Figure 2: A wrd clud f students tpic preferences fr writing.
When asked what they wuld mst like t write abut in schl if they culd chse, yung writers suggested
a wide range f tpics. A wrd clud visualizes their preferences, where the size f each wrd crrespnds t its
frequency in the respnses (see Figure 2).
Our interviews with students als reveal that they are mst mtivated when writing allws them t explre

At a small shp utside Abilene, seventeen-year-ld Carter Hill rlled in his grandfather’s 1974 Chevy that
hadn’t run since spring. He had careful ntes and a pht f his grandfather in the visr (遮阳板) — a reminder f
why this mattered, why this particular truck needed t run again.
The mechanic, Rn Tate, nticed the ntes and the pht. It struck him that this wasn’t just a brken truck —
it was a cnnectin t smene imprtant, a grandfather’s vehicle that a grandsn was trying t restre.
Rn culd have dne what mst mechanics d: prvided an estimate, fixed the truck efficiently, and charged
shp rates. Instead, he spent evenings shwing Carter hw t d it himself: hw t clean the carburetr, hw t
replace wrn-ut hses, hw t sand the fenders by hand. He did nt d it as an emplyee, nt n the clck, but as
smene wh recgnized that this seventeen-year-ld needed mre than a fixed truck-he needed t cnnect t a
grandfather, t a generatin that built things t last, t a time when vehicles were simpler and mre repairable.
After tw weeks f wrk, the engine finally turned ver with a smth rumble-the sund f an engine cming
back t life after mnths f silence, and the mst satisfying sund in autmtive wrk. It was evidence that all the
hurs, all the adjustments, all the prblem-slving had resulted in smething that actually wrks.
Rn didn’t charge shp rates fr thse tw weeks f evening instructin. Nr did he bill fr his time r
expertise. He gave Carter mre valuable things-knwledge, cmpetence, and the cnfidence that cmes frm
understanding hw smething wrks instead f just paying smene else t make it wrk.
That’s nt just autmtive repair. That’s investing in the next generatin. That’s what true guidance lks like
      when it’s dne right.
      4. Why did Carter want the truck repaired?
      A. T restre its riginal lk. B. T sell it fr a gd price.
      C. T return it t his grandfather. D. T hnr a family memry.
      5. What was special abut Rn’s service t the by?
      A. He wrked during ff-hurs. B. He taught him hands-n skills.
      C. He fixed the truck mre quickly. D. He charged him less fr the service.
      6. Which f the fllwing best describes Rn?
      A. Selfless and caring. B. Efficient and imaginative.
      C. Brave and practical. D. Hnest and knwledgeable.
      7. What is the best title fr the passage?
      A. Value f Restratin. B. A Truck fr Grandfather.
      C. A Lessn Beynd Repair. D. Lve Between Generatins.

During a glden sunset, Sharn Wilsn pinted a thermal-imaging (热成像) camera at a flagship data centre,
revealing the enrmus heat its AI supercmputer had been releasing int the sky. Meanwhile, the facility’s cre
prduct, like many ther AI chatbts, kept generating flds f false r harmful cntent fr users wrldwide. “It’s a
hrrible waste,” said Wilsn, directr f the campaign grup Oilfield Witness.
Wilsn is nt alne in having this cncern. Scientists are watching the AI expansin with unease as it pllutes
the natural wrld with carbn and the digital wrld with dangers ranging frm misinfrmatin t pisnus vides.
Data centres currently cnsume abut 1% f glbal electricity, but that share may jump sn. Their slice f
pwer is prjected t hit 8.6% by 2035, while the Internatinal Energy Agency (IEA) expects data centres t
accunt fr at least a fifth f electricity-demand grwth t the end f the decade.
What if AI culd pay ff its energy debts by saving carbn elsewhere? That idea was put frward in an IEA
reprt, which argued that AI applicatins culd cut emissins (排放) by far mre than data centres prduce. A
research paper reached a similar cnclusin after mdelling cases in which AI wuld help integrate slar and wind
int pwer netwrks, imprve battery chemistry in electric cars, and encurage cnsumers t make climate-friendly
      chices.
The prjected carbn savings carry large uncertainties-greater efficiency can lead t greater use, the IEA
warns, and rebund effects may undercut the gains, such as self-driving cars undermining public transprt. But
ther sectrs are s plluting, the researchers say, AI wuld need t cut their emissins by nly a small percentage
t cver its wn carbn cst.
Ultimately, given the massive energy cnsumed by algrithms (算法), it is essential that AI be emplyed t
“d gd in terms f fighting the climate crisis-designing the next generatin f batteries, tracking defrestatin,”
as Sasha Luccini, climate lead at an AI firm, said, rather than “create scial-media websites filled with rubbish
while data centres are still pwered by cal-fired generatrs.”
      8. What des the underlined wrds “this cncern” in paragraph 2 refer t?
      A. The shrtage f AI service. B. The unreliability f AI utput.
      C. The release f heat by AI centers. D. The misuse f energy by AI systems.
      9. What d the IEA reprt and the research paper in paragraph 4 agree n?
      A. AI can be a net carbn saver. B. AI can be energy-efficient.
      C. AI can prvide cmputing pwer. D. AI can direct electricity distributin.
10 What is the purpse f paragraph 5?
      A. T put frward an ppsite psitin. B. T ffer a mre cmprehensive view.
      C. T add sme backgrund infrmatin D. T demnstrate the previus argument.
      11. What des Sasha Luccini argue abut AI?
      A. Its design calls fr imprvement. B. Its energy use demands restrictin.
      C. Its applicatin requires wise guidance. D. Its develpment deserves public supprt.
      【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. C
      D
Plastic has always been a duble-edged swrd — multi-purpse and cheap, but chemically stable. Traditinal
recycling methds invlve multiple stages f srting, cleaning, and melting (融化), which are energy-intensive and
degrade the material’s quality. Turning plastic int fuel has been explred befre, but existing techniques require
high heat, cmplex catalysts (催化剂), and ften prduce impure results.
Nw, a grundbreaking cperatin between scientists in the US and China has brught the wrld ne step
clser t a real slutin. Using a specially designed catalytic reactin, researchers fund a way t break dwn lng
plastic plymer (聚合物) chains int shrt hydrcarbn mlecules — the building blcks f fuel — in a single
      step.
The team’s secret lies in a nvel catalytic material that perates at medium temperatures — far lwer than
thse used in cnventinal methds. Unlike traditinal recycling, which melts plastic int lwer-grade prducts,
this catalyst essentially reduces plastics int usable hydrcarbn chains in just a few hurs. The utput can then be
further prcessed int fuels fr vehicles r even planes. Accrding t Prfessr Zhang Wei, a chemical engineer
frm the Chinese partner university, the prcess transfrms 95% f the plastic int usable hydrcarbns, leaving
minimal remains and almst n harmful byprducts.
The implicatins f this breakthrugh extend far beynd scientific curisity. If widely used, the ne-step
plastic-t-fuel methd culd dramatically reduce bth plastic waste and nn-renewable fuel dependence.
Prmising as the results are, experts stress that the cst f catalysts, the difficulty f cllecting mixed plastic
waste, and the issue f carbn emissins frm burning fuels are key challenges t be addressed. Fr this reasn,
scientists see the innvatin nt as an end pint, but as a temprary fix tward a cleaner future.
While questins remain, this innvatin marks a hpeful turn in humanity’s lng battle with plastic waste. It
transfrms what was nce pllutin int pwer and demnstrates that the slutins t big prblems ften lie in
rethinking waste nt as garbage-but as ptential.
      12. What is a key advantage f the new methd f recycling plastics?
      A. Lw csts. B. Simple prcesses. C. High security. D. Adjustable reactin.
      13. What des the nvel catalyst help with?
      A. Speeding up waste cllectin. B. Adjusting the perating temperature.
      C. Minimizing harmful byprducts. D. Turning plastics int basic chemicals.
      14. Hw d scientists regard the methd?
      A. A dead end. B. A starting pint. C. A stepping stne. D. A definite answer.
      15. What inspiratin des the innvatin bring t us?
      A. New views create pssibilities. B. Human effrt vercmes challenges.
      C. Clse teamwrk wrks wnders. D. Tugh prblems lead t innvatins.
      【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. A

“Amateurish” hasn’t always been negative, explains authr and activist Karen Walrnd. “It cmes frm the
Latin, meaning ‘ne wh lves’.” Her new bk In Defense f Dabbling makes the case fr “intentinal
amateurism”: finding an activity we’re drawn t but nt necessarily naturally gd at, and sticking with it anyway.
____18____ They include mindfulness, curisity, self-acceptance, play, challenge, cnnectin, and awe. Fcusing
n these helps us “let g f perfectinism” and appreciate the experience.
