In early 2023, I visited the Galapags Islands fr a much-needed break. On Flreana Island, I came acrss Pst Office Bay, where a barrel (桶) has served as an infrmal pstbx since 1793. It was first used by sailrs t send mail back hme: they wuld leave letters there, and ther sailrs finding mail addressed t their hme prts wuld take and deliver it when they returned. Tday, turists keep the traditin alive.
The barrel was full f letters and pstcards waiting fr delivery. I brught hme tw pstcards: ne frm a student t a teacher, and the ther frm a girl t her friend. The jy they brught t the recipients gave me great satisfactin and pleasure and planted an idea in my mind - t spend a year delivering such letters while keeping my remte jb.
In March 2024, I returned t the Galapags Islands and selected 55 letters addressed t peple acrss seven cntinents. Relying mainly n the addresses, I lst my way smetimes and asked lcals fr help. Mst peple were shcked at first, but their surprise sn turned int smiles when they understd. There were challenges as well as tuching mments. In Nrway, a wman mistk my selfie (自拍照) stick fr a weapn and called the plice. In Belize, a lve letter reached a man wh had brken up with his partner — and they reunited weeks later. My favurite delivery was in Mexic City — it was a letter frm a daughter t her ill mther, thanking her fr encuraging her t fllw her dreams.
The jurney ended in March this year, but the desire t explre and cnnect cntinues t define my path frward.

Many papers have been published n the cgnitive (认知的) benefits f multilingualism (多语言能力). Beynd the cnversatinal drs it can pen, multilingualism is suppsed t imprve the ability t stay fcused, plan cmplex tasks and adjust t new infrmatin. What is mre striking is that sme studies even suggest peple wh can speak mre than ne language equally well may experience cgnitive decline abut fur years later than thse wh speak nly ne, thugh such claims, as researchers pint ut, are nt always cnsistent.
The gd news is that it is never t late t start learning a new language, but the biggest benefits seem t cme t thse wh master their secnd language fully. A bit f university French des nt, unfrtunately, have the same advantages as deep knwledge and lng experience. Switching languages cnstantly in the curse f a day may be particularly imprtant. Studies f bilingual (双语的) interpreters have prvided sme f the strngest evidence fr this. Fr example, they are faster at repeatedly jumping back and frth between simple additin and subtractin prblems, suggesting generally better cgnitive cntrl.
Bilinguals are nt like thse speaking nly ne language in lts f ways. The child raised in a freign language abrad may have cgnitive and educatinal advantages that have nthing t d with bilingualism. Yet studies have fund striking evidence that in prer parts f the wrld multilingual peple shw the strngest advantages f speaking several languages. Where schling is shrt, bilingualism exercises children’s brains in a way that their schling may nt.
Ellen Bialystk f Yrk University, in Canada, stated bilingualism is nt a cure-all and cmpared it t a slice f hley cheese, fr its cgnitive prtectin is similar t the cverage f a piece f bread affrded by hley cheese. Ding ther things that are gd fr the brain, such as exercise, is like putting the slices tgether. Their hles ccur in different places, and thus cllectively ffer greater prtectin.

A. A teenager grwing up abrad. B. A teenager having language gifts.
C. A student in an undevelped area. D. A student receiving frmal schling.
11. Why is bilingualism cmpared t hley cheese?
A. T prve its rle is crucial. B. T shw it bsts physical health.
C. T explain it is prly studied. D. T illustrate its functin is limited.

In the wdlands f sub-Saharan Africa, smetime deep in ur species’ past, smething strange happened: a bird called ut, nt t warn thers f human presence, but t call attentin t herself. Having fund a beehive (蜂巢), that bird — a hneyguide — called ut t human hney hunters, guiding them in exchange fr a share f the rewards. The behavir can seem incredible: Hw wuld a bird cme t think that peple culd d her a favr? Isn’t life simply bldier than that?
As Rb Dunn argues in The Call f the Hneyguide, it isn’t. Nature is red in tth and claw (爪), but in equal measure, life wrks tgether. Cells hst even smaller life, wrapped in a web f interdependence. Ants might g t war, but they als tend mushrms and even trees as a team. And we humans wrk nt just with hneyguides but with crps and pets. These beneficial relatinships might be the mst imprtant frces in the evlutin f life.
Fcusing n the cmplex relatinships f interdependence and mutual benefit that cnnect different species in an ecsystem, Dunn reminds us that we are interlinked with the rest f nature, and that we need ther species and they need us — a simple message that nevertheless “has becme almst uncnventinal”, he says, “in the cntext f separatin and distance frm the living wrld” in cntemprary sciety.
Our lives are shaped by technlgy, and urbanizatin has nly grwn. Fr instance, the average adult tends t be a hmebdy. Children prefer recgnizing cartn characters t identifying cmmn wildlife species. At the same time, humans harm frests and ther habitats, endangering many species.
We humans ften act as thugh we are all alne, independent f the rest f life. As The Call f the Hneyguide shws, we are nt. It is a call t actin fr a mre beneficial, less lnely future.
12. What des the authr think is strange?
A. Peple and birds find hney tgether. B. A hneyguide asks peple fr help.
C. Hney hunters understand birds’ calls. D. A bird attracts humans successfully.
13. What phenmenn in nature is mainly described in paragraph 2?
A. Humans rely n wildlife greatly. B. Varius creatures live in cnflict.
C. Life evlves in unexpected ways. D. Cmpetitin and cperatin cexist.
14 What des the authr want t explain in paragraph 4?
A Damages t varius wildlife species. B. Children’s limited bservatins f nature.
C. Reasns fr human-nature discnnectin. D. Human’s verreliance n high technlgy.
15. What message is cnveyed in The Call f the Hneyguide?
A. N man is an island. B. There’s strength in numbers.
C. Let nature take its curse. D. Everyne is in the same bat.
