She is nw abut six mnths int varius prjects that have invlved watching vide clips, writing detailed captins (字幕), and rating the quality f vides created by AI. She has mixed feelings abut the wrk. “I jked with my friends I’m training AI t take my jb smeday,” she says.
The 61-year-ld Peter. Valdes-Dapena, an autmtive jurnalist, nw spends 20 t 30 hurs a week reviewing news articles written by AI. He finds the wrk challenging and says it has imprved his wn writing. Wh grws ur fd? This seemingly simple questin is getting harder t answer in a wrld where ur fd crsses brders t get t ur plate. Tday, nly ne in seven cuntries are fd self-sufficient acrss key fd grups, s researchers need a glbal view t understand wh farms ur fd.
The cntributin f small and industrial-scale farming t glbal fd supply has attracted much attentin and debate. Many believe industrial farming is the fundatin f glbal security. But when we lift the lid n ur glbalized fd system, the stry is very different.
By studying prductin and trade patterns f 198 cuntries, researchers have fund that it’s small-scale farms (typically smaller than 20 hectares), nt huge industrial peratins, that supprt peple’s daily diets. Small-scale farmers cntribute a third f the fd cnsumed in high-incme natins such as the UK and the US. Despite small-scale farms making up less than 1 percent f Australian farms, they supply arund 15 percent f their fd needs. They als make up the majrity f the fd supply in 46 f the cuntries studied by the research, meeting the bulk f fd needs fr 5 billin peple every day.
But farmers f small farms ften find themselves facing unstable land rights, climate risks, unequal trade terms, and unfair glbal trade rules. The research, published in the latest State f Fd and Agriculture reprt frm the UN’s Fd and Agriculture Organizatin, shws that such risks are nt nly cntained t dmestic fd systems but will crss brders. Fd and land insecurity fr small-scale farmers means fd insecurity fr us all.
Safeguarding prductin frm smallhlders relies nt nly n dmestic effrts t prtect farmer livelihds but transbundary measures t secure their land rights and access t markets, such as land titles, small lans and living wages. Nw that we knw wh grws ur fd, we must give farmers equal pririty in natinal farming plicy, within and beynd ur brders.
28. What des the underlined phrase “lift the lid n” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Uncver.B. Prtect.C. Suspect.D. Ignre.

B. Small-scale farms’ key rle in glbal fd supply.
C. The intrductin f small-scale farms in Australia.
D. The specific data n fd supply frm the research.
30. What can we learn abut small-scale farmers frm paragraph 4?
A. Their land rights are secured glbally.
B. They receive fair treatment in wrld trade.
C. They mainly prvide fd fr lcal markets.
D. Their sufferings may affect glbal fd security.
31. What is the authr’s main purpse in writing the text?
A. T explain glbal fd insecurity.
B. T cmpare tw farming mdels.
C. T explain hw t increase fd prductin.
D. T appeal fr mre attentin t small-scale farms.

As the wrld’s appetite fr electrnic devices grws ever bigger, e-waste is raising alarms. Accrding t a UN reprt, 62 millin tns f e-waste was generated in 2022, enugh t fill 1.5 millin trucks. Mst f it ended up in landfills r was burnt. There is als a shcking ecnmic lss, as an estimated 62 billin US dllars’ wrth f reusable resurces — including rare earth elements — are lst in the prcess. Currently, just 1% f the wrld’s demand fr these elements is met by e-waste recycling.
With e-waste rising five times faster than recycling rates, new slutins t the prblem are urgent. Aquafade culd be ne — a new type f plastic that culd be used t cver electrnics such as keybards and disslves (溶解) cmpletely in water in abut six hurs when the device is n lnger needed, making it easier t recycle the mst valuable cmpnents.
The inspiratin fr Aquafade came frm dishwasher pds (凝珠). T explre further, Wangsaputra and c-inventr Jn Sang Lee teamed up with tw material scientists at Imperial Cllege Lndn. They identified a fd-safe, bidegradable material — PVOH. But PVOH alne was nt sufficient t slve the prblem. The main challenge was t make a material that can disslve in water but is als waterprf (防水). After a series f attempts, they made a special bidegradable cating applied t the PVOH uter shell. This new material — PVOH with the special waterprf cating — is exactly Aquafade. Its disslving prcess is simple; nce yu take ff just ne screw frm the prduct, that creates a leak, and when yu put it in water, it will disslve after five t six hurs, leaving behind milky water and the mst valuable electrnic parts f the prduct.
Fr nw, Aquafade is duble the cst f regular plastic. But Wangsaputra said that mass prductin will make it cheaper. Peter Edwards, prfessr at the University f Oxfrd, wh’s nt invlved with Aquafade, called it “an interesting develpment,” but wndered whether the disslved plastic will persist in the envirnment and ultimately end up as micrplastic.
32. What d we knw abut e-waste frm paragraph 1?
A. It has been effectively recycled wrldwide.
B. Its annual prductin has reduced sharply.
C. Mst f rare earth elements in it are recycled.
D. The way t deal with it causes great ecnmic lss.
33. What is an advantage f Aquafade?
A. It disslves in water t help recycling.
B. It makes devices wrk mre efficiently.
C. It helps prduce cheaper electrnic prducts.
D. It prevents plastic frm entering the envirnment.
34. What is mainly presented in paragraph 3?
A. The limitatins f PVOH.B. The creatin f Aquafade.
C. The benefits f the waterprf cating.D. The cmparisn f tw materials.
35. What can be inferred abut the future applicatin f Aquafade?
A. It will sn take the place f regular plastic.
B. Its prductin cst will stay high in the future.
C. It has ptential but still faces uncertainties.
D. It has gained wide recgnitin frm experts.

I’ve lved waterclr since childhd — my desk cvered in paint tubes and sketchbks. On weekends, I’d paint lake sunsets r backyard flwers. Last year, winning first prize in a schl cmpetitin strengthened my passin, s I jined the art club.
But the first meeting surprised me. Our new teacher, Ms. Hayes, a famus artist, was as strict as a ruler. Unlike my ld teacher wh praised every effrt, she fcused nly n perfectin. Her first assignment: paint fresh strawberries with real texture (纹理) and clr. I spent three nights n it, puring my energy int each strke (笔触). Prud, I culdn’t wait t shw her.
At the next meeting, everyne laid ut their paintings. Ms. Hayes scanned each wrk. Seeing mine, she frwned and pulled me aside.
“Yur painting has n heart,” she said, pinting at the lifeless strawberries, “Yu mix clrs like a rainbw, but yu paint what yu think they lk like, nt hw they make yu feel. Waterclr is abut puring emtin nt paper — that’s what I want yu t remember.”
I std speechless, face reddening. Her wrds hurt but wke me up — I’d fcused n winning instead f lving art. I ndded, and she turned away. I didn’t rush t leave. I lked at ther students’ emtinal paintings and realized I’d been s prud f my perfect strkes that I frgt my heart.
I tk my painting hme, tears blurring my visin as grandma’s strawberries flashed in my mind. I had wasted my lve fr art n empty perfectin. Hlding my brush tightly, I made up my mind t paint again — nt fr skill, nt fr praise, but fr the warm lve hidden in thse berries. Yet a fld f dubt washed ver me: wuld I finally put my heart int it? Wuld Ms. Hayes ever see my true feelings?
