Sme scientists insist that nce we discver the truth abut the wrld, we are dne. Anyne wh denies
such truths, they suggest, is stupid r ignrant. Well, n.
In science, what we d is bth hard and, ften, hard t explain. The histry f science ffers many
examples f matters that scientists thught they had reslved, nly t discver that these matters needed t
be recnsidered. Familiar examples include Earth as the center f the universe and the stability f cntinents.
Science is a prcess f learning and discvery, and smetimes we learn that what we thught was right
is wrng. T say that science is “true” r “permanent” is like saying that “beauty is abslute”. At best, it’s a
bit ff - key. The cncept f beauty tday is very different frm what it was in ancient Greece r the Middle
Ages, and s are mst f ur “laws” f nature.
Other scientists may say scientific findings are true because they use “the scientific methd”. But we
can never actually agree n what that methd is. Sme will say it is bservatin and descriptin f the wrld.
Others will say it is the use f experience and experiment. Recently a leading scientist said the scientific
methd was t avid fling neself int thinking smething is true that is nt.
Each f these views has its value, but if the claim is that any ne f these is the scientific methd, then
they all fail. Histry and philsphy have shwn that the idea f a singular scientific methd is unscientific.
In fact, the methds f science have varied between disciplines and acrss time. Scientists have bitterly
argued abut which methds are the best, and, as we all knw, bitter arguments rarely get reslved.
In my view, science is nt simple, and neither is the natural wrld. Our effrts t understand and
explain the natural wrld are just that: effrts.
Because we’re human, we ften fall flat. The gd news is that when that happens, we pick urselves
up, brush urselves ff, and get back t wrk. Understanding the wrld we live in, and using that knwledge
t d useful things, is its wn reward.
      24. Accrding t paragraph 1, what is cnsidered as truth in science ___.
      A. may have lasting value B. may need re–examining
      C. shuld be knwn t all D. shuld nt be rejected
      25. Why des the authr mentin “beauty” in paragraph 3?
      A. T raise a questin. B. T make a predictin.
      C. T illustrate an idea. D. T prpse a slutin.
      26. What des the authr think f the methds f science?
      A. They shuldn’t be used t fl the public.
      B. They rely heavily n bservatin and descriptin.
      C. They seldm cause arguments amng scientists.
      D. They shuldn’t be limited t a single methd.
      27. What culd be the best title fr the passage?
      高二英语试题 第 4 页 共10页
      A. Effrts in Science: Dreaming Big B. Science: Endless Jurney t Truth
      C. Scientists: Defenders f Science D. Scientific Methd: Simple Chice
      C
In the deepest and cldest parts f the cean, sea creatures—mainly animals withut backbnes—can
grw t sizes that dwarf (使 显 得 矮 小 ) related species arund the wrld. The phenmenn is called
gigantism (巨大畸形). But what is it abut deep cean waters that causes it?
In the deepest parts f the cean, resurces are severely limited. Much f the fd riginates in
shallwer waters and nly a small part f that ges dwn t the sea depths. When fd is nt enugh, being
bigger prvides a huge advantage, accrding t Alicia Bitnd, an expert wh studies deep-sea species.
“Larger animals can mve faster and farther t find fd. They have mre efficient metablism (新陈代谢)
and are better at string fd. S when smething gets dwn t deeper waters, big animals can cnsume
mre and stre that energy fr a lnger time,” Bitnd said.
The cld temperature in the deep sea can als fuel gigantism by significantly slwing dwn animals’
metablism. Near Antarctica, gigantism happens clser t the surface. In these plar waters, the xygen
cncentratin is high, but animals in these envirnments use xygen very slwly because cld water
temperatures reduce their metablic rates, ecphysilgist Art Wds explained. Because the rich xygen
supply is far mre than the animal’s xygen demand, it’s pssible that grwth restrictins are lifted.
But even fr plar giants, there seems t be a limit t hw big they can grw. In a study, Wds and
his teammates studied giant arctic sea spiders (蜘蛛), which can grw t be 30.5 centimeters lng. The team
fund that larger sea spiders had lwer xygen levels in their bdies. Aerbic (有氧的) metablism depends
n xygen levels in the bdy, and if it gets t lw, tissues will suffer frm a lack f xygen. The declining
xygen level in large sea spiders suggests that smething is shifting in the balance f xygen supply and
demand, the researchers reprted in the study.
While there are several theries abut the different factrs that can prduce cean giants, n ne is
certain abut the precise mechanisms (机制) that drive dramatic evlutinary changes in bdy size. “We
wuld say in bilgy that nthing is ever certain,” Wds said.
      28. Hw d bigger animals benefit frm their sizes in the deep cean accrding t Alicia Bitnd?
      A. They can adapt t darkness in the sea.
      B. They can stre energy fr a lnger time.
      C. They can hunt fr fd in shallw waters easily.
      D. They can experience reduced resistance when swimming.
      29. Hw des the cld temperature influence sea creatures near Antarctica?
      A. It leads t slw grwth.
      B. It speeds up their metablic rates.
      C. It makes gigantism a rare ccurrence.
      D. It slws dwn their xygen cnsumptin.
      30. What did the researchers find ut abut giant arctic sea spiders?
      A. Their size is influenced by the xygen level in their bdy.
      B. They have a higher xygen demand than nrmal spiders.
      C. The xygen levels in large sea spiders decline annually.
      高二英语试题 第 5 页 共10页
      D. Their survival mainly depends n their xygen levels.
      31. What is the text mainly abut?
      A. The effects f cld temperatures n deep-sea gigantism.
      B. The limitatins and ptential risks f gigantism in plar waters.
      C. The uncertain mechanisms behind evlutinary changes in bdy size.
      D. The prbable factrs cntributing t the large size f deep-sea creatures.
      D
Have yu ever had t shut t call yur family t the dinner table? It turns ut that humans aren’t the
nly creatures that need t find creative ways t tell their lved nes abut a meal n the table.
Prfessr Benjamin Taylr at LaGuardia Cmmunity Cllege fund wasps (黄蜂) have their wn ways
f cmmunicating with each ther abut mealtime. Prfessr Taylr and his team studied a behavir
exhibited by wasps called gastral drumming (腹部鼓动). When wrkers prduce the behavir, they drum
their gaster against different parts f the nest, prducing distinct sunds.
“Fr nearly five decades, researchers thught gastral drumming was a signal f hunger. My team and I
shwed that wasps are actually infrming each ther thrugh this behavir that there’s gd fd nearby,”
said Prfessr Taylr. “Our findings are really exciting because they prvide the first evidence that wasps
have cmplex fd cmmunicatin, just like ants, bees, and ther scial insects.”
The study fcuses n a species f wasps called the German yellw jacket. “These wasps ften shw up
at picnics and ball games—anywhere fd can be fund. German yellw jackets are ntrius (臭名昭著的)
fr aggressively defending their nests,” said Prfessr Taylr. “Anyne wh has stepped n ne wn’t sn
frget it. Hwever, when they sting (蜇 ), it’s mst ften t defend themselves r ther members f the
      grup.”
German yellw jacket wasps are vital parts f ecsystems and are main pllinatrs (传粉者) fr plants.
Many wasp researchers have been trying t get thers t reassess their imprtance in this regard. There’s
als a hashtag (话题标签) used n scial media t try t get peple t understand their imprtance.
Prfessr Taylr and his team are currently testing additinal theries abut the functin f gastral
drumming. Because f the significant variatin in hw the wasps prduce the behavir, they’re examining
whether this variatin means the quality f the fd in additin t the fact that there’s fd available.
“There’s a lt that we can learn frm scial insects. Fr ne, they’re knwn fr being incredibly
efficient, s much s that shipping cmpanies use mdels which have been inspired by ants t try and ship
their gds as efficiently as they pssibly can. S, if yur package arrives faster, yu prbably have a scial
insect t thank fr that,” said Prfessr Taylr.
      32. What is the functin f wasps’ gastral drumming?
      A. T relieve hunger. B. T pllinate plants.
      C. T defend their nests. D. T infrm ther members f fd.
      33. Why is the hashtag used n scial media?
      A. T raise awareness f wasps’ imprtance t the ecsystem.
      B. T crrect wasps’ bad reputatin fr harmful stings.
      C. T share pictures f wasps in their natural habitats.
      高二英语试题 第 6 页 共10页
      D. T encurage researchers t study wasps.

      C. Different meanings f their gastral drumming sunds.
      D. The ways that they help with the pllinatin f plants.
      35. What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut?
      A. The highly efficient wrk f scial insects.

Mr. and Mrs. Brwn mved int the apartment next dr in early July. Initially, we exchanged plite
smiles when passing by, but smehw things changed sn. Lucas, my yunger sn, was crazy abut
playing the drums (鼓). He’d been dreaming f jining the schl’s music band and practiced with all his
might every evening, usually frm 5 pm t 6 pm. He said the lud beats helped him release stress frm a
day f studying. Hwever, ur thin apartment walls turned his practice sessins int a headache fr the
      Brwns.
Mrs. Brwn wrked night shifts at the hspital. She relied n the afternns t sleep and recharge fr
the next shift, but the drumbeats wuld wake her up repeatedly. Mr. Brwn, a freelance writer wh wrked
frm hme, needed cmplete quiet t fcus n his stries, but the cnstant “bm-bm-bm” wuld
break his train f thught. We didn’t ntice their truble at first; Lucas always clsed his bedrm dr
when practicing, and we thught that wuld reduce the nise t the minimum level.
One Thursday evening, Mr. Brwn kncked n ur dr. His face lked serius, and I culd tell he

aplgized immediately, but Lucas felt wrnged. He argued that he nly practiced fr an hur each day and
had nwhere else t play. Fr the next few days, the atmsphere between the tw families became awkward.
We ceased greeting each ther, and the walls seemed t grw thicker.
      I decided t fix the situatin. I baked a plate f chclate ckies—Mrs. Brwn’s favrite, which I
learned frm a casual chat befre. Lucas ffered t take them t the Brwns. I gave him a thumbs-up and
