Since the early 1900s, scientists have fund that the csms (宇宙) is getting bigger — and it is speeding up. The frce behind the grwth is called dark energy. Fr many years, the leading mdel, knwn as Lambda Cld Dark Matter (ΛCDM), has believed that dark energy keeps fixed acrss the whle histry f the csms. This simple but useful idea has been the basis (基础) f mdern astrnmy. Hwever, it fails t answer ne key questin: what if dark energy changes?
Recent studies have begun t questin this lng-standing view. Infrmatin frm the Dark Energy Spectrscpic Instrument (DESI) — a high-tech prject — suggests that dark energy might be changing with time. If this is true, it wuld mean a big change frm the standard ΛCDM mdel. While this pints t a mre detailed and develping stry f the csms, it als shws a lacuna in ur knwledge: we still d nt knw hw changing dark energy might affect the frmatin and grwth f the csms.
T deal with that, a team led by Assciate Prfessr Tmaki Ishiyama frm Chiba University did ne f the mst detailed csmlgical simulatins (模拟) ever made. Researchers frm Spain and the US jined in the study, which was published in Physical Review D. Their wrk aimed t find ut hw time-varying dark energy culd influence the csms’s size.
Using tp supercmputer Fugaku, the team ran three large simulatins, each eight times bigger than earlier wrk. One fllwed the standard mdel, while the ther tw included dark energy f different density (密度). By cmparing the different mdels, the researchers culd single ut the effects f changing dark energy. The results shwed that the influence f dark energy variatins alne was small. But when they changed key settings based n DESI infrmatin — especially raising the density by arund 10% — the differences became very clear.
      8. What is the idea f the ΛCDM mdel abut dark energy?
      A. It stays unchanged ver time.
      B. It results frm the csms’s grwth.
      C. It helps keep the balance f the csms.
      D. It cntributes t the frmatin f mdern science.
      9. What des the underlined wrd “lacuna” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
      A. Gap.B. Rise.C. Cntrast.D. Pssibility.
      10. What was the main purpse f Ishiyama’s research?
      A. T create a new csmlgical mdel.
      B. T test hw the supercmputer perfrms.
      C. T explre hw changing dark energy affects the csms.
      D. T cllect mre infrmatin frm the high-tech prject DESI.
      11. What is a discvery f the simulatins accrding t the last paragraph?
      A. The size f the simulatins is a decisive factr.
      B. The DESI infrmatin is nt necessarily crrect.
      C. The density f the dark energy plays an imprtant rle.
      D. The applicatin f supercmputers shuld be strengthened.
      D
Each year during autumn, many areas in the nrthern part f the glbe are treated t an amazing natural view: The leaves n trees turn yellw, red and range.
A lt f factrs cntribute t this seasnal change, and the biggest ne is daylight hurs. As days grw shrter and we have less daylight in winter, trees begin t slw dwn and in the end stp the prcess f phtsynthesis (光合作用). But far frm dying, trees are just taking a rest t survive the cld mnths ahead.
The bright clrs we see cme frm anthcyanin (花青素) in the leaves. As the seasn changes and trees change their grwth activities, anthcyanin is n lnger hidden, making the leaves turn bright red r even dark purple — the clrs that make autumn s special.
Hwever, sme trees dn’t change clr r lse their leaves. These trees are called evergreen trees. They have develped a special ability that lets them keep perfrming phtsynthesis all year rund — thugh the prcess des slw dwn a lt in winter. This nn-stp but much slwer phtsynthesis means evergreens dn’t need t drp their leaves r change clr t save energy.
Gd weather is als necessary fr this clr change. Enugh rain befre autumn, tgether with plenty f sunlight, creates the best cnditins fr leaves t shw all their bright clrs. Mrever, sudden temperature drps — like falling 30 t 50 degrees Fahrenheit in just a few days — can shck the trees. When this happens, trees may lse their leaves early, befre they get the chance t change their typical autumn clrs. By drpping their leaves, trees use much less energy in the cld mnths. This helps them save imprtant energy t get thrugh the hard winter and grw new leaves again the next spring.
      12. What is the mst imprtant reasn fr the seasnal change f leaves?
      A. The increase f rainfall.B. The drp in daylight hurs.
      C. The rise f temperatures.D. The change in lcal tree types.
      13. What is a character f anthcyanin?
      A. It prmtes phtsynthesis.B. It stps leaves frm falling dwn.
      C. It cntrls trees’ grwth activities.D. It appears when phtsynthesis slws dwn.
      14. Why d sme trees lse their leaves early when temperatures drp suddenly?
      A. T save energy fr survival.B. T remve anthcyanin.
      C. T speed up phtsynthesis.D. T get mre sunlight fr grwth.
      15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
      A. The Secret f Evergreen Trees Surviving Winter
      B. The Effects f Sudden Temperature Drps n Trees
      C. The Reasns Behind Autumn Leaves’ Changing Clrs
      D. The Imprtance f Phtsynthesis t the Clr f Leaves
