Imagine being a tiny baby snail (蜗牛), just flating arund the vast cean fr mnths until yu find a suitable place t grw int an adult. This is the life f Kellet’s whelks. Histrically, these sea snails lived nly in the warm waters f Suthern Califrnia and Mexic. Hwever, in recent years, sme have mved 300 kilmeters nrth, t much clder waters, and scientists wanted t find ut if they had truly adapted t the clder nrthern envirnment.
T investigate this, researchers cllected Kellet’s whelks frm bth suthern and nrthern parts f the Pacific Cast f Califrnia. They brught all the snails t a special tank and kept them in cntrlled cnditins. The adult snails were allwed t have babies. Scientists then studied the babies’ DNA because they had spent their entire lives in the same envirnment, making sure any bserved differences were due t their genes, nt their life experiences.
The study revealed significant genetic differences between the nrthern and suthern snails. A large number f genes (2,770) were wrking differently in the nrthern snails, with 64% f these genes being mre active. These distinct gene patterns allwed researchers t accurately tell if a baby snail’s parents were frm the nrth r suth just by lking at its DNA. These results strngly suggest that the nrthern snails have adapted t their new, clder habitat. This adaptatin invlved mutatins — if their genes hadn’t changed, the researchers wuldn’t have been able t tell the snails apart.
But why did these whelks mve nrth and hw did they adapt? Changing cean currents carried sme baby snails nrthward, and ccasinal warmer water bursts made it easier fr them t survive there initially. Over time, snails that already had slight DNA differences helping them handle clder temperatures were mre likely t survive and multiply. This research can help us understand hw ther cean animals might respnd t a changing climate and supprt sustainable fishing practices fr species like Kellet’s whelks.

A. T recrd their life experience.B. T make different bservatins.
C. T rule ut envirnmental factrs.D. T cntrl their living cnditins.
34. What des the underlined wrd “mutatins” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Changes in the DNA.B. Differences in the frm.
