I used t want t be a zkeeper, but after becming a wildlife rescue wrker, I fund that this wrk is even mre valuable than I thught. Nt nly can I help injured wild animals, but I can als facilitate their return t the wild. We make every effrt t accmplish this gal: hiding fd under rcks and fallen leaves t simulate (模拟) a natural envirnment, r ding ur best t maintain sme distance frm the animals and prevent them frm bnding with humans.
I am ften asked whether I feel at all sad when it’s time t release the animals — t tell yu the truth, I’m always pretty willing t let them g. All f my effrts have been tward allwing them t return t the wild, and the wild is where they belng, s there’s n reasn fr reluctance n my part. But it is true that smetimes there is n way fr an animal t g back t the wild, r t keep it frm bnding with humans.
Last year, I rescued a light-vented bulbul (白头鹎). The bird, initially lacking feathers, recvered under ur care. It was scheduled fr release during its adlescent perid, during which it’s relatively easy t scialize. But an injury t its flight feathers delayed its return t the wild. The bird imprinted n humans during the fllwing tw mnths, which was a critical cgnitive (认知的) develpment perid, leading it t return t us after being released.
When we engage in wildlife rescue, we have t teach animals hw t maintain a high degree f cautin arund humans. If they becme t trusting f humans, it is very likely that way, ur success depends nt n the animals, r n ur wrk here, but mre s n the attitude humans wuld nt be a bad thing, and ur release attempt culd then be successful.

Nwadays, the wrld is slwly becming a high-tech sciety and we are nw surrunded by technlgy. Facebk and Twitter are innvative tls; text messaging is still a smewhat existing phenmenn and even e-mail is nly a flashing spt n the screen when cmpared with ur lng histry f snail mail. T use a theatrical metaphr (隐喻), these new frms f cmmunicatin prvide a stage n which we can each create ur wn characters, hidden behind a furth wall f tweets, status updates and texts. This unreal state f uncncern can becme addictive as we separate urselves a safe distance frm the cruelty f ur fleshly lives, where we are imperfect, pwerless and insignificant. In essence, we have been prvided nt nly the means t be mre free, but als t becme new, t create and prject a mre perfect self t the wrld. In a recent study f healthy vlunteers, Natinal Institutes f Health researchers discvered that ur brains may replay memries f learning new skills when we rest. NIH researchers mapped ut the brain activity when we learn a new skill, like playing the pian. They fund that during shrt rest, vlunteers’ brains rapidly and repeatedly replayed faster versins f the activity while practicing typing a cde. The mre a vlunteer replayed, the better they perfrmed in later practice.
The study was cnducted at the NIH Clinical Center. Dr. Chen’s team used a sensitive scanning technique t recrd the brain waves f 33 healthy, right-handed vlunteers as they learned t type a five-digit cde with their left hands. The subjects sat in a chair under a scanner’s cap. An experiment started when a subject saw the cde “41234” n a screen and typed it fr 10 secnds, then tk a 10-secnd break. They repeated this practice and rest cycle 35 times.
During the first few trials, the speed f crrectly typing imprved greatly-and then leveled ff arund the 11th cycle. In a previus study, Dr. Chen’s team shwed that mst gains happened during shrt rests, nt when typing. Mrever, the gains were greater than after a night’s sleep and related t a decrease in beta rhythms. In this new reprt, the researchers lked fr smething different in the brain waves.
“We wanted t explre the mechanisms (机制) behind memry strengthening during wakeful rest. Several frms f memry rely n neural (神经的) activity replaying, s we tested this idea fr prcedural skill learning,” said Ethan R. Buch. Ph. D. , a scientist n Dr. Chen’s team and the study leader. Dr. Buch develped a cmputer prgram t understand the brain wave activity related t typing each number in the cde.
Interestingly, they fund that mre replay led t better perfrmance. “We were a bit surprised by these results. Our results supprt the idea that replay activity during waking rest may help individuals learn new skills faster and pssibly help strke recvery. ” said Dr. Chen.
12. What have NIH researchers recently fund?
A. The brain activity slwly flws when we learn a new skill.
B. The value f shrt practice sessins can’t be verestimated.
C. Shrt rest makes n difference t the neural re play f the activity.
D. The frequency f brain replay cntributes t practice perfrmances.
13. What is mainly talked abut in Paragraph 3?
A. The prcess f the research.
B. The facilities f the research.
C. The applicatin f the research.
D. The preparatins f the research.
14. Why did Dr. Buch develp a cmputer prgram?
A. T distinguish the first 11 cycles frm the later nes.
B. T cnfirm the rle f neural replay in skill learning.
C. T explre the ptential effects f prcedural learning.
D. T find ut the reasns fr the changes in brain waves
15. What can be inferred frm the passage abut the ptential benefits f the research findings?
A. Beta rhythms can directly cure strke patients.
B. The findings can bst ffice wrkers’ typing speed.
C. Peple are likely t imprve their new-language learning efficiency.
D. The scanning technique will be extensively used t diagnse neurlgical disrders.
