On a recent trip thrugh the Himalayas, my bruises (淤伤) became the truest suvenirs. Mre persnal than anything bught, they carry a unique memry. Over time, my desire fr typical suvenirs has faded; I nw value experiences ver bjects. But maybe that’s just me. Tw ut f three Americans bring back a suvenir frm their travels, with US sales tpping $21bn in 2022.
Humans have lng cllected bjects t remember experiences. With the rise f industrializatin and turism, suvenirs became mre cmmn. Suvenirs bring back happy memries, serving as a simple way t say, “I was there.” “At the heart f ur actins is a desire t feel heard, seen and cnnected,” explains Madarkal, a prfessr in India.
Travellers tday are mre aware f their impact n lcal cmmunity, but the prblems caused by travel suvenirs are ften verlked. In a 2022 Australian reprt, up t 75% f suvenirs marketed as “lcal” are made verseas. Real gds are expensive due t time-cnsuming labur invlved, s sme shps sell cheap fakes (假货) with mst custmers giving little regard t their rigins. While buying fakes may seem t supprt lcal sellers, it ften minimizes the prfit f the traditinal handicrafts, creating a negative cycle.
S, hw can yu buy meaningful suvenirs? “Be curius... it’s nt just abut buying r chsing carefully, it’s abut rejecting and explaining why,” said Madarkal. Asking where an item cmes frm and hw it is made is a gd first step. Chsing unique designs ver mass-prduced gds at fair-trade markets helps supprt lcal cmmunities. Intentins als matter, as suvenirs shuld be chsen fr persnal meaning rather than habit. And suvenirs dn’t always have t be bjects — jurnals r skills gained can becme lasting reminders.
Ultimately, there’s n universal rule fr a “meaningful” suvenir. But next time yu’re grabbing a quick airprt suvenir, pause and reflect.
      4. What changed the authr’s view n suvenirs?
      A. A search fr adventures.B. A desire fr experiences.
      C. Fear f physical injuries. D. Changes in life stages.

      A. The increasing ppularity f suvenirs.B. The psychlgical need fr suvenirs.
      C. The imprtance f mdern turism.D. The memries turism brings back.
      6. What is the cnsequence f the negative cycle in paragraph 3?
      A. Turism becmes mre prfitable.B. Lcal sellers gain lng-term benefits.
      C. Traditinal handicrafts lse the market.D. Suvenir design becmes standardized.
      7. What des the authr suggest abut buying meaningful suvenirs?
      A. Picking timeless cmmn designs.B. Fllwing yur wn shpping habits.
      C. Chsing intentin ver cnvenience.D. Weighing pssessin ver remembrance.
      【答案】4. B 5. B 6. C 7. C

Tday rcket launches and space missins are cmmn. But in the early 1900s, space travel seemed like a dream. One f the mst influential peple in the field f rcket science was American Rbert Gddard (1882-1945). The American space agency NASA describes him as “the father f mdern rcket prpulsin (推进)”.
Gddard nce said that “the dream f yesterday is the hpe f tday and the reality f tmrrw”. His scientific wrk gave hpe t many dreams abut space travel. He turned sme f thse dreams int reality.
Over ne hundred years ag, Gddard carried ut studies and tests f rcket engines. He develped and flew many rckets that gt their pwer frm slid fuels: chemicals that frmed a hard substance. In 1925, he made and tested the first rcket engine using a sft chemical fuel. The next year, he successfully launched the wrld’s first liquid-fuel rcket.
Many histrians cnsider liquid-fuel rcket flight t be as imprtant as the first airplane flight by the American brthers Orville and Wilbur Wright. Gddard’s wrk prved that machines culd travel utside f Earth’s atmsphere and int space.
During his early research, he received mney and supprt frm the US Smithsnian Institutin. The Smithsnian published several reprts abut his effrts.
One publicatin in 1919, called A Methd f Reaching Extreme Altitudes, wrte abut his search fr ways t send weather recrding instruments higher than ballns culd fly. It described hw he develped the mathematical theries fr rcket flight. In that reprt, Gddard als suggested the pssibility f a rcket smeday reaching the mn. At the time, there was a big dispute in the press abut this claim. Many peple thught he was flish fr suggesting smething that seemed s impssible.
Many f Gddard’s ideas are still used in rcket develpment. S, in a way, every rcket that flies tday culd be cnsidered a Gddard rcket.
      8. What makes NASA highly praise Gddard?
      A. His varius dreams and effrts.B. His first airplane experiment.
      C. His rcket experiments and research.D. His rcket pwer thery and predictins.
      9. What des the underlined wrd “dispute” in Paragraph 6 mean?

Readers may be familiar with the humrus idea that humans are nly the third-cleverest species n Earth after mice and dlphins. But perhaps Duglas Adams shuld have included dlphins’ cetacean cusins. In a paper just published in Open Mind, CETI researchers describe a strikingly human-like feature in whale cmmunicatin. Sperm whales cmmunicate using a series f clicks researchers call “cdas”, which lk a lt like vwels in human languages.
Fr linguists, vwels are characterized by the free flw f air thrugh a vibrating vcal tract. In cntrast, cnsnants invlve disruptins f the airflw. A vwel’s basic pitch(technically called F0)is determined by the speaker’s sex and bdy size. But by mving tngue and lips we shape the sund int higher-pitched “frmants”(F1, F2, F3, etc.). Whether we hear an “ah” r an “ee” depends n the relatinship between these frmants.
T humans, sperm-whale cdas d nt sund like pitches at all; the clicks are much t infrequent and irregular. The clicks becme a cntinuus tne nly when they ccur 20 t 40 times per secnd. But when the whales’ silences were remved in sftware, the researchers culd cnsider them as pitches nevertheless, and lk mre clsely at their ther qualities.
The next step was taken with the help f artificial intelligence(AI). The researchers used an AI system trained t learn human language t examine the cdas. Gasper Begus, a linguist at the University f Califrnia and the study’s lead authr, says that the AI led them t study the pitch patterns f the clicks — nes that wrk like human vwel sunds.
Sure enugh, the whale cdas cntained tw sund patterns resembling thse in the F1 and F2 frmants f human vwels, but at a much lwer pitch. Based n this resemblance, the researchers called them the a-cda and i-cda vwels. They even fund that whales culd prduce diphthngs — tw vwels gliding quickly frm ne t anther, like the ah-ee sund in English wrds like “ride” and “time”. The whales d all this ften in what researchers call “cnversatins”.
Exactly what the whales may be saying t each ther remains unknwn — althugh wrking that ut is CETI’s eventual gal. That will require a large bdy f vcalizatins t study, as well as an equally big number f bservatins f hw the animals behave and interact with each ther.
      12. Why des the authr refer t Duglas Adams’s jke abut mice, dlphins and humans?
      A. T illustrate a pintB. T give an example
      C. T make a cmparisnD. T intrduce a tpic
      13. What des the wrd “disruptins” underlined in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. cmplete stpsB. breaks in flwC. increases in speedD. extra energy
      14. What d we knw abut sperm whales frm the passage?
      A. They cmmunicate in quite a similar way t humans.
      B. They prduce cntinuus clicks that sund like pitches.
      C. They create click patterns resembling human vwels.
      D. They culd prduce diphthngs like “ride” and “time”.
      15. What can we infer abut the CETI researchers frm the last paragraph?
      A. They have paid mre attentin t the whales’ vcalizatins than t their behavirs.
      B. They have uncvered the nature f the whales’ scial behavirs and interactins.
      C. They will decde the whales’ calls by bserving their behavirs and interactins.
      D. They will carry ut mre research t better understand the whales’ cnversatins.
      【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. D
