Olivier Chastel, a bilgist, has spent 25 summers studying black-legged kittiwakes (三趾鸥) in Svalbard,

Chastel visits the kittiwake living place each year frm mid-May t early July, where arund 400 pairs f
kittiwakes make their hmes.
The researchers use a small bat t reach the birds’ living area. They catch birds using a lng stick fr fishing

study in the labratry. Since 2000, they have been mnitring 180 nests annually, recrding which birds return,
when they have babies, and hw many eggs they lay.
Chastel’s wrk has displayed serius prblems. PFASs, chemicals fund in everyday items like nn-stick pans
and clthes that keep ut water, get int bird eggs and lwer hatching (孵化) rates. These substances als affect
hrmnes (荷尔蒙) and lwer male birds’ ability t have babies. While sme ld pllutants like DDT have drpped,
newer chemicals are increasing, creating an nging challenge.
Pllutant levels in kittiwakes at first fell due t internatinal laws, but since 2015 they have risen again. This
increase is linked t warmer Atlantic waters mving int Arctic areas and bringing different fish species, new
fishes with mre pllutants than the birds’ traditinal fd fish. This turn in fd shws hw the Arctic ecsystem

The landscape has changed dramatically t. Sea ice, nce present in May, has nt been seen since 2009.

A. Lcal industries have increased pllutin. B. Internatinal rules have been taken away.
C. Warmer waters have brught plluted fish. D. The birds have changed their migratin ways.
11. What is Chastel’s attitude twards his wrk?

A recent study frm the University f Califrnia, San Francisc (UCSF) reflects that certain snacks may be
mre likely t cause winter weight gain. The research suggests that dietary fat can influence hw ur bdies

unsaturated fat t survive the cld, which causes plant-eating animals t cnsume and stre mre unsaturated fat.
Therefre, ur bdies might be set t expect mre unsaturated fat as the days get shrter
The study was carried ut n mice expsed (暴露于) t changing perids f light and dark t cpy the passing
seasns. Mice n a balanced diet displayed nrmal winter behavir, beginning t run n their wheels as sn as it
gt dark. Hwever, mice fed with a high-fat diet tk lnger t wake up and started running lng after the
man-made sunset, suggesting their internal (内部) clcks were slightly ut f sync with the light cycles.
Levine ntes that althugh the study fcused n mice, the link between dietary fat and the bdy’s internal
clck thrugh PER2 is shared acrss species.
12. What des the UCSF study suggest abut saturated fat?
A. It prduces mre PER2. B. It reduces winter weight gain.
C. It drives the bdy t stre mre fat. D. It helps the bdy burn energy faster.
13. What leads t animals having mre unsaturated fat in cld days?
A. Natural adaptatin. B. Fd chain. C. Human influence. D. Unbalanced diet.
14. What des the underlined phrase “ut f sync with” prbably mean in paragraph 5?
A. Unfamiliar with. B. Faster r slwer than C. Separated frm. D. Out f cntrl f.
15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. PER2: The Key t Cntrlling Bdy Fat. B. Seasnal Changes and Human Dietary Habits.
C. Mice’s Internal Clcks and Seasnal Adaptatin. D. A Latest Study: Dietary Fat and Bdy Respnse.
