They’re in danger f ging extinct because f avian (鸟类的) malaria, a disease spread t birds by msquites. T save them, the American Bird Cnservancy has launched an innvative cnservatin prject. As a drne pilt and prject member, Adam Knx ges int the frest with a key missin: t release mre msquites as part f a scientific interventin.
Instead f chemicals, “this technique uses msquites t fight msquites,” says scientist Christa Seidl, f Maui Frest Bird Recvery Prject. When the msquit prject began, in 2023, helicpters were the best available means. “It’s been a lng rad t get here, with a lt f trial and testing,” Knx says. “But at this pint, we have a system that can fly in these difficult envirnments.” Plus, drnes are quieter, cst less, and allw mre flexibility with timing.
Hneycreepers live in Hawaii, and nwhere else. There used t be mre than 50 species. “Nw there are nly 17,” says Chris Farmer, ABC’s Hawaii prgram directr. Unlike hneycreepers, msquites are nt native t Hawaii. As temperatures have warmed, msquites have mved higher t hneycreeper habitat. A single msquit bite can kill a hneycreeper.
The msquites Knx drps int the frest are males, s they dn’t bite r transmit disease. They’ve been raised in a lab and bred t carry a natural bacteria that prevents them frm reprducing with wild females. When these msquites mate with wild nes, the eggs that are prduced wn’t hatch. “This lwers the msquit ppulatin ver time,” Seidl says, especially since mst females mate nly nce. It als gives hneycreepers time t bunce back.
Cnservatinists aren’t sure hw lng it will take. Until then, Knx will cntinue ding drne drps. And Seidl will cntinue tracking msquit numbers and hneycreeper health. “Everyne is s cmmitted and wrks s hard because we understand that it is ur respnsibility t save these birds,” Farmer says. “And we can d that. There are many things that are ppsed by Rbert F. Kennedy junir, America’s health secretary, and his supprters. One that really upsets them is seed ils. In their telling, the ils are “txic”. Nw sme American fast-fd chains have swapped the ils fr ther fats. Is the stuff as bad as they make ut?
Seed ils are extracted frm crn, syabean, sunflwer and ther seeds. Critics wrry mst abut tw things. The first is that harmful chemicals used in il prcessing may end up in the finished prduct. The secnd is the ils’ cntent f mega-6 fatty acids. This type f fat, ppnents claim, causes cancer, heart attacks and besity. On bth cunts, the scientific evidence says therwise.
A chief cncern fr seed-il ppnents is that linleic acid (亚油酸) , the main mega-6 fat in seed ils, can turn int inflammatry (炎症的) cmpunds in the bdy. Yet it is als brken dwn int sme anti-inflammatry cmpunds. That makes it hard t wrk ut whether it is pr- r anti-inflammatry verall. In trials, increasing participants’ cnsumptin f linleic acid had n effect n inflammatry markers in their bdies. There are als clear benefits: seed ils are high in healthy plyunsaturated (多不饱和的) fats, meaning that chsing them ver saturated fats like butter lwers chlesterl levels, which cuts the risk f heart attacks.
Lng-term bservatinal studies reach equally reassuring cnclusins. A recent ne fund that thse fllwing diets high in vegetable ils lived lnger, healthier lives than thse whse diets were lw in vegetable ils. An earlier study, published by the Wrld Health Organisatin, fund that higher intake f mega-6 fats was linked with lwer death rates.
In shrt, seed ils are unlikely t cause harm — in fact, they are prbably gd fr yu, especially if they are cnsumed in mderatin and supplemented by ther, healthy fats. Overcnsumptin is usually the cnsequence f a generally unhealthy diet, full f fried r ultra-prcessed fds. spn fr spn, seed ils are much healthier than sme f the alternatives champined by their critics.
12. Why d critics ppse seed ils?
A. They are extracted mainly frm seeds f plants.
B. They are n lnger a key ingredient in fast-fd.
C. They are a leading cntributr t several diseases.
D. Their extractin prcedure pses a threat t health.
13. Which f the fllwing might the authr agree with?
A. Omega-6 fatty acids are unhealthy. B. Butter helps reduce chlesterl levels.
C. The effect f linleic acid is cnfirmed. D. Seed ils cntribute t a lnger lifespan.
14. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. Alternative fats advcated by critics are harmful.
B. Seed ils are harmless when cnsumed in mderatin.
C. Seed ils can serve as a supplement fr fats like butter.
D. The nutritinal benefits f seed ils have been undervalued.
15. What is the suitable title f the passage?
A. Dismiss the Dubts: What Is in Seed Oils?
B. Put the Fears t Rest: The Truth Abut Seed Oils
C. Weigh the Optins: Seed Oils r Traditinal Fats?
D. Mind the Threat: The Hidden Danger in Yur Kitchen
