Uday Bhatia’s enthusiasm fr technlgy began in childhd. His interest was awakened when he received a drne (无人机) in the furth grade, stimulating a curisity abut hw machines wrk. By 14, he had taught himself cmputer science and created his first vide game n Rblx. Hwever, Uday’s passin wasn’t limited t cding and gadgets — he was deeply aware f scietal issues. During the pandemic, he develped FindOurTutr, an e-tutring platfrm t help students cntinue learning remtely.
At 16, Uday, as part f a mentrship prgram, visited Bichpuri village in Uttar Pradesh and discvered a critical prblem: the villagers faced six-t-eight-hur-lng pwer utages. “When I learned that children were using flashlights and kersene lamps t study, I wanted t find a slutin,” he recalls. His research revealed that while mst villages in India had been electrified, unreliable pwer supply remained a cntinuing issue in many rural areas, with sme states like Rajasthan and Uttarakhand enduring pwer cuts lasting 10 t 12 hurs a day.
Determined t help, Uday spent the next six mnths learning frm instructinal vides and gathering secnd-hand cmpnents. He wrked in his terrace (屋顶) wrkshp, experimenting with different designs until he develped the Smart OutageGuard (OG), a lw-cst backup lightbulb (灯泡) with a lithium-in battery. The bulb, priced at Rs 250, abut half the cst f ther ptins, features dynamic-lumen technlgy and pulse-width mdulatin, which allws users t adjust the brightness. This feature extends the bulb’s illuminatin capacity t up t 10 hurs, depending n the brightness level.
Since its launch in May 2022, Smart OG bulbs have reached 10,000 hmes acrss eight states. Uday als funded Uday Electric, a fr-prfit venture that cllabrates with distributrs, NGOs, retailers, and CSR prgrams t prvide affrdable lighting t semi-electrified rural areas. Fr nn-electrified regins, he develped the Glw Grid, a slar-pwered lamp, launched this mnth.
Uday’s innvatins have earned him several awards, including the 2023 Diana Legacy Award. His lng-term gal is t prvide lw-cst energy t every hme, and he’s just getting started.
      24. Uday Bhatia’s experience in Bichpuri village influenced him t ________.
      A. develp an interest in cmputer scienceB. create a lw-cst, backup-based lightbulb
      C. launch an e-tutring platfrm fr studentsD. study pwer supply systems in ther villages
      25. What d we knw abut Uday’s inventins?
      A. They make energy easier t access.B. They bring innvatin t glbal markets.
      C. They fcus n sustainable energy slutins.D. They prvide affrdable lighting fr rural areas.
      26. Which f the fllwing best describes Uday Bhatia?
      A. Innvative and cmmercial.B. Determined and scially aware.
      C. Creative and envirnmentally cnscius.D. Technlgically skilled and cmpetitive.
      C
In 1993, a ship sailed int the Pacific Ocean carrying nearly 1,000 punds f irn, then pured it all int the waves. The next mrning, the water turned a little greenish due t newly emerged phytplanktn The micrrganisms, which need irn t grw, draw CO₂ ut f the air.
Fertilizing the cean with irn is a frm f geengineering, a set f technlgies fascinating fr their ptential t meaningfully impact Earth’s systems, and cntrversial fr the same reasn. As the planet heats, geengineering is emplyed t help cntrl it in nvel ways, whether researchers mist the skies with sea salt t increase hw much sunlight cluds reflect r invent machines t suck greenhuse gases ut f the atmsphere. Engineering hme-grwn planktn sunds like a less dramatic methd. But the field is s new that scientists dn’t yet knw whether geengineering with micrrganisms wuld really be a gentler frm f climate interventin (干预). Micrrganisms, after all, play enrmusly subsequent rles in the wrld arund us and within us. Fr the best chance f keeping Earth liveable, scientists need t understand exactly hw the micrscpic creatures might be useful, and perhaps even preferable t the mre sci-fi appraches t cling ff the wrld.
One favred methd centers n methane, a greenhuse gas accunting fr 30% f the rise in glbal temperature. Mary Lidstrm, a prfessr, is wrking n genetically mdifying bacteria that naturally cnsume methane, s that the micrrganisms pull even mre gas frm the air. The bacteria wuld live inside facilities knwn as bireactrs. They culd be psitined near knwn methane surces — landfills and wetlands — t minimize the amunt f methane that makes it int the air.
Expanding any kind f climate engineering is tricky. Significantly slwing warming caused by methane wuld require abut 300,000 bireactrs t be active fr 20 years. And the dwnstream effects are difficult t predict, let alne cntrl. Fr example, the irn put int the Pacific Ocean culd have cnsequences fr ther regins f the wrld’s seas.
Als, there’s nearly as much uncertainty abut intended effects. Scientists dn’t knw fr sure hw effective these cncepts will prve t be. The 1993 ship expeditins, fr example, didn’t stick arund very lng; the jurneys were expensive, and scientists culdn’t remain at sea t determine what exactly was happening in the depths. Carbn stlen ut f the atmsphere shuld remain buried fr at least a century fr maximum impact. Yet it’s entirely pssible that if the phytplanktn desn’t sink t deep enugh waters, it just gets eaten by the rganisms in the surface cean, and that CO₂ just returns t the atmsphere.
The htter the planet gets, the mre attractive geengineering will likely seem. Shrt f large-scale behaviral changes glbally, we d seem t be cmmitting urselves t an engineered slutin n ur current rutes. We might have t decide, sner than we think, which levers we need t pull, large r small.
      27. What can we learn abut geengineering?
      A. Ocean irn-fertilizatin is widely used.
      B. Sunlight-reflectin methd is cst-effective.
      C. Methane-eating bacteria are being imprved.
      D. Gas-sucking machine is a theretical cncept.
      28. What can we infer frm Paragraph 4 abut the geengineering appraches?
      A. Their impact n the ecsystem is ignred.
      B. Their implicatins are hard t predict.
      C. They call fr decades f preparatin.
      D. They are mnitred cntinuusly.
      29. The irn-fertilizatin experiment may achieve its intended effects if ________.
      A. the target micrrganisms survive
      B. mre deep-sea rganisms are tested
      C. scientists culd remain at sea lnger
      D. the phytplanktn grws faster and better
      30. What might be the best title fr the passage?
      A. Hw Will Geengineering Benefit Earth’s Systems?
      B. Hw t Cl the Wrld Withut Blcking the Sun?
      C. Hw t Steal Carbn with Sci-fi Methds?
      D. Hw Can the Engineered Slutin Deliver?
      D
The age f artificial intelligence has begun, and it brings plenty f anxieties. Almst all f the cnversatins abut risk are abut ptential cnsequences f AI systems pursuing gals that depart frm what they were prgrammed t d and that are nt in the interests f humans. But this is nly ne side f the danger. Imagine what culd happen if AI des d what humans want.
“What humans want,” f curse, isn’t a mnlith. Different peple have cuntless ideas f what cnstitutes “the greater gd.” Even if we culd get everyne t fcus n the well-being f the entire human species, it’s unlikely we’d be able t agree n what that might lk like.
That seems t be the reasn that DeepMind recently funded an internal rganizatin fcused n AI safety and preventing its use by bad actrs. But it’s nt ideal that what’s “bad” is ging t be determined by a handful f individuals at this ne particular cmpany — cmplete with their blind spts and persnal and cultural biases (偏见). The ptential prblem ges beynd humans harming ther humans. Many times thrughut histry, what’s “gd” fr humanity has cme at the expense f ther sentient (有知觉力的) beings. Such is the situatin tday.
In the US alne, we have billins f animals kept in cages, subjected t cruel treatment, and denial f their basic psychlgical and physilgical needs at any given time. entire species are dminated and systematically butchered s that we can have melets, hamburgers, and shes.
If AI des exactly what “we” want it t, that wuld likely mean enacting this mass cruelty mre efficiently, at an even greater scale and with mre autmatin and fewer pprtunities fr sympathetic humans t step in.
A better gal than aligning (一致) AI with humanity’s immediate interests wuld be what I wuld call “sentient alignment” — AI acting in line with the interests f all sentient beings, including humans, all ther animals, and, shuld it exist, sentient AI. This will strike sme as aggressive, because what’s gd fr all sentient life might nt always agree with what’s gd fr humankind. It might smetimes, even ften, be in ppsitin t what humans want r what wuld be best fr the greatest number f us.
Peter Singer, a philspher, argued that an AI system’s ultimate gals and pririties are mre imprtant than it being aligned with humans. “The questin is really whether this super intelligent AI is ging t be benevlent and want t prduce a better wrld,” Singer said, “and even if we dn’t cntrl it, it still will prduce a better wrld in which ur interests will get taken int accunt.”
I’m with Singer n this. Decentering humankind t any extent, and especially t this extreme, is an idea that will challenge peple. But that’s necessary if we’re t prevent ur current belief frm spreading in new and awful ways.
      31. The authr mentins the rganizatin funded by DeepMind t ________.
      A. questin a slutinB. clarify a belief
      C. illustrate an exampleD. explain a practice
      32. Which f the fllwing can best present the idea f “sentient alignment”?
      A. AI brings living beings the same rights.
      B. AI prmtes the bnds amng species.
      C. AI benefits the develpment f humans.
      D. AI meets the demands f sentient creatures.
      33. What des the underlined wrd “benevlent” in Paragraph 7 prbably mean?
      A. AmbitiusB. GenerusC. ResurcefulD. Cmpetitive
      34. The authr’s majr cncern in develping AI is that ________.
      A. AI pses a threat t the wrld
      B. sciety’s mrals are in decline
      C. humans priritize their wn needs
      D. sentient beings deepen cultural biases

If yu listen t sme self-imprvement lectures abut success, yu’ll hear a familiar saying: Hustle (忙碌) harder. It sunds like success is just a matter f willpwer and that the life f yur dreams is within reach. Many yung peple are buying int this mindset, spending every waking hur wrking tward ambitius gals, nly t find themselves wrn ut and unfulfilled.
Hustle culture prmises success, but it ften leads t burnut and disappintment. The truth is that success and fulfillment dn’t cme frm cnstant struggle. They cme frm smething deeper and mre sustainable: persistence (坚持).
Hustle culture praises big gals. But what the experts wn’t tell yu is that mst f thse gals require a mix f timing, luck, and smetimes even genetics. N matter hw hard yu hustle, success isn’t always within yur cntrl. Persistence culture, n the ther hand, takes a different apprach. Instead f fcusing n massive, high-risk gals, it emphasizes cnsistent effrt ver time. It encurages grwth, learning, and steady imprvement—factrs that are within yur cntrl.
Hustle culture fcuses n gals, ignring the prcess. It tells yu t chase success at all csts, even if that means ding things yu hate alng the way. Fr example, yu lve pdcasting (制作播客). Yu enjy the cnnectin with yur audience. But if yu fllw hustle culture, yur fcus shifts t prfit, audience grwth, and scial media engagement. T “succeed,” yu have t learn marketing strategies that yu dn’t actually enjy.
Persistence culture, in cntrast, priritizes the prcess itself. It asks: D yu enjy what yu’re ding? When yu lve the prcess, yu dn’t need external apprval t keep ging. Success becmes a byprduct f cnsistency and passin. Instead f measuring success by external factrs, it asks: Hw can I imprve? Maybe yur pdcast isn’t getting millins f dwnlads, but are yu becming a better interviewer?
Are yu develping new skills? These are the measures that matter because they’re within yur cntrl.
      40. Hw d many yung peple feel after fllwing the “hustle harder” mindset?
      ________________________________________________________
      41. Where d success and fulfillment cme frm?
      ________________________________________________________
      42. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
      > Hustle culture fcuses n massive, high-risk gals, measures success by external factrs and priritizes the prcess.
      ________________________________________________________
      43. Hw are yu ging t put “Persistence Culture” int practice in yur daily life? (In abut 40 wrds)

根据文章第三段“Mary Lidstrm, a prfessr, is wrking n genetically mdifying bacteria that naturally cnsume methane, s that the micrrganisms pull even mre gas frm the air.(Mary Lidstrm教授正致力于对一种天然以甲烷为食的细菌进行基因改造,让这类微生物能从空气中吸收更多甲烷。)”
根据文章第四段“Expanding any kind f climate engineering is tricky. Significantly slwing warming caused by methane wuld require abut 300,000 bireactrs t be active fr 20 years. And the dwnstream effects are difficult t predict, let alne cntrl. Fr example, the irn put int the Pacific Ocean culd have cnsequences fr ther regins f the wrld’s seas.(推广任何形式的气候工程,都并非易事。
根据文章第五段“The 1993 ship expeditins, fr example, didn’t stick arund very lng; the jurneys were expensive, and scientists culdn’t remain at sea t determine what exactly was happening in the depths. Carbn stlen ut f the atmsphere shuld remain buried fr at least a century fr maximum impact. Yet it’s entirely pssible that if the phytplanktn desn’t sink t deep enugh waters, it just gets eaten by the rganisms in the surface cean, and that CO₂ just returns t the atmsphere.(以1993年的那次海上实验为例,研究团队并未在海上长期驻留:远洋考察耗资巨大,科学家们无法一直停留在海上,去探明海洋深处究竟发生了哪些变化。 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“The htter the planet gets, the mre attractive geengineering will likely seem. Shrt f large-scale behaviral changes glbally, we d seem t be cmmitting urselves t an engineered slutin n ur current rutes. We might have t decide, sner than we think, which levers we need t pull, large r small.(地球温度越高,地球工程的吸引力就可能越大。除非全球范围内进行大规模的行为改变,否则我们似乎确实正沿着当前的道路走向一种人为的解决方案。我们可能需要比想象中更早地做出决定,明确我们需要拉动哪些杠杆,无论大小。)”以及全文内容可知,文章围绕应对全球变暖的地球工程展开,介绍了投铁培育浮游生物、基因改造甲烷细菌等具体手段。选项B“Hw t Cl the Wrld Withut Blcking the Sun?(如何不遮蔽太阳而给地球降温?)”
A 32. D 33. B 34. C
根据文章第三段“That seems t be the reasn that DeepMind recently funded an internal rganizatin fcused n AI safety and preventing its use by bad actrs. But it’s nt ideal that what’s “bad” is ging t be determined by a handful f individuals at this ne particular cmpany — cmplete with their blind spts and persnal and cultural biases(偏见).(这似乎就是 DeepMind最近成立一个专门负责人工智能安全以及防止其被不良分子滥用的内部组织的原因。但让“不良”行为由这家公司里少数几个人来判定,这显然并不理想——这些人还会有自身的盲点以及个人和文化上的偏见。)”可知,作者先说明DeepMind成立该机构的初衷是应对人类意愿难以统一的AI安全问题,随即用“but”转折,指出该机构由少数人界定“不良”的方式并不理想,存在明显弊端。由此可见,作者提及这一机构,是为了质疑这一应对AI风险的解决方案的合理性。故选A。
根据文章第六段“A better gal than aligning(一致)AI with humanity’s immediate interests wuld be what I wuld call “sentient alignment” — AI acting in line with the interests f all sentient beings, including humans, all ther animals, and, shuld it exist, sentient AI.(相较于让人工智能与人类的即时利益保持一致,一个更优的目标,我将其称之为“感知生命对齐”——即人工智能的行为符合所有有感知能力的生命的利益,包括人类、其他所有动物,倘若有感知能力的人工智能真的出现,也将其纳入其中。)”
根据划线单词所在语境““The questin is really whether this super intelligent AI is ging t be benevlent and want t prduce a better wrld,” Singer said, “and even if we dn’t cntrl it, it still will prduce a better wrld in which ur interests will get taken int accunt.”(Singer表示:“问题的核心,其实在于这款超级智能人工智能是否……,想要打造一个更美好的世界。
D 36. E 37. G 38. C 39. A

They feel wrn ut and unfulfilled.
由文章第二段中“The truth is that success and fulfillment dn’t cme frm cnstant struggle. They cme frm smething deeper and mre sustainable: persistence (坚持). (事实是,成功和成就感并非来自持续的挣扎。它们来自更深层次、更可持续的东西:坚持。)”可知,成功和成就感来自更深层次、更可持续的东西——坚持。故答案为:They cme frm smething deeper and mre sustainable: persistence.
由文章第四段中“Hustle culture fcuses n gals, ignring the prcess. (忙碌文化关注目标,忽视过程。)”以及第五段中“Persistence culture, in cntrast, priritizes the prcess itself. (相比之下,坚持文化将过程本身置于首位。)”可知,“Hustle culture fcuses n massive, high-risk gals, measures success by external factrs and priritizes the prcess.” 故答案为:Hustle culture fcuses n massive, high-risk gals, measures success by external factrs and priritizes the prcess. Accrding t the passage, hustle culture ignres the prcess instead f priritizing the prcess itself.
I’ll priritize cnsistent effrt ver grand gals. Fr instance, in pdcasting, I’ll fcus n imprving interviewing skills and strytelling daily rather than chasing dwnlads. By valuing small, measurable prgress and passin, I’ll build sustainable grwth withut burnut.
