This led t the start f Faces f Santa Ana, a nnprfit rganizatin that befriends and paints prtraits f unhused peple. He chse clrs based n the subject's life stry, creating tuching prtraits.
Petersn sells each prtrait fr a few thusand dllars, putting half int what he calls a "lve accunt(账户)" fr his mdel, and then helps peple use the mney t get back n their feet. Many use the dnatins fr medical care, htel rms and fd.
Over the eight years, Petersn has painted 41 prtraits. But there's mre t the finished prducts than the mney they bring t smene wh's dwn and ut. He's discvered that the buyers tend t cnnect t the stry f the persn in the painting, finding similarities and ften friendship with smene they might have therwise verlked.

Kids wh use scial media scre lwer n reading and memry tests, cmpared t thse wh use little r n scial media. The findings, published in JAMA, shw a link between scial media use and weaker cgnitin (认知) in teenagers.
Led by Dr. Jasn Nagata, the study used data frm the Adlescent (青春期的) Brain Cgnitive Develpment (ABCD) Study. This nging research has been tracking ver 6,000 children frm ages 9 - 10 int early teens. They divided kids int three grups based n their scial media use habits: little t n use (58%), gradual increase t abut an hur daily by age 13 (37%), and a "high increasing" grup spending three r mre hurs daily by age 13 (6%). All grups tk cgnitive functining tests, including reading and vcabulary tests.
Imprtantly, even thse using abut ne hur f scial media daily perfrmed 1 t 2 pints lwer n reading and memry tasks cmpared t nn - users. The high - use grup scred 4 t 5 pints lwer.
Psychlgist Sheri Madigan nted this "dsage effect" (剂量效应) — prblems appear even with small dses. Thugh small nw, these gaps may widen as teens increase scial media use in later adlescence. And anther recent research shws that hurs n scial media increase later in adlescence, ntes Nagata. "We wuld expect that when they hit age 15, 16, 17, their use will be much higher," which might lead t even larger gaps in cgnitin and learning in later years, he adds.
Adlescence is an imprtant perid fr brain develpment. Heavy scial media users' brains becme mre sensitive t the kinds f likes, cmments and rewards they might get frm thse f the same age. This may explain why their brains change less fr ther necessary learning tasks.
The new study's findings strngly supprt the need fr age - specific rules, such as age limits n scial media apps. Denmark is nt allwing kids under 15 t use it, and Australia is requiring cmpanies t prevent accunts fr thse under 16. Madigan hpes this will create a beneficial "trickle effect" fr children glbally.
28. What is the main finding f the study?
A. Shrt screen time hardly affects teens.
B. Scial media effects decrease later in teens.
C. Scial media use may weaken teen's cgnitin.
D. Habits f kids' using scial media are changing.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A. The methd f the study.B. The purpse f the test.
C. The results f the research.D. The applicatin f the data.
30. What des the phrase "dsage effect" suggest abut scial media?
A. It wrks just like medicine.B. Even small use causes prblems.
C. Its effects grw with years.D. Its effect keeps unchanged ver time.
31. What is Madigan's attitude twards the plicies in sme cuntries?
A. Psitive.B. Cncerned.C. DubtfulD. Uncaring.

Mre than a fifth f the glbal cean has becme darker ver the past tw decades, accrding t University f Plymuth research.
The prcess, knwn as "cean darkening", happens when things in the tp part f the cean change, which stps sunlight frm reaching far belw the surface.
The study, published in Glbal Change Bilgy, fund 21% f the glbal cean had becme darker between 2003 and 2022. And mre than 9% f the cean—an area similar in size f Africa—had seen light reduced by ver 50 meters, with a further 2.6% experiencing a reductin ver 100 meters.

While the exact effects f the changes were nt whlly clear, Dr. Davies stated that cean darkening culd affect the air humans breathe, the fish they eat, and the wrld's ability t fight climate change. Prfessr Tim Smyth warned that animals depending n light culd becme clser t the surface, increasing cmpetitin fr fd and pssibly causing fundamental(根本性的) changes in entire marine ecsystem(海洋生态系统). "Our findings shuld be a real cncern fr everyne," Dr. Davies stressed.
Dealing with this challenge requires an integrated effrt. Scientists stress reducing greenhuse gas emissins is fundamental t slwing cean warming. At the same time, imprving the adaptability f marine ecsystems is equally imprtant t help them deal with these changes. Strengthening glbal mnitring thrugh satellites and ther bservatins is als seen as imprtant fr tracking these changes. We need t take cllective actin t stp this trend, which threatens bth marine bidiversity and critical human life.
32. What happens in cean darkening?
A. The grwth f algae is decreasing.
B. Artificial light brightens the cean.
C. Creatures mve clser t the cean tp.
D. Less sunlight reaches deep int the cean.
33. Accrding t Tim Smyth, what is affected by cean darkening?
A. The reprductin f fish.
B. The cean water temperature.
C. The way t address climate change.
D. The survival f light - dependent animals.
34. What des the underlined wrd "integrated" prbably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Renewed.B. Unified.C. Well - planned.D. Specialized.
35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Greenhuse Gases: A Driver f Ocean Changes.
B. Sunlight Lss: A Gradual Decrease f Marine Habitat.
C. Ocean Darkening: A Threat t Marine Life and Humans.
D. Plymuth Research: A Discvery f the Ocean's Darkening.
