As yu sit in a lecture, pen and ntebk ready, yu start t take dwn every wrd. But befre yu get t absrbed in writing, here’s an intriguing (有趣的) piece f science: Taking ntes wrd-fr-wrd may nt be the best way t truly remember what yu learn.
Research suggests that cpying infrmatin t clsely can actually harm yur brain’s ability t prcess and remember it, says Dr. Andrew Blake, a cgnitive scientist at Stanfrd University. We get the details but ften miss the key understanding.
Writing ntes can transfer memry. This happens in tw ways: We either shift the respnsibility f remembering t the ntes themselves, r we’re s ccupied by the act f cpying that we lse fcus n the material being taught.
The first issue is memry dependency. When peple knw their ntes are available, they’re less likely t put effrt int absrbing the cntent. Similarly, if yu save an imprtant passwrd in yur phne, yu’re less likely t memrize it since yur brain feels there’s n need. This wrks well-until yu can’t pen yur phne.
The secnd issue is distractin. Taking ntes can distract us frm the speaker’s emphasis, gestures, and verall message. The fcus mves away frm actively listening and interpreting the material t simply recrding wrds. As we cncentrate n writing, we miss the speaker’s clues that culd help us get the main ideas, thus reducing ur engagement with the cntent. We fcus n the exact wrding, structuring the layut, and keeping ur handwriting readable, all f which redirects ur attentin away frm truly understanding the lecture.
Hwever, nte-taking can strengthen memry-when dne thughtfully. If yu summarize key ideas r add persnal reflectins, yu’re engaging with the material in a way that strengthens memry. Cmbining infrmatin requires prcessing, which deepens understanding. Anther advantage f gd nte-taking is that it creates a dependable reference. Memry is imperfect, influenced by emtins and ther experiences, s crrect ntes serve as a trustwrthy reminder f what was actually cvered.
Memry weakens ver time withut practice. Thus, effective nte-taking, when dne thughtfully, can be an excellent tl fr learning and recalling imprtant infrmatin.
28.What is the purpse f the first paragraph?
      A. T ffer a slutin.B. T present an experience.
      C. T bring up a tpic.D. T give a suggestin.
29.What can we infer abut the effect f taking ntes wrd-fr-wrd?
      A. It helps students remember everything the speaker says.
      B. It makes students fcus t much n writing and miss imprtant ideas.
      C. It imprves students’ ability t understand the main pints.
      D. It makes students mre interested in the lecture.
30.What is the authr’s purpse in writing this article?
      A. T encurage students t stp taking ntes entirely.
      B. T explain the benefits and prblems f different nte-taking methds.
      C. T shw that memry is mre imprtant than nte-taking.
      D. T criticize students wh take ntes during lectures.
      C
Runners wh meet visual and auditry distractins (视觉和听觉分心) may be mre likely t suffer leg injuries, accrding t a research by the Assciatin f Academic Physiatrists in Las Vegas. Runners ften lk fr distractins frm the task at hand. Whether it is music, texting, daydreaming, taking in the sights, r prpping a bk up n the treadmill (跑步机), mre ften than nt a distractin is welcme. But, researchers frm the University f Flrida have recently discvered that thse distractins may lead t injury.
Daniel Herman, MD, PhD, assistant prfessr at University f Flrida, and his team carried ut a research n the effect f visual and auditry distractins n 14 runners t judge what effect, if any, these distractins wuld have n things such as heart rate, hw much a runner breathes per minute, hw much xygen is cnsumed by the bdy, the speed in which runners put frce t their bdies, and the frce the grund puts t the runners’ bdies when they cme in tuch with it.
The runners were all injury free at the time f the research and ran 31 miles each week. Dr. Herman’s team had each participant run n a treadmill three times. The first time was withut any distractins. The secnd time added a visual distractin, during which the runners fcus n a screen shwing different letters in different clrs with the runners having t ntice when a specific letter-clr cmbinatin appeared. The third time added an auditry distractin similar t the visual distractin, with the runners having t ntice when a particular wrd was spken by a particular vice.
When cmpared t running withut distractins, the participants had faster applicatin f frce t their left and right legs, called lading rate, with auditry and visual distractins. They als experienced increased frce frm the grund n bth legs, called grund reactin frce, with auditry distractins. Finally, the runners are likely t breathe heavier and have higher heart rates with visual and auditry distractins than withut any distractins at all.
“Running in envirnments with different distractins may affect running perfrmance and injury risk,” explains Dr. Herman “Smetimes these things cannt be avided, but yu may be able t make the effect less. Fr example, when running a new rute in a nisy envirnment such as during a destinatin marathn, yu may nt listen t smething which may require mre attentin-like a new sng.”
Dr. Herman’s team will cntinue t study the relatinship between distracted running and leg injuries, and any effect this relatinship has n different training techniques that use auditry r visual signals.
31.What des the wrd “prpping” mst likely mean in the first paragraph?
      A. turning ver pages quickly
      B. carrying smething while mving
      C. placing smething in a steady psitin
      D. buying a bk fr later use
32.Based n the research, runners with auditry distractins are likely t ________.
      A. breathe heavier and have lwer heart rates
      B. gain a faster speed with slwer lading rates
      C. apply mre frce with less xygen cnsumptin
      D. get an increased amunt f grund reactin frce
33.What can we infer frm the passage?
      A. Running with distractins becmes uncmmn nwadays.
      B. Listening t a new sng while running can make the perfrmance better.
      C. Runners are advised t avid distractins in a destinatin marathn.
      D. Runners are mre likely t get injured in an envirnment withut distractins.
34.What is prbably the next task fr Dr. Herman’s team?
      A. What decides training techniques.
      B. What effective ways can cure leg injuries.
      C. Why runners use auditry and visual signals.
      D. Hw distractins shuld be used in training.
      D
The questin f whether it is pssible t separate the artist frm their wrk has been debated fr a lng time. Even thugh psitive critical reviews abut an artist’s behavir can imprve their artistic achievements, peple shuld treat artists as peple wh live apart frm their wrk.
One f the reasns is that even artists have shrtcmings. Like any ther human being, an artist can make mistakes, and we cannt be judgmental f every persn that makes mistakes. Cancel culture with endless criticism is related mre t hw we shuld disregard the artists when they make mistakes than with hw their weaknesses can be used by the artists t create art that is unique.
Perhaps Kevin Hart’s wrds supprt this thught. He asks, “When did we get t a pint where life was suppsed t be perfect? Where were peple suppsed t perate perfectly all the time?” When peple start seeing artists as human beings, they’ll see them fr wh they are and review their behavir nt n the basis f their art but n the basis f their humanity.
It shuld als be nted that there are wrks f art that are inspired by the artist’s experience. Fr example, the themes in the Harry Ptter bks are s cnnected with J. K. Rwling’s wicked wrldview that it is virtually impssible t tell the tw frm each ther. Since canceling artists based n their wrldview wuld mean the receptin t their art will suffer, artists becme nervus and unwilling t express themselves, which will kill creativity, eventually leading t the death f art. Cmedians, singers r painters wh shuld be integrating cntemprary issues with their wrks becme bred, and art stps functining as the scial mirrr it ught t be.
An artist wh makes mistakes still has art with intrinsic (内在的) value, benefiting entire cmmunities r cultures. Fr example, when Kendrick Lamar launched his album and frequently used the F-slur in ne f his sngs, there was much-heated discussin. He was entirely mistaken in using the F-slur, but as an artist, he still had a wide-reaching impact n sciety. Similarly, ne can respect the late Michael Jacksn because f hw he impacted pp music and the presence f black musicians in mainstream media despite his persnal weaknesses, pinins, wrldviews and assciatins.
While these artists may engage in their terrible behavir, the art they prduce tday may serve as an example fr thers t prduce utstanding wrk in the future. Sme wuld refer t this prcess as a cycle. Gd art shuld, therefre, be judged due t its value and nt the value f the artist.
35.Which wuld Kevin Hart prbably agree with?
      A. Peple shuld perfrm perfectly all the time.
      B. Artists’ shrtcmings might be their inspiratin.
      C. If artists have weaknesses, we’d better cancel them.
      D. Artists shuld be evaluated based n their humanity.
36.Why will “cancel culture” lead t the death f art?
      A. Artists will be unwilling t create any artwrk.
      B. Artists will stp cncerning themselves with cntemprary issues.
      C. Artists will lse their desire fr expressin and creativity.
      D. Artwrks are unavidably inspired by artists’ experiences.
37.Hw can an artist with mistakes benefit thers?
      A. The artist may make sme new wrds ppular.
      B. The artist’s pinins may spark heated discussin.
      C. The artist will benefit entire cmmunities r cultures.
      D. The artist’s wrk may give thers ideas fr artistic creatin.
38.Which wuld be the best title f the passage?
      A. Judge Art Due t Its Value
      B. Separate the Art Frm the Artist
      C. Regard Artists as Human Beings
      D. Stp Criticizing Artists’ Behavir
