Grwing up in Ghana, Kfi was fascinated by Chinese mvies like Jurney t the West, which sparked his
curisity abut Chinese language and culture. Determined t understand mre, he enrlled in a Chinese studies
prgram at a tp university in Ghana in 2017.
The beginning was challenging. The unfamiliar characters, tnes, and grammar made him cnsider quitting after
his very first lessn. Frtunately, his Chinese teacher ffered cnsistent encuragement and even invited him t
spend a vacatin fully engaged in language practice. It was then that he received his Chinese name, Wang
Chenggng, meaning “King f Success”.
T deepen his cultural understanding, Kfi vlunteered at the Cnfucius Institute, where he learned calligraphy,
paper-cutting, and dragn dance. His effrts were recgnized with several awards. In 2019, he was elected
president f his university’s Chinese Students Assciatin and later wn the natinal Chinese Bridge cmpetitin,
which earned him a schlarship t study in China. Althugh the pandemic delayed his plans, he persisted, wrking
as a teaching assistant and vlunteer Chinese teacher in Ghana.
Finally, in September 2023, Kfi arrived in China. Beynd the language and culture he had lng studied, he
experienced firsthand the realities f Chinese-style mdernizatin: efficient high-speed railways, mbile payment
systems, and AI-enabled services. What struck him mst was the sense f safety — leaving his laptp in the
library r frgetting his diary n the subway never led t lss, thanks t the hnest and systemic scial rder.
Reflecting n his jurney, Kfi ften says, “W de ren sheng yin zhng wen er mei li” — “My life is beautiful
because f Chinese.” Frm mvie-inspired curisity t life-changing crss-cultural immersin, his stry illustrates
hw passin and perseverance can bridge cntinents and create new beginnings.
24. What initially mtivated Kfi t learn Chinese?
A. A schlarship t study in China.
B. Encuragement frm his family.
C. Awards frm the Cnfucius Institute.
D. Chinese mvies he watched in childhd.
25. What des Kfi’s experience in paragraph 2 mainly shw?

Have yu ever been in mid-cnversatin with smene, when yu lk ver and find them standing in exactly
the same pse as yu, r hlding the same facial expressin? It may seem like they have cnsciusly cpied yu,
but it is mre likely that this is the chamelen (变色龙) effect at play. The chamelen effect is the nn-cnscius
mirrr f anther persn’s gestures r mannerisms.
The chamelen effect was demnstrated in an experiment by psychlgists Jhn Bargh and Tanya Chartrand.
The first part included 78 peple, each speaking with an experimenter fr 10 minutes. Bargh and Chartrand studied
whether participants wuld mimic (模仿) the actins f smene they hadn’t met befre — such as tuching the
face and mving a ft. When these gestures were perfrmed by the experimenter, participants increased face
tuching by 20% and ft mvement by 50%. The mimicry was uncnscius. The secnd part invlved half f the
participants being mimicked by an experimenter. The results shwed that thse wh were mimicked rated the
experimenter mre favrably.
Why d we d it? T understand the empathetic thery, think abut hw yu wuld respnd if yur clse friend
tells yu he has just passed an exam. If yur friend tells yu in an excited manner, chances are yu respnd in a
similar tne. Anther thery is an adapted survival trait. Being able t fit in with thse arund yu may have helped
when under threat. In mdern life, the brain may react similarly when mving abrad r int a new grup.
In sme instances, the chamelen effect targets speech. If yu spend enugh time talking t smene using a
particular phrase, yu may unintentinally use it in yur wn speech. In a French interview, Je Bantn, an English
ftball player displayed French prnunciatins instead f his native Scuse accent. He later explained that he was
unaware f this change at the time.
第 6页/共 13页
The main reasns behind scial mimicry are psitive. Hwever, t much f the chamelen effect can be
damaging. Sme peple carry this trait t the extreme, causing them t cmpletely change in different scial
settings. These peple can lse their sense f self. One study fund that mst peple felt they had t suppress (抑制)
sme aspect f their persnality at wrk t appear prfessinal.
28. What is the chamelen effect accrding t the text?
A. Cpying thers’ behavirs uncnsciusly.
B. Changing clr t match the envirnment.
C. Revealing the true inner feelings purpsely.
D. Hlding the same facial expressin as thers.
29. Hw did the participants being mimicked respnd in the experiment?
A. They became mre self-aware. B. They lst interest in the cnversatin.
C. They rated the experimenter higher. D. They tried t mimic the experimenter.
30. Why des the authr use the example f a friend sharing exam results?
A. T shw the excitement. B. T explain a survival trait.
C. T highlight interpersnal bnds. D. T supprt the idea f empathy.
31. What des the authr imply abut extreme mimics in the last paragraph?
A. They tend t change scial settings.
B. They are mre likely t be prfessinal.
C. They may fail t keep their persnal identity.
D. They may ignre the psitivity f scial mimicry.

A wildfire burns in the hills f a Ls Angeles suburb, mving quickly frm dry brush tward a cluster f
hmes. The landscaping at the first huse catches fire, but the huse itself stubbrnly refuses t burn. Any small
flames that start alng its walls quickly die ut. Surprisingly, there is n water in sight. The flames are being put
ut by sund waves. This type f sund-based fire cntrl may sn play a vital rle in fighting wildfires.
Understanding this requires knwing fire’s nature.
The key ingredients fr a fire are heat, fuel, and xygen. Remve any ne, and the fire stps. Sund waves can
stp a fire by pushing xygen mlecules away frm the fuel, preventing the fire frm getting the air it needs t
cntinue its burning reactin. Geff Bruder, an engineer wh previusly researched energy at NASA, c-funded
Snic Fire Tech (Snic fr shrt) t build a machine fr this purpse.
第 7页/共 13页
He explains that the device vibrates the xygen faster than the fuel can use it, which effectively blcks the
chemical reactin. The cmpany has successfully demnstrated fire cntrl frm distances up t 25 feet away.
Using sund waves t fight fires isn’t a brand-new cncept. US research agencies and universities have studied the
methd fr ver a decade. Hwever, Albert Simeni, a fire prtectin expert, pints ut the real challenge: scaling
up the technlgy withut creating damaging sund effects. Snic slves this challenge by using infrasund (次声).
Unlike previus effrts using 30 — 60 hertz waves, Snic stays at r belw 20 hertz. Therefre, these waves are
inaudible (听不见的) t peple and travel farther than higher-frequency waves.
This technlgy is practical because hmes ften catch fire frm embers entering rf penings. Snic’s
system uses a device pwered by an electric mtr t create sund waves, which travel thrugh metal pipes
installed n the rf and under its edges. The system activates autmatically when sensrs detect a flame, creating a
kind f frce field f infrasund t stp it. Experts nte that sund waves generally wrk best n small flames.
Nevertheless, hmewners and public-service cmpanies are eager t try it. Snic is wrking with tw Califrnia
cmpanies t demnstrate its technlgy, and aims t have 50 pilt installatins by early 2026.
32. Hw did the authr intrduce the tpic in paragraph 1?
A. By describing a scene. B. By listing numbers.
C. By making a cmparisn. D. By intrducing a cncept.
33. What is the key t sund waves putting ut a fire accrding t the text?
A. Remving the burning material physically.
B. Keeping xygen away frm the burning fuel.
C. Reducing the surrunding temperature rapidly.
D. Lwering the temperature f the flames directly.
34. What can be inferred abut Snic Fire Tech’s use f infrasund?
A. It pineers the use f sund t fight fires.
B. It is designed t prduce audible fire alarms.
C. It significantly lwers the cst f firefighting.
D. It fixes a key prblem in earlier sund methds.
35. What is the main idea f the text?
A. The grwing threat f wildfires in the suburbs.
B. An innvative sund technlgy fr firefighting.
C. The science behind putting ut fires with sund.
第 8页/共 13页
D. A cmparisn between sund and water fr fire cntrl.
