And I needed t practice letting her d it. We repeated the pattern f me hitting the ball and her missing it a few times befre she finally gt it back ver the net. “This is fun,” she said with a mixture f surprise and delight and then she smiled widely.

Here’s a new idea: Adding zigzags (锯齿形) t walls culd help cl an verheated building, even as glbal temperatures rise. Researchers devised a new electricity-free standing wall design that cls buildings mre efficiently than cnventinal walls, reducing daily average wall temperatures by a cuple degrees Celsius, reprted August 9 in Nexus.
Buildings currently cnsume abut 40 percent f glbal energy and accunt fr ver a third f glbal carbn dixide released int the atmsphere, mstly frm energy-intensive air cnditining. Researchers seek designs t redirect slar energy and reduce this lad.
Mst “radiative cling” fcuses n rfs t absrb slar energy and radiate it int space, but university materials scientist Yuan Yang ntes that walls are harder t cl due t space expsure and grund heat absrptin. Thus, an effective design must accunt fr bth factrs.
Hence: zigzag walls. Yang’s team assumed that by wrinkling the upright surface and cating the parts with different materials—mre reflective materials facing dwnward and mre heat-releasing materials facing upward—the wall culd absrb less heat than a cnventinal straight wall.
Simulatin (模拟) shwed that zigzag walls gained less heat frm the grund than cnventinal walls by abut 2.3 degrees n average, rising t 3.1 degrees during the httest part f the day. Testing a miniature backyard versin f their design in New Jersey in summer 2022 fund similar results.
The gal was t design smething that wuld be cmmercially appealing, Yang says. Wrinkled walls already exist, he ntes. Therefre, this design, easy t prduce and expand, may prvide cnsumers with a slutin t zig when the climate zags.
      8. What can be learned abut zigzag walls frm Paragraph 1?
      A. They help cl buildings.
      B. They cnsume electricity.
      C. They are cnventinal walls.
D They rise with glbal temperatures.
      9. Why des the authr mentin rfs?
      A. T explain a cling methd.
      B. T cmpare with zigzag walls.
      C. T shw rfs are easier t cl.
      D. T emphasize the imprtance f walls.
      10. Hw did Yang’s team make zigzag walls less heat-absrbing?
      A. By using reflective rfs.
      B. By cating with same materials.
C By wrinkling and cating differently.
      D. By facing heat-releasing materials dwnward.
      11. What is implied in the last paragraph?
      A. The design is hard t prduce.
      B. Wrinkled walls are nt ppular.
      C. Cnsumers prefer straight walls.
      D. The design may be cmmercialized.
      【答案】8. A 9. A 10. C 11. D
      D
In a recent unusual experiment, researchers attached a large pair f cartnist rund eyes t the frnt f a small, self-driving vehicle. This pair f eyes n the frnt f driverless vehicles culd give pedestrians (行人) a better idea f whether they’ve been seen by the vehicles. That is quite imprtant fr pedestrians when it cmes t determining the perfect mment t crss in frnt f ncming traffic.
In the study, the vlunteers — nine men and nine wmen — were asked t decide whether r nt t crss the rad as the car apprached. Fur situatins were tested in ttal; tw when the car was fitted with eyes, and tw when it wasn’t. The researchers measured hw ften peple hesitated t crss when it was in fact safe t d s, and hw ften they chse t crss when it was dangerus. Overall, the presence f the eyes led t safer and smther rad-crssing experiences fr the participants.
Hwever, there was a clear difference between genders in the results. Fr men, the eyes nly really helped in dangerus situatins, warning them t pause when they might therwise prceed. Fr wmen, the eyes bsted cnfidence by signaling it was safe t crss. While ther factrs like age and backgrund might have als influenced the participants’ reactins, the researchers believe this is an imprtant pint, as it shws that different rad users may have different behavirs and needs, which require different cmmunicatin ways in ur future self-driving wrld.
Ultimately, the aim is t keep everyne as safe as pssible, if and when autnmus driving becmes the nrm (常态). At the mment, it seems that is a lng way ff yet — giving scientists mre time t lk at the effect. “There is nt enugh investigatin int the interactin between self-driving cars and the peple arund them, such as pedestrians,” says cmputer scientist Take Igarashi. “S, we need mre investigatin and effrt int such interactin t bring safety and assurance t sciety regarding self driving cars.”
      12. What des the underlined wrd “That” in paragraph 1 refer t?
      A. Assessing if pedestrians are aware f rad cnditins.
      B. Making self-driving vehicles mre visually appealing.
      C. Knwing if mving vehicles ntice pedestrians’ presence.
      D. Keeping enugh distance between vehicles and pedestrians.
      13. What effect did the cartnish eyes have n participants accrding t the study?
      A. Participants’ imprved rad crssing behavir.B. Participants’ tendency t ride in driverless cars.
      C. Researchers accurate measurement f car speed.D. Researchers ability t predict pedestrian behavir.
      14. What lessn can makers f self-driving vehicles learn frm this study?
      A. They need t imprve the visibility f their vehicles.
      B. They need t enhance the safety measures in their vehicles.
      C. They need t adpt diverse cmmunicatin methds in their design.
      D. They need t make vehicles affrdable t peple frm all walks f life.
      15. What might be Take Igarashi’s attitude t the study?
      A. Disapprving.B. Objective.C. Critical.D. Subjective.
      【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. B
