There Are N Rules fr Success
“It’s the Wrst Time t Be a Cllege Graduate in Years,” reads a Newsweek headline. Fr 22- t 30-year-ld cmputer-science graduates, emplyment has been falling. Why? Is it ChatGPT? Late in the ecnmic cycle? N matter, the unwritten scial cntract fr success that 1 (impress) upn yu—gd grades, jb lyalty, retirement accunt—feels cmpletely brken. It may be time t create yur wn jb.
Careers 2 were nce safe are nw risky: marketers, sme prgrammers, maybe even lawyers. At the same time, surfing the waves f prgress t 3 the wrld is headed is less risky than yu think.
Prgress cmes thrugh surprises, nt rules, with inventins n ne 4 (think) pssible. The telescpe pened the skies. Gene (基因) editing was hard until Crispr technlgy simplified it. And it’s been less than three years 5
ChatGPT shcked the wrld with what it culd d. Machine learning was researched fr decades with little result, until
back-prpagatin allwed vice and facial recgnitin. 6 f these were invented by fllwing the rules, but by clring utside the lines. Ignre thse wh tell yu t take “ 7 (calculate) risks.” It’s the greatness f risk that prvides the ptential reward.
D yu need universities? It is nted that cllege graduates have the same jbless rate as thse wh didn’t get a cllege degree. S why g? Since 2011, the Thiel Fellwship has paid smart yung peple $200,000 ver tw years
8 (build) new things instead f sitting in a classrm. I asked Peter Thiel hw it was ging. He pinted t mre than 300 fellws wh have created $750 billin 9 value.
N ne knws what’s next. The best way t predict the future is t invent it. Yu’ll make mistakes. Yu might even fail. S what? If yur brain still functins, yu can keep 10 (g) until yu find success that surprises the wrld. There are n rules. D yur thing. Accmplish smething.

I Killed Clr n My Phne
A few mnths ag, I began t be wrried that I was devting t many hurs t nline vides. S, when I read an article abut the 11 f switching ne’s phne t a black-and-white clr mde, I figured I’d give it a try.
The result was shcking. The mment I switched, I n lnger felt a(n) 12 need t lk at my phne. The number f hurs I spent per day n the phne drpped 40 percent, t fur hurs and 40 minutes per day — still embarrassingly high, but nt the dizzying eight-plus hurs I was 13 .
There are sme small 14 t my black-and-white nline life. Because the answer and decline buttns n my phne are bth gray, I’ll smetimes hang up n a call I want t answer. Frtunately, these days, nbdy minds if yu just call them back. Besides, games weren’t as fun, s I started playing them n my pad and discvered that I liked the separatin between wrk and play that it 15 : phne fr bring stuff; pad fr fun. And I’ve fund that whenever I return t clr, even 16 , I am desperate t turn it ff again as quickly as pssible. With my eyes n lnger used t the brightness, I nw find the phne’s clrs t be t vivid, t 17 .
Tw and a half mnths int this jurney, my phne usage remains abut fur hurs per day. And I’m pretty sure I’ll never g back t clr n my phne. I feel like turning ff clr n my phne made me mre aware and mre 18
f the clr and beauty in real life. Nw that I am n lnger turning t my phne fr fun, I find myself 19 it ut in ther ways — reading mre bks, watching mre mvies, planning mre gatherings with friends, hanging ut with my kids. And thse are things I d want t be 20 t.
      Reading Cmprehensin Sectin A
Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passages there are fur wrds r phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the wrd r phrase that best fits the cntext.
Lawbreakers increasingly use generative AI t mimic (模仿) real peple’s vices and cheat their lved nes ut f mney. And there’s a simple slutin t this 21 prblem: a cde wrd.
If yu receive a call frm smene wh sunds just like yur grandsn and says he needs mney, the best thing t d is hang up and call yur grandsn. But if the vice is s 22 that yu can’t bear t d that, ask fr yur family cde wrd. If the caller can’t prduce it, hang up. 23 , if yu are in truble and need t call a lved ne fr help, say the cde wrd s yur relative knws it’s really yu.
Here are sme tips n hw t create and 24 a family cde wrd:
Keep it simple but 25 . The cde wrd (r phrase) shuld be easy t remember and smething nly family members wuld knw. Lawbreakers can find ut a lt abut yu nline, including n scial media and 26 available databases. Dn’t use a wrd they culd 27 , such as the name f yur street r pet. Instead, chse frm entertaining family 28 , like an inside jke r yur baby’s first wrd.
Keep it safe. If yu wrry yu’ll frget the cde wrd, yu culd stre it in a passwrd manager. If yu write it dwn,
      29 the paper.
Keep the circle 30 . Only share the cde wrd with clse and trusted family members, and d it in persn r ver the phne. The wider the circle, the riskier it gets.
Have a Plan B. Sme families prefer t have a cde questin t which nly a family member wuld knw the answer. In the event that a caller culd guess the right answer, have a(n) 31 questin as well—a type f tw-factr cnfirmatin.
Dn’t change the cde wrd unless yu need t. A 32 in family dynamics—such as a relative getting brken up with a mate wh knew the cde—culd justify a change. But if yu’re cnfident there’s n 33 in the circle f cde-wrd hlders, there’s n need t change it. Intrducing a new wrd culd cause 34 , like frgetting which is the latest versin.
The warning: There are situatins where a cde might nt be apprpriate. Sme peple might nt be able t remember the wrd r think t ask fr ne. In that case, it’s prbably best t 35 calls by blcking unknwn numbers.

      (A)
Late last spring I went thrugh a perid f sme persnal trubles and felt I was in need f spiritual assistance. I nce heard that reading a sea-themed cartns and lifting weights wuld cure yu, but I had already tried bth, and they did nt. What I wanted was a bk that culd ffer me advice abut hw t live the rest f my life frever meaningfully. I remembered then, that Baruch Spinza was ften cnsidered amng the few philsphers whse wrk ffered genuine cmfrt. I had lng wanted t read “The Ethics,” Spinza’s masterwrk, and thught it was finally time t be calmed by him.
The prblem was that I knew this wuld be hard t achieve — the bk has a reputatin fr being puzzling. S, I psted n my scial media asking friends if they wuld like t jin me in reading the bk tgether. T my surprise, nearly 40 peple respnded. I drafted a prgram that lasted 10 weeks, and we were ff. Nearly half the peple drpped ut after the first few meetings, but the rest remained cmmitted: We met every Sunday nline, ften entering ur meetings puzzled by Spinza’s declaratins.
After an hur f discussin, we’d leave with a little mre clarity. By the time we reached the final chapter f the bk, ur team was very excited. Unin with ther peple, neness with the universe, an acceptance f the paths ur lives had taken — these were things that we pssessed all alng. I had been saved, thankfully.
Why are we ding this t urselves? Nne f us are academic philsphers. We have busy jbs and ther pressing adult respnsibilities. But the prcess has prved fruitful. Friendship emerges when a grup dedicates itself t a task that requires great effrt. Learning is bth painful and pleasant — and abve all, shared.
I like easy things t. But slwly, I’ve nticed hw mdern life cntinuusly frces us t accept far t many quick and simple easiness. And reading a difficult bk is nt ging t change that, r anything. Still, fr at least a few hurs a week, I have a chance t dedicate myself, amng friends, tward material that requires sincere mental devtin, and I feel the satisfying kind f exhaustin.

      (C)
Since Francis Galtn cined the phrase “nature vs nurture (环境因素)” 150 years ag, the debate abut what makes us wh we are has dminated the human sciences.
Tday, hwever, a new scientific field is set t reshape the debate — nt by declaring victry fr ne side r the ther, nr even by calling a tie, but rather by revealing they were never in ppsitin in the first place. Thrugh this new perspective, nature and nurture are nt even entirely distinguishable, because genes and envirnment dn’t perate in islatin; they influence each ther and t a very real degree even create each ther.
The new field is called scigenmics, an integratin f behaviral science and genetics. Despite being a relatively new area f study, it has the ptential t rewrite a great deal f what we think we knw abut wh we are and hw we gt that way.
Genes dn’t affect wh we becme just n their wn, inside ur bdies — they wrk, in part, by shaping the envirnments we lk fr r prduce. At ther times, the nature-nurture feedback circle may be mre pernicius. It’s n surprise that terrible setbacks — the lss f a jb, the end f a marriage — can cause peple t fall int depressin. I was astnished t learn, hwever, that peple with a high genetic tendency fr depressin are mre likely t encunter these setbacks, which in turn cntribute t their depressin. That’s nt t say that any f it is their fault, just that the way we’re supprted and the wrld we pilt are clsely linked.
Here is the part f this research that really blws me away. The research suggests that yur partner’s genes influence yur likelihd f depressin almst a third as much as yur wn genes d. It als shws when a small number f students with a genetic tendency t smke are present in a high schl, smking rates can rise rapidly acrss an entire grade — even amng thse students wh didn’t persnally knw thse classmates.
Genes alne aren’t enugh t determine these utcmes and neither is envirnment. Nature and nurture bth shape each ther, with nature influencing the way we experience nurture and nurture influencing the way ur nature expresses itself. The mre pprtunities and infrmatin the envirnment prvides — the mre varied envirnments becme — the greater the influence that genetic variatin has in srting us int different categries.
Nature and nurture aren’t separate frces — they’re endlessly circling back n each ther.
Prir t the emergence f scigenmics, it was widely believed that .
      genes and envirnment functined separately
there was n clear line between nature and nurture
envirnment shaped ur perceptin f wh we are
nature mattered mre than nurture fr persnal grwth
The underlined wrd “pernicius” (paragraph 4) is clsest in meaning t “”.
      A. disastrusB. generativeC. pintlessD. questinable
It can be inferred that the research shcked the writer by suggesting that .
ur genes may change because f the peple we live with
nature determines ur behaviur just as much as nurture des
peple with the same genes are mre likely t interact with each ther
the genes f peple arund us can affect the envirnment we experience
Which f the fllwing pictures crrectly illustrates hw nature and nurture make us wh we are?
      ABCD
      Sectin C
Their grups mix family grups with settlers frm ther grups.
In ther wrds, strng relatinships are ften built frm prviding help.
Scientists have lng knwn that scial animals usually put bld relatives first.
But t their surprise, they fund that starlings als helped nn-relatives, including when they might have helped family instead.
The behavir f superb starlings als suggests that sustaining these srts f relatinships with unrelated fellws benefits everybdy.
It has recrded thusands f interactins between hundreds f the birds and cllected DNA t examine their
      bilgical relatinships.
Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Fill in each blank with a prper sentence given in the bx. Each sentence can be used nly nce. Nte that there are tw mre sentences than yu need.
These Beautiful Birds Frm Smething Like Lasting Friendships
True friends, mst peple wuld agree, are there fr each ther. Smetimes it means helping each ther mve. Smetimes that means ffering emtinal supprt. And if yu’re a superb starling, it means stuffing small insects dwn the thrats f yur friends’ children, secure in the expectatin that they will eventually d the same fr yurs.
Superb starlings are distinguishing amng animals that breed (繁殖) cperatively. 47 New parents rely n
up t 16 helpers, which bring chicks extra fd and help run ff killers.
Dr. Rubenstein’s lab has maintained a 20-year field study f the species that included 40 breeding seasns.
48 When Dr. Earl, then a graduate student in the lab, began analyzing the data, she and her team were nt shcked t see that birds largely helped relatives, the way an aunt r uncle may temprarily cme t babysit and give parents a break.
49 Birds new t the grup helped thse brn within it, and the ppsite was als true. And because superb starlings ften switch between breeding and helping rles, the team fund that individual birds that helped nn-relatives ne breeding seasn later had their gd deeds repaid, smetimes repeatedly. “The starlings are cnsistently investing in the same preferred scial partners ver their lives,” Dr. Earl said. “T me, that sunds like friendship.”
And tday, as many experts wrry abut a widespread f human lneliness, there culd be value in learning lessns frm the superb starling. 50
But maybe dn’t ffer t stuff small insects dwn the muths f yur friends’ kids. Luckily, yu can always ffer t babysit.
      Summary Writing
Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Summarize the main idea and the main pint(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
The Battle t Keep Cnsumers Means Smaller Packs f Ckies and Chips
Snack and drink in very small sizes are hitting stre shelves as brands try t keep stretched cnsumers buying with lwer-price ptins. PepsiC nw sells Lay’s ptat chips in half a dzen different-sized bags, csting frm arund 50 cents t rughly $5. And Mndelez Internatinal has six different Milka chclate bar sizes with prices frm under $1 t
      $6.
Fd, drink and cnsumer-prduct cmpanies are hping that a wider range f shrunken size ptins can bst verall sales vlumes, which have been pressured in recent quarters. Smaller-size fferings als tend t have higher prfit margins (利润率).
“Cnsumers are ging int small pack sizes t make the best use f their budget,” said Mndelez Finance Chief
Luca Zaramella. “The $3, $4 as ppsed t the $6, $7, particularly in snacks, are becming a clear center f gravity.” Cnsumer-gds cmpanies have lng tailred packaging fr ckies, chips and ther items t a range f factrs:
n-the-g r lunch snacking, prtin cntrl, affrdability. The last ne, hwever, critical in emerging markets fr years, has recently becme mre imprtant in the U.S.
Still, ffering mre package sizes may create sme prblems. In sme cases, cnsumers clearly see they are getting less—fewer ptat chips, ckies, fr instance—but nt a crrespndingly lwer price, an apprach knwn as shrinkflatin that has annyed shppers in recent years.
Anther difficulty is that just as sme brands expand their prduct listings, retailers (零售商) are wrking t reduce
the number f prducts n their shelves—intensifying the already harsh cmpetitin fr shelf space. Cmpanies want the single-serve ptin t attract cnsumers, but they als want the multipack and several ptins t drive vlumes, said Bnnie Herzg, a senir analyst at Gldman Sachs. “But there’s nly s much space fr sme f these categries,” she said. “And it’s harder t cme by.”

Fd cmpanies are intrducing smaller package sizes t attract budget-cnscius cnsumers and bst sales, since these prducts ften bring higher prfit margins. Hwever, the strategy has drawbacks. Shppers may hate shrinkflatin when they receive less fr similar prices, and retailers’ limited shelf space makes it harder fr brands t ffer multiple package ptins.
