Sme mthers quietly change the wrld with dirty clthes in ne hand and lve in the ther. And smetimes, it’s nt their strength that changes everything — it’s what they d after they’ve been cmpletely brken.
Kari Cx, a mm in Cullden, West Virginia, knws what it means t lve hard — and lse harder. She and her husband, Bill, a special educatin teacher, have adpted and raised 14 children, many with special needs. Can yu imagine the lve and the disrder? Fr years, she lived the quiet miracle f mtherhd: piles f dirty clthes, sticky flrs, nise arund the dinner table, and hugs that healed places n dctr ever culd.
But even the strngest mthers fall apart smetimes. Thirteen years ag, Kari and Bill adpted Maribeth, a beautiful, brilliant girl with high-functining autism (孤独症) and a black-and-white way f seeing the wrld. While they were lst in the happiness f a family, Maribeth was struck and killed by a car in 2021. It was a mment that shattered the Cx family.
She culdn’t imagine ging thrugh that kind f lss again. She had given her heart — and it was buried with her daughter. S Kari decided she was dne. N mre adptins. N mre risk. N mre rm fr mre heartbreak.
Until ne day, as she was ging thrugh Maribeth’s things, she fund her daughter’s jurnal. Maribeth, the girl wh rarely shared her feelings, had written these wrds t herself: “I was lucky t be given what many may never have — a lving family that will always be here n matter what.”
At that mment, deep sadness cracked wide pen by grace, and smething shifted. The daughter wh Kari thught was her last adptin became the reasn fr mre. That jurnal didn’t just change Kari’s heart — it changed her missin. It made rm fr hpe again.

The nging climate change is ready t have serius and lasting cnsequences fr plants acrss the glbe. A research cnducted by Liverpl Jhn Mres University, UK is primarily fcused n explring hw the nutritinal cntent f fd crps may be affected by the interacting effects f rising CO2 levels and increasing temperatures assciated with climate change.
The research is fcused n ppular leafy vegetables, including kale, rcket and spinach. Fr this prject, these crps are grwn in envirnment-cntrlled grwth rms at Liverpl Jhn Mres University, and the CO2 and temperature levels are changed t lk like the UK’s predicted future climate cnditins.
After the plants have been grwn under climate change cnditins, their nutritinal quality was analyzed. Early results frm this prject suggest that raised levels f atmspheric CO2 can help crps grw faster and bigger, but certainly nt healthier. After sme time, the crps shwed a reductin in key minerals like Ca and certain antixidant cmpunds (抗氧化化合物). These changes were wrsened by rising temperatures.
A key early finding is that different crps have respnded differently t these climate change stressrs, with sme species reacting mre intensely than thers. “This diversity in respnse highlights that we can’t generalize acrss crp species. This cmplexity has been bth fascinating and challenging and reminds us why it’s imprtant t study multiple stressrs tgether,” says Jiata Ugwah Ekele, a PhD student at Liverpl Jhn Mres University, UK.
This nutritinal imbalance pses serius health implicatins fr humanity. While higher CO2 levels can increase the cncentratin f sugars in crps, it can decrease essential prteins, minerals and antixidants.
“This changed balance culd cntribute t diets that are higher in calries but prer in nutritinal value,” says Ms. Ekele. “Increased sugar cntent in crps, especially fruits and vegetables, culd lead t greater risks f extreme verweight and type 2 diabetes — particularly in ppulatins already struggling with these diseases.”
      8. What is the fcus f the study?
      A. Future climate cnditins in the UK.
      B. New types f leafy vegetables in the UK.
      C. The way t grw crps faster in greenhuses.
      D. Climate change and its impact n crp nutritin.
      9. What was the cnditin f the crps grwn fr this research prject?
      A. Thinner air.B. Cntrlled water.
      C. Higher CO2 level.D. Lwer temperature.
      10. Hw des Ms. Ekele sund in the last paragraph?
      A. Annyed.B. Cncerned.C. Satisfied.D. Cnfident.
      11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Bigger crps, fewer nutrientsB. Faster grwth, richer minerals
      C. Warmer climate, balanced crpsD. Higher CO2, healthier vegetables
      D
With ver 75% f prfessinals using AI in their daily wrk, writing and editing messages with AI tls have becme a cmmnplace practice. While generative AI tls are seen t make writing easier, are they effective fr cmmunicating between managers and emplyees? A new study f 1,100 prfessinals reveals a critical paradx (悖论) in wrkplace cmmunicatins: AI tls can make managers’ emails mre prfessinal, but regular use can destry trust between them and their emplyees.
In the study, Cman, a researcher at the University f Flrida’s Warringtn Cllege f Business, and his c-authr, Peter Cardn, surveyed prfessinals abut hw they viewed emails that were written with lw, medium and high AI assistance. Survey participants were asked t evaluate different AI-written versins f a cngratulatry message n bth their perceptin (感知) f the message cntent and their perceptin f the sender.
While AI-assisted writing was generally seen as efficient, effective, and prfessinal, Cman and Cardn fund a “perceptin gap” in messages that were written by managers versus thse written by emplyees. While lw levels f AI help, like grammar r editing, were generally acceptable, higher levels f assistance caused negative perceptins. The perceptin gap is especially significant when emplyees perceive higher levels f AI writing, bringing int questining the authrship, hnesty, caring and cmpetency f their manager.
The impact n trust was significant: Only 40% t 52% f emplyees viewed managers as sincere when they used high levels f AI, cmpared t 83% fr lw-assistance messages. Similarly, while 95% fund lw-AI managers messages prfessinal, this drpped t 69%-73% when managers relied heavily n AI tls.
The study suggests managers shuld carefully cnsider message type, level f AI assistance and relatinal cntext befre using AI in their writing. While AI may be apprpriate and prfessinally received fr infrmatin r rutine cmmunicatins, relatinship-riented messages requiring empathy, praise, cngratulatins, mtivatin r persnal feedback are better handled with minimal technlgical interventin.
      12. What des the “critical paradx” in paragraph 1 refer t?
      A. Emplyees accept AI tls but reject AI-generated messages.
      B. AI-written emails are prfessinal yet ften cntain factual errrs.
      C. AI imprves efficiency but weakens authenticity in wrkplace relatins.
      D. Managers benefit frm AI while emplyees suffer frm heavier wrklads.
      13. What was a key feature f the study’s design?
      A. It fcused nly n cngratulatry message plts.
      B. It cmpared perceptins f different AI assistance levels in emails.
      C. It surveyed a large sample f 1,100 prfessinals acrss industries.
      D. It analyzed real AI-written emails frm actual wrkplace cmmunicatin.
      14. Why might high AI assistance cause negative perceptins?
      A. It is against cmpany plicies n technlgy use.
      B. It reduces the persnal tuch that emplyees value mst.
      C. It raises dubts abut managers’ cmpetence and sincerity.
      D. It makes messages verly cmplex and difficult t understand.
      15. What attitude shuld managers adpt when using AI in their writing?
      A. Appreciative.B. Cautius.C. Oppsed.D. Indifferent.

Our neighbr’s sn, Jake, my lifelng playmate, had becme distant since the last argument ver a stupid rule in a sccer game. We used t play in his backyard tgether. But lately, we even barely said “hi” ver the fence. I felt like a lnely island, stuck between my parents’ busy wrlds and Jake’s new silence.
Hwever, everything changed ne rainy day. A fierce strm hit ur street, and frm my windw, I saw Mr Larsn, f all peple, in frnt f Jake’s huse. A fallen tree branch was blcking his car right there in the driveway. Withut thinking, I ran ut with my raincat. Tgether, we dragged the heavy branch aside.
