Sent thrugh the washing. Eaten by insects. Bitten by a dg. These are just sme f the ways that bks can be damaged, as seen n a recent afternn at the Weissman Preservatin Center.
Students in “Texts in Transitin,” a GenEd class taught by Prfessrs Ann Blair and Leah Whittingtn, were visiting the Weissman Preservatin Center t witness preservatin firsthand. Their curse explres hw written wrks are passed dwn thrugh time.
Cnservatrs play a vital rle in this prcess. Their wrk — repairing trn manuscripts (手稿), reducing insect damage, and s n — ensures the survival f texts frm the ancient t the present. At the Weissman Preservatin Center, students learn what happens behind the scenes when cnservatrs step in t keep materials usable and preserve them fr the future. “Harvard Library nt nly has remarkable materials gathered ver generatins but als expert staff wh allw students t experience these treasures up clse and frm new views,” said Blair, a prfessr in the Histry Department.
As students handled the papers, ink and paints befre them, they studied the evidence manuscripts ffer researchers and the cmplexities f preservatin. “What happens when the riginal material is n lnger available?” ne student asked. “Any treatment we apply must nt harm the bject and can be restred,” explained Eliza, Senir Paper Cnservatr. “We always respect the integrity f the materials and nly make changes that can be reversed, which is imprtant in ur cnservatin standards.”
The class cncluded with a clse-lking exercise. Using angle lights and pcket micrscpes, students examined manuscripts n the table, amazed at iridescent (泛着虹彩的) inks f the pages. One student, enthusiastic abut her discveries, set up her phne t phtgraph the scene. Turning t senir rare bk cnservatr Jdy Beenk, she declared, “I think I have fund my career.”

On a recent trip thrugh the Himalayas, my bruises (淤伤) became the truest suvenirs. Mre persnal than anything bught, they carry a unique memry. Over time, my desire fr typical suvenirs has faded; I nw value experiences ver bjects. But maybe that’s just me. Tw ut f three Americans bring back a suvenir frm their travels, with US sales tpping $21bn in 2022.
Humans have lng cllected bjects t remember experiences. With the rise f industrializatin and turism, suvenirs became mre cmmn. Suvenirs bring back happy memries, serving as a simple way t say, “I was there.” “At the heart f ur actins is a desire t feel heard, seen and cnnected,” explains Madarkal, a prfessr in India.
Travellers tday are mre aware f their impact n lcal cmmunity, but the prblems caused by travel suvenirs are ften verlked. In a 2022 Australian reprt, up t 75% f suvenirs marketed as “lcal” are made verseas. Real gds are expensive due t time-cnsuming labur invlved, s sme shps sell cheap fakes (假货) with mst custmers giving little regard t their rigins. While buying fakes may seem t supprt lcal sellers, it ften minimizes the prfit f the traditinal handicrafts, creating a negative cycle.
S, hw can yu buy meaningful suvenirs? “Be curius... it’s nt just abut buying r chsing carefully, it’s abut rejecting and explaining why,” said Madarkal. Asking where an item cmes frm and hw it is made is a gd first step. Chsing unique designs ver mass-prduced gds at fair-trade markets helps supprt lcal cmmunities. Intentins als matter, as suvenirs shuld be chsen fr persnal meaning rather than habit. And suvenirs dn’t always have t be bjects — jurnals r skills gained can becme lasting reminders.
Ultimately, there’s n universal rule fr a “meaningful” suvenir. But next time yu’re grabbing a quick airprt suvenir, pause and reflect.
      28. What changed the authr’s view n suvenirs?
      A. A search fr adventures.B. A desire fr experiences.
      C. Fear f physical injuries. D. Changes in life stages.
      29. What is paragraph 2 mainly abut?

Newly published research finds that trpical frests can recver up t twice as fast after defrestatin with sufficient sil nitrgen (氮). Scientists frm the University f Leeds launched the largest and lngest experiment ever designed t examine hw nutrients shape frest regrwth in trpical areas cleared fr agriculture.
They selected 76 frest plts acrss Central America and mnitred them fr up t 20 years. Each site differed in age and size, allwing the team t track tree grwth and death during frest recvery. Different nutrient treatments were applied t test nutrient rles. Sme gt nitrgen fertilizer, sme phsphrus (磷), sme bth, and thers nne. This allwed direct cmparisn f frest respnses t different sil cnditins.
The results shwed that sil nutrients strngly influence trpical frest regrwth speed: nitrgen-rich frests recvered twice as fast as nitrgen-lacking nes in the first 10 recvery years, while phsphrus alne had n such effect. The findings were published n January 13 in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins. Lead authr Wenguang Tang said, “Our study is inspiring because it suggests there are ways we can bst the strage f greenhuse gases thrugh refrestatin by managing the nutrients available t trees.”
Althugh nitrgen fertilizer was used in the experiment, the researchers d nt recmmend fertilizing frests. Widespread fertilizer use culd lead t harmful side effects including plluting rivers and lakes and making the sil t weak fr trees t stay healthy. Instead, the team suggests practical alternatives. Frest managers culd plant trees frm the bean family, which naturally add nitrgen t the sil. Anther ptin is restring frests in areas that already have sufficient nitrgen due t the effects f air pllutin.
Trpical frests slw climate change by absrbing carbn dixide and string it in trees. If yung trpical frests wrldwide lack nitrgen, they may fail t stre abut 0.69 billin tnnes f CO2 each year — rughly equal t tw years f carbn dixide and ther greenhuse gas release in the U.K.
      32. What is the Leeds experiment targeted at?
      A. Recvery speed f trpical frests.B. Rle f nutrients in frest regrwth.
      C. Restratin f frests in cleared areas.D. Envirnmental impact f defrestatin.
      33. What did the experiment find abut frest regrwth?
      A. Nitrgen bsts recvery speed.B. Cmbined nutrients wrk better.
      C. Trpical-frests recver naturally.D. Phsphrus aids regrwth indirectly.
      34. What can be inferred frm the researchers’ recmmendatin?
      A. CO2 release shuld be mnitred.B. Bean family trees shuld be cut dwn.
      C. Nitrgen fertilizer shuld be used widely.D. We shuld turn t nature-based slutins.
      35. What is the best title f the text?
      A. Nitrgen: Impact n Climate Change
      B. Trpical Frests: Glbal Carbn Sinks
      C. Trpical Frests: Grwth with Phsphrus
      D. Nitrgen: The Secret Driving Frest Regrwth
