen when the chemicals (化学物质) in the vegetables mix with a persn’s saliva (唾液). The mre f these smells a child’s muth makes, the less they like the taste f the vegetables. But why d sme peple’s muths make mre f these smells than ther peple’s muths?
T find ut, the team cllected saliva samples (样本) frm 98 pairs f parents and children. Every persn’s saliva has a different mixture f bacteria (细菌) in it. The researchers believe this decides hw much f the smells a persn prduces while eating the vegetables. Maybe ur picky eaters are simply thse wh have the mixture that increases the smell f chemicals.
Sme scientists put sme cabbage pwder in the saliva f grwn-ups and kids. They fund ut that peple wh were nt family members prduced different bad smells. Even thugh parents and their children made similar smells, the parents didn’t think the vegetable tasted as bad as their kids. That’s because adults may have eaten them mre and are used t the taste.
Experts suggest many fd dislikes can make a change after trying fr many times. This means a picky eater may cme t enjy a fd they avid if they try it enugh times. Fr example, yur child hates cabbage. If yu ffer them cabbage enugh times, in different frms, they may finally cme t enjy it. What’s mre, children learn by bservatin. If they see yu eating healthy fds, they’ll be mre likely t see yu as a gd example. Hwever, watching yu eating lts f sda, snack fds, and dessert will make them wnder why they can’t d the same.
21.What may make many kids dislike certain vegetables accrding t Australian scientists?
      A. The taste f these vegetables.B. The smells their muths make.
      C. The names f these vegetables.D. The eating habits f these kids.
22.What is the purpse f the study mentined in paragraph 3?
      A. T discver the different mixture f bacteria in a persn’s saliva.
      B. T explain why sme peple dislike the smell f sme vegetables.
      C. T make sure sme parents and their children make similar smells.
      D. T find ut why sme peple’s muths make mre f the smells.
23.What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
      A. Children shuld avid the fds they dislike.
      B. Children will never change their eating habits.
      C. Parents shuld set their children a gd example.
      D. Parents need t change their children’s eating habits.
24.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the passage?
      A. Wh Can Change Children’s Dislikes f Vegetables?
      B. Why Children Dislike Eating Certain Vegetables?
      C. What Decides Children’s Certain Eating Habits?
      D. Hw t Help Children t Eat Mre Vegetables?
