Kristin Hannah’s The Wmen is a searing, deeply cmpassinate nvel that centers n Frances “Frankie” McGrath, a sheltered 20-year-ld nursing student wh jins the Army Nurse Crps during the Vietnam War. Published in 2024, it has quickly becme ne f the mst acclaimed histrical fictins f recent years, praised fr its determined hnesty and vivid strytelling.
Raised in a cnservative, idyllic Suthern Califrnia hme, Frankie initially knws little f sacrifice r suffering. But when her brther deplys t Vietnam, she enlists, driven by the belief that “wmen can be heres”. What fllws is a raw, immersive jurney int the chas f war: endless shifts in vercrwded field hspitals, limited supplies, and the cnstant threat f vilence. Hannah writes with plain realism, capturing bth the physical hrrr f cmbat medicine and the prfund emtinal tll n the nurses wh served.
The nvel’s pwer lies nt nly in its war scenes but in Frankie’s painful hmecming. Like cuntless real female veterans (退伍老兵), she returns t a divided America that refuses t hnr her service — facing indifference, skepticism, and even hstility frm a sciety that insists “there were n wmen in Vietnam”. Her struggle with PTSD and alienatin frm her family and ld life is a stark reminder f the lng, invisible scars f war.
What makes The Wmen unfrgettable is its tribute t the unsung herines f the Vietnam War. These wmen were nt just caregivers; they were resilient, brave, and essential. Hannah’s prse is warm yet straightfrward, drawing readers int Frankie’s transfrmatin frm a naive girl t a battle-hardened healer. Mre than a war stry, it is a testament t curage and the quiet strength f wmen wh served — and were t ften frgtten.
      28. What des the authr think f Hannah’s nvel?
      A. Bring and critical.B. Objective and humrus.C. Mving and straight.D. Serius and puzzling.
      29. What mtivates Frankie t jin the Army Nurse Crps?

      B. Her brther’s service in the Vietnam War.
      C. Her belief in wmen’s ability t be heres.
      D. Her family’s expectatin fr her t serve.
      30. What can we learn frm paragraph 3?
      A. Americans acknwledge the sacrifice f the wmen in the war.
      B. The war leaves Frankie with lng-lasting invisible wunds.
      C. Frankie’s family supprts her thrugh difficulties.
      D. The nvel ignres the veterans’ pst-war life.
      31. What des the authr mean by saying “Mre than a war stry” in the last paragraph?

Ticklishness (怕痒), a universal yet puzzling human respnse characterized by laughter r squirming upn light tuch, has lng intrigued scientists. Recent studies have clarified its physilgical and evlutinary fundatins, revealing it t be mre than a simple reflex r reactin.
Physilgically, ticklishness arises frm interactins between sensry nerves and the brain. Research frm University f Califrnia at Ls Angeles shws that tickle-inducing light tuches activate tw types f nerve fibers: A-beta fibers, which sense gentle pressure, and C-tactile fibers, linked t pleasant tuch. These signals are relayed t the smatsensry crtex (体感皮层) fr tuch prcessing and the anterir cingulate crtex, which regulates emtin and laughter — prducing a blend f pleasure and unease.
Evlutinary bilgy ffers anther key perspective. A 2023 study in Nature Human Behaviur suggests ticklishness evlved as a prtective reflex. In babies, it encurages playful interactin with caregivers, strengthening bnds and teaching avidance f unexpected, ptentially harmful tuches. Adults preserve this reflex t detect ptential threats, such as insects n the skin.
Ntably, self-tickling seldm triggers the same intense respnse as being tickled by thers. Brain imaging reveals the cerebellum — respnsible fr mvement crdinatin and mtr predictin — plays a central rle. When we try t tickle urselves, it anticipates the timing, lcatin, and pressure f the tuch and sends advance signals t suppress the tickle reflex. This dampens sensry input t the smatsensry crtex.
Why are sme peple less ticklish? Key reasns include individual differences in sensry nerve density and brain prcessing. Thse with fewer A-beta r C-tactile fibers may be less sensitive t light tuch. Additinally, in sme individuals, the cerebellum’s ability t predict tuch — even frm thers — can suppress the tickle respnse. Psychlgical factrs such as md and attentin als matter; distractin r calmness may reduce ticklish sensatins.
In cnclusin, ticklishness is a cmplex interplay f sensry prcessing and evlutinary adaptatin. It serves bth scial and prtective functins, linking physical sensatin t emtinal and survival behavirs. While further research may elabrate n individual variatins, current evidence cnfirms it as a significant evlved human trait.
      32. What’s the new finding abut ticklishness?
      A. It is merely a simple physical reflex.
      B. It is mainly caused by psychlgical factrs.
      C. It has clear physilgical and evlutinary rts.
      D. It is unique t human babies and yung children.
      33. Accrding t the 2023 study, what is the evlutinary functin f ticklishness?
      A. T serve as a prtective reflex.B. T help adults make mre friends.
      C. T imprve babies’ sense f hearing.D. T enhance peple’s physical strength.
      34. Why des self-tickling rarely wrk as effectively as being tickled by thers?
      A. The smatsensry crtex is nt activated during self-tickling.
      B. The cerebellum predicts the tuch and cntains the reflex.
      C. Self-tickling cannt activate A-beta and C-tactile fibers.
      D. Peple are usually distracted when tickling themselves.
      35. What d we knw abut peple wh are less ticklish?
      A. They have n A-beta r C-tactile fibers at all.
      B. They are mre likely t feel anxius in daily life.
      C. Their cerebellum is unable t predict external tuches.
      D. They may have fewer sensry nerve fibers related t tuch.

The Warmth in the Heavy Snw
Last Saturday, a recrd-breaking blizzard swept acrss New Yrk City withut warning. The wind hwled like a wunded beast, its icy breath tearing thrugh the streets and rattling every windwpane. Snwflakes pured dwn like a white curtain frm the leaden sky, blurring the familiar skyscraper int a ghstly haze. Visibility drpped t nearly zer. The city that never sleeps fell int an icy silence — every street, sidewalk and rftp all buried under a thick, unbrken blanket f snw that glinted like crushed diamnds in the faint gray light.
I wke up with a grwling stmach, nly t find the refrigeratr cmpletely empty: n milk fr cffee, n bread fr tast, nt an even single egg left. When I checked the cupbard, the shelves were just as bare; there were n daily necessities left at hme. I knew I had t g ut t buy sme urgently, r I’d be stuck withut basic supplies fr the rest f the strm. But when I tried t pen the frnt dr, my hand frze n the handle. It wuldn’t mve even an inch. Heavy snw had piled up tightly against the dr all night, frming a slid wall that lcked me inside. I pushed and pulled again and again. My shulders ached and my breath came in gasps. But all my effrts were in vain. The snw held firm, a silent, unyielding barrier between me and the utside wrld.
Staring ut f the windw helplessly, I watched the snw swirling wildly in the bne-chilling wind. Travel bans had shut dwn almst all traffic acrss the city, and there was n sign f peple n the street. A wave f fear and anxiety swept ver me, cld and sharp as the wind utside. My parents were wrking far away in anther state, and the phne lines had gne dead hurs ag, s I had n way t reach anyne fr help. Just as I sank t the flr, desperate and alne, a faint but firm knck n the dr brke the terrible silence.
