Celebrating bth Hanukkah and Christmas gives my children the chance t enjy duble presents—ften mre than they can actually use r appreciate. What gets lst this time f year, I ften feel, especially while rushing arund r spending hurs nline t buy gifts, is the imprtance f giving back.
Last year, t balance receiving with giving, ur tw daughters each chse a charity, and ur family made a dnatin (捐赠). This year, I plan t d the same ver the hlidays.
In cnversatins with ther parents, I’ve learned that the best way t teach ur children t think f thers and want t give back during the hlidays is t d that wrk thrughut the year. As parenting cach Vicki Hefle explains, “If we give ur kids all year lng, they may struggle t change their mindset and think abut giving back during the hlidays.”
Danielle Le Ry, a mm frm Chicag, shared hw she and her husband have been mindful f this balance since their children were brn. Instead f giving gifts t each ther, they put tgether a small basket f gifts fr thse wh prvided the family a service thrughut the year, such as mail carriers and deliverymen.
Hefle, a mm f five, says small actins, like teaching children hw t help their cmmunity, are key t fstering (培养) a generus spirit. Parents shuld lk fr pprtunities t get their children invlved: Is the child interested in animals? Excited abut perfrming in frnt f elderly peple r reading t them?
Hefle remembers when ne f her daughters dnated part f her pcket mney t a lcal animal shelter (收容所) every week. “We did that fr three years,” says Hefle. The shelter eventually invited her daughter t see what her mney had paid fr. “And that was a pivtal mment fr everyne in the family. Suddenly, they all lked at each ther and thught, ‘This matters. This is real.’”

Srry, exercise addicts — all thse intense (剧烈的) wrkuts might nt be helping yu lse as much weight as yu thught. Peple wh are the mst physically active seem t becme mre efficient (高效的) at using energy, accrding t a recent study.
“This isn’t an argument fr nt exercising,” says David Stensel, a prfessr wh studies exercise at Lughbrugh University in the UK. “Exercise is still gd fr yu in a hst f ther ways. But it helps us understand why nt everyne gets the weight lss they expect with exercise.”
In the study, researchers used wearable tracking devices t measure the activity levels f 332 peple with a wide range f lifestyles. They als measured hw much energy peple used each day by having them drink special water that can be traced. As expected, thse wh were mderately active burned mre energy than thse wh were inactive. Hwever, thse wh were the mst active burned the same amunt f calries as thse wh were mderately active.
This suggests that smene wh already walks t wrk and runs a bit may nt burn mre calries by ding lnger runs, says Herman Pntzer, ne f the authrs f the study. Pntzer explains that we might adjust t exercise in tw ways. One is that we start mving arund less. The ther is lwering ur resting metablic rate (代谢率) by cutting energy use in a range f bdily functins.
Earlier studies that suggested exercise increases peple’s resting metablic rate may have been wrng by testing peple t sn after exercise, when their metablism had nt fully settled.
“Even thugh gym machines shw hw many calries yu burn during a wrkut, active peple make up fr it by burning fewer calries during the rest f the day,” says Pntzer, pinting ut that even with intense exercise, mst f the calries burned during the day cme frm ur bdies maintaining basic physilgical functins.
      28. What is a misunderstanding f intense exercise accrding t the text?
      A. It certainly helps us lse weight.B. It requires a high-calrie diet.
      C. It actually leads t a sharp pain.D. It must be dne n a daily basis.
      29. What can be learned abut the finding frm paragraph 2?
      A. It shws weight lss is achievable.B. It gives us new ideas abut wrkuts.
      C. It is an argument fr nt exercising.D. It prves exercise is harmful t the ld.
      30. What is the main purpse f the new study?
      A. T determine the impact f diet n exercise.
      B. T find the best exercise habit fr weight lss.
      C. T measure the weight lss effects f running.
      D. T understand hw exercise affects calrie burn.
      31. What des Pntzer think f highly active peple?
      A. They lse weight mre easily than thers.
      B. They eat mre t maintain bdily functins.
      C. They burn fewer calries utside f exercise.
      D. They shuld have a rest shrtly after exercise.
      D
Sme 500 years ag, beavers were hunted fr their fur and meat, and disappeared frm Britain. Nw they are making a cmeback — at least in small pckets in Sctland — and that may be gd news fr fld prtectin and the restratin (修复) f wetlands, thugh farmers remain wrried that beaver dams (堤坝) will harm their crps and grasslands.
It seems that beaver dams might help prevent flding, cleanse water, and benefit fish ppulatins and wetland ecsystems. “When it rains, mre water gets stred in pls behind the dams, and when it’s drier, water is gently released (释放) t keep rivers flwing,” says Richard Brazier, a prfessr at the University f Exeter.
Fur years ag, tw beavers were released in an area that was just a small river flwing thrugh deserted wdland. Within a cuple f years, they’d transfrmed the river int a rich, wetland habitat. “They’ve built 13 dams and had a gd effect n hw the water flws thrugh the site,” says Brazier. This is the kind f measure that sme experts believe wuld have reduced the impact f the flds in Sctland.
In additin t fld cntrl, beavers may help fish ppulatins. Studies by Paul Kemp f the University f Suthamptn shw that fish ppulatins in rivers with beavers are larger and healthier. The beaver pls prvide deep water that fish prefer.
Hwever, beavers dn’t always have a psitive impact. In Sctland, where there are 50 t 200 beavers alng the River Tay, beaver dams smetimes blck drainage ditches (排水沟) and create fld risks in farming areas. Beavers als bite trees beside a busy rad, and make hles in anti-fld embankments.
S what d these varied impacts mean fr reintrducing beavers in Sctland?
A reprt by Scttish Natural Heritage presents several ptins, including remving all beavers r allwing their uncntrlled reintrductin. The Envirnment Agency is als clsely mnitring the situatin t decide whether the benefits f reintrducing beavers utweigh the risks.
      32. Why d farmers feel wrried abut beaver dams?
      A. They will reduce water strage.B. They will pllute drinking water.
      C. They will destry farming land.D. They will increase fish ppulatins.
      33. What is Brazier’s attitude t the reintrductin f beavers?
      A. Psitive.B. Dubtful.C. Unclear.D. Uncaring.
      34. What is paragraph 5 mainly abut?
      A. The latest research int beavers.B. The negative effects f beavers.
      C. The benefits f beavers n fld cntrl.D. The influence f beavers n lcal plants.
      35. What can we infer abut beavers in Sctland?
      A. Their relcatin has been finalized.B. They will be cmpletely remved.
      C. They will be put under strict cntrl.D. Their future is still being debated.
