On a typical sunny day at the University f Califrnia, Ls Angeles (UCLA), small native bushes (灌木) wave where tidy grasslands used t be, bees fly ver flwers, and students walk n a campus alive with bidiversity.
The new scenery marks a majr milestne in campus sustainability. In 2025, UCLA became the first university in Califrnia t earn the Green Grunds Certificatin frm the nnprfit Re: wild Yur Campus, which recgnizes the schl’s effrts t imprve human health and bidiversity.
Fr years, clleges have used rewilding as a way t restre bidiversity and bring a mre natural lk t their grunds with native plants. But t ften, they miss a critical piece f the puzzle: the chemicals being used elsewhere n campus. While wildflwers bring buzzing bees, true eclgical restratin is weakened if pesticides (农药) and fertilizers are used.
This is why Re: wild Yur Campus created the Green Grunds Certificatin-t center bth chemical eliminatin and rewilding and t link them tgether. Schls that are taking such a hlistic apprach t campus management can be hnred and uplifted.
Adpting a hlistic apprach t land care des mre than just create healthier campus envirnments; it reinfrces the reality that clleges are intercnnected micrcsms (缩影) f larger envirnmental systems. In many cities, universities ffer sme f the largest areas f pen space, yet the chemicals applied t grasslands can impact nearby rivers, lakes, and drinking water. Students and all the teaching staff are increasingly recgnizing this, leading t mre advcacy fr intrducing native species and stpping using harmful pesticides.
Beynd envirnmental health, a rewilding apprach can help safeguard human health. Students are clsely cnnected t the utdr settings f their clleges where pesticides can stay in the air, settle n picnic tables, and be tracked int drm rms. Thrugh a hlistic apprach, institutins can ensure that the grunds students walk n daily are free frm pisnus substances, fr the health f all.
And that’s exactly what sme schls like UCLA are ding. Their leadership shws that sustainability means finding new ways t care fr the land respnsibly-fr peple and fr the planet.
      8. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic f the passage?
      A. By discussing students’ activities.B. By describing a changed landscape.
      C. By shwing students’ lve fr nature.D. By highlighting the functin f plants.
      9. What can we knw abut the hlistic apprach?
      A. It was initiated by UCLA.B. It avids using pesticides.
      C. It fcuses n students’ welfare.D. It is intended t cnnect schls.
      10. Why des the authr mentin “picnic tables” in paragraph 6?
      A. T prmte a healthy lifestyle.B. T suggest safety imprvements.
      C. T discurage utdr activities.D. T stress health risks t students.
      11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Native Plants: Key t Preventing Pllutin.
      B. UCLA’s Hlistic Plan: Fr Safer Classrms.
      C. The Hlistic Methd: Tward Sustainable Campuses.
      D. Sustainability Thrugh Trees: Fr Greener Campuses.

Fr decades “Mnday blues” has been a term fr the cllective gran (叹息) that greets the start f each wrkweek. Mndays cme with higher rates f anxiety, stress and even suicide cmpared with ther days.
The stress and anxiety experienced n Mnday seems t ease as the week unflds. But is the stress and anxiety bilgically distinct? Furthermre, culd the fleeting changes in md leave a mark n peple’s bdy even after they stp wrking? T answer these questins, Prfessr Tarani Chandla frm HKU, lked int the phenmenn, fcusing n the stress hrmne crtisl (皮质醇).
When we experience a stressr, the brain activates the release f crtisl, which helps us t manage shrt-term stress. But cnstant high levels f crtisl disturb the brain and bdily systems, increasing the risk f anxiety, depressin, heart disease, diabetes and besity.
Chandla studied 3,511 participants aged 50 and lder in England, and the results were striking. Older adults wh reprted feeling anxius n Mndays had, n average, 23 percent higher levels f crtisl up t tw mnths later, cmpared with thse wh felt anxius n ther days. And the effect was nt limited t thse still wrking; retirees wh felt anxius n Mndays als shwed higher crtisl.
Why might Mndays, in particular, have a pwerful effect n the bdy? One pssibility is that the shift frm the weekend t the high demands f the week is essentially stressful. Als, sme peple becme anxius n Mndays s rutinely that it becmes an autmatic bdily respnse.
Fr sme peple, Mnday blues are cnstant stressrs. Hspitals may need t plan fr the increased risk f heart attacks and ther health events n Mndays, especially amng lder adults. In additin, internatinal practices like meditatin, mindfulness, regular physical activity r gd sleep might help peple adapt t the start f the week and have lng-term health benefits. Finally, researchers will need t investigate why sme peple are resilient (适应力强) t Mnday anxiety while thers are nt. That questin might pen the dr t interventins that help peple start the week nt just with a gran but with greater resilience.
      12. What des the underlined wrd “fleeting” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Extreme.B. Uncmmn.C. Shrt-lived.D. Far-reaching.
      13. What des the authr intend t d in paragraph 3?
      A. T define a medical term.
      B. T shw ways t handle stress.
      C. T explain hw crtisl helps reduce stress.
      D. T reveal hw stress harms health bilgically.
      14. What did Chandla’s study find abut Mnday anxiety?
      A. Its levels are clsely related t age.B. It is a lifelng burden fr sme peple.
      C. It is the primary challenge peple face.D. Its effects are limited amng the elderly.
      15. Which is ne f the authr’s suggestins t address Mnday blues?
      A. Researchers ding further studies.B. Hspitals keeping track f the ld.
      C. Individuals seeking help frm thers.D. Cmpanies reducing Mnday wrklads.
