The stry begins in 2016, during the last semester f my philsphy undergraduate, when I decided t becme a writer after being inspired by mdern and classic wrks I was reading. I earned a jurnalism master’s frm New Yrk University, wrked at Trnt Life magazine and freelanced. I had sme success interviewing the frmer mayr Jhn Try and reprting fr The New Yrk Times. But behind the scenes, I was cnstantly stressed and struggling t make rent.
Then things changed. This past summer, a friend invited me t cach a small grup f 11-year-ld vlleyball players fr their upcming club seasn. I always lved vlleyball but pushed it aside fr academics, thinking it culdn’t be a career. I jumped at the pprtunity t cach. Every mrning in late summer, I met the kids in a park in midtwn Trnt and trained them n fundamentals: passing, setting and serving. I had gne frm interviewing the mayr t playing vlleyball in a park with kids. Hw had it cme t this?
Over the years, labring in jurnalism had drained me f my yuthful spirit. I had started writing because it was a free means f expressin, but the stress f making a living thrugh it was endless. I wanted t be serius and well-respected, but it defeated the purpse f fllwing my passin. Vlleyball reawakened a spirit f playfulness in me. While shuting at the kids abut techniques and strategies I’d nt thught abut in a decade, I didn’t have t sit behind a cmputer. The parents paid me fairly and prmptly and I didn’t have t fear that my wrk wuld be utsurced t artificial intelligence.
S I went all in. I fund a gym space and started running my wn clinics. I created an rganizatin called Super Vlley, which runs sessins fr athletes aged 5-18 every Saturday.
Things are ging decently well s far. Like many small businesses, I’m at the mercy f a rising cst f living, a harsh ecnmy and cnsumers wh might devte their Saturdays t smething else. But I’ll keep ging because this vlleyball thing rewards me in ways that g well beynd mney r jurnalistic fame.

B. He gave up philsphy t fcus n jurnalism and writing.
C. He wrked as a full-time writer after graduatin.
D. His jurnalism career brught him bth achievements and struggles.
5. What made the authr turn t vlleyball caching?
A. The high pay frm vlleyball clinics.
B. The fear f AI replacing his jurnalism wrk.
C. The stress and lss f passin in jurnalism.
D. The invitatin frm a prfessinal vlleyball club.
6. What des the underlined wrd “utsurced” in Paragraph 3 mean?

7. What cnclusin can we draw abut the authr’s present situatin?
A. His rganizatin Super Vlley nly serves adult athletes.
B. His vlleyball business is free frm ecnmic challenges.
C. He regrets giving up his jurnalism career cmpletely.

Cats with dementia (痴呆) have brain changes similar t thse f peple with Alzheimer’s disease, ffering a valuable mdel fr studying the cnditin in humans, a study says. Scientists discvered a build up f the txic (有毒) prtein amylid-beta in the brains f cats with the cnditin — ne f the defining features f Alzheimer’s disease. The findings ffer a clearer picture f hw amylid-beta may lead t age-related brain dysfunctin (功能障碍) and memry lss in cats, experts say.
Many lder cats develp mentia, leading t behaviral changes such as increased vcalizatin r mewing, cnfusin and disrupted sleep — symptms similar t thse seen in peple with Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists at the University f Edinburgh examined the brains f 25 cats f different ages after they had passed away, including thse with signs f dementia. Pwerful micrscpy images revealed a build-up f amylid-beta within the synapses (神经元的突触) — cnnectins between brain cells f lder cats and cats with dementia. Synapses allw the flw f messages between brain cells and are vital t healthy brain functin. Their lss strngly predicts reduced memry and thinking abilities in humans with Alzheimer’s disease.
The research team als fund evidence that astrcytes and micrglia — types f supprt cells in the brain — surrunded r ‘ate’ the affected synapses. This prcess, called synaptic pruning, is imprtant during brain develpment but can cntribute t synapse lss in dementia. Experts say the findings will nt nly help t understand and manage dementia in cats but, given their similarities, culd als cntribute t the develpment f future treatments fr peple with Alzheimer’s disease.
Scientists studying Alzheimer’s disease in the past have relied heavily n genetically mdified rdents (啮齿类动物) mdels. Rdents d nt naturally develp dementia, and studying cats with dementia has the ptential t advance knwledge and help develp treatments fr bth cats and peple, experts say.
8. What makes cats with dementia a valuable mdel fr studying Alzheimer’s in humans?
A. They shw similar behaviral changes t humans with the disease.
B. Their brain structure is identical t that f Alzheimer’s patients.
C. They develp dementia thrugh genetic mdificatin.
D. They prduce mre amylid-beta than ther animal mdels.
9. What did the University f Edinburgh scientists discver abut cats with dementia?
A. Their brain cells lse the ability t cmmunicate entirely.
B. Amylid-beta builds up in the synapses f their brain cells.
C. Synapse lss nly ccurs in very ld cats withut dementia.
D. Supprt cells in the brain stp functining in advanced stages.
10. Why are cats cnsidered better than rdents fr Alzheimer’s research?
A. Rdents live t lng t study age-related changes.
B. Cats develp dementia naturally, unlike genetically mdified rdents.
C. Rdents cannt prduce amylid-beta in their brain cells.
D. Cats’ brain structure is mre cmplex than that f rdents.
11. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Hw Dementia Affects Cats’ Behavir and Brain Functin
B. The Rle f Amylid-beta in Brain Diseases f Humans and Cats
C. Why Rdent Mdels Are Less Effective in Alzheimer’s Studies
D. Cats with Dementia: A Valuable Mdel fr Alzheimer’s Research

Shrter wrking hurs have ften been cnnected t better health. Spain’s majr trade unin UGT, which supprted the refrm in December 2024, supprts reducing wrking hurs even further: advcating fr a fur day, 32-hur week. Accrding t the Eurpean Parliament, mre than 300 millin peple wrldwide suffer frm wrk-related mental health issues. The Eurpean Unin (EU) is wrking n legislatin (立法) t define the “right t discnnect”.

Alicia, an IT cmpany emplyee in Madrid, Spain, wh prefers nt t reveal her surname, said the change wn’t make much difference t her. Due t Spain’s cmmn split shifts (交替轮班), she will still finish wrk in the evening. “Ideally, I’d wrk frm 8a.m. t 3 p.m. t have time fr my children and sprts,” she said.
CEOE, Spain’s main lbby (游说团体) fr emplyers, argues that a 42.5-hur week wuld bst prductivity t match that f ther Eurpean cuntries. Meanwhile, Spanish Ecnmy Minister Carls Cuerp warned that the law shuld be pstpned, as small and medium-sized businesses will bear mre than half f the plicy’s impact, and cmpanies may need mre time t adapt.
12. What can we learn abut Spain’s new wrking week refrm?
A. It has already been apprved by the parliament.
B. Emplyers might be punished if they dn’t bey the new rules.
C. All businesses must cmplete the change by the end f 2024.
D Wrkers will get less pay after the refrm is carried ut.
13. Why des Spain’s majr trade unin UGT supprt reducing wrking hurs further?
A. T help small businesses reduce csts.
B. T imprve wrkers’ health and well-being.
C. T match the prductivity f ther EU cuntries.
D. T prmte the “right t discnnect” legislatin.
14. What is Alicia’s attitude twards the new refrm?
A. Dubtful.B. Supprtive.C. Excited.D. Indifferent.
15. What cncern d ppnents f the refrm express?
A. Wrkers’ prductivity will decrease sharply.
B. The “right t discnnect” will be vilated.
C. Small and medium businesses may struggle t adapt.
D. Spain will fall behind ther Eurpean cuntries in ecnmy.

It was a freezing December afternn, with snwflakes dancing in the wind like tiny white butterflies. Lily, a 16-year-ld student, pulled her cat tighter arund her, her breath frming little cluds in the cld air as she walked hme frm schl. At the crner f Maple Street, there std an ld ak tree that had watched ver the neighbrhd fr decades. Under it, Mr. Harris, an 80-year-ld man with silver hair and warm eyes, had sld hand-knitted scarves every winter fr the past five years. His scarves were always ppular — passers by ften stpped t admire the neat stitches (针脚), and kids lved pinting ut the little animal patterns he secretly wve int sme.
Tday, thugh, the usual wden stall — plished smth by years f use, with a small “Handmade with Lve” sign — was empty. Instead, a weathered cardbard bx, its edges frayed frm the cld, sat under the tree, its lid prpped pen by a pinecne. A crumpled nte, written in shaky handwriting, was taped t it: “Free t thse in need — stay warm, friends. N need t pay, just pass the kindness n.” Curius, Lily brushed ff the snw and lifted the lid. Inside were six scarves, each flded neatly. Just as she ran her finger ver a sky blue scarf stitched with stars, a faint, rasping cugh came frm behind the tree.
Lily turned and gasped. Mr. Harris was leaning heavily against the trunk, his shulders hunched, his face as pale as the snw n the grund. His hands, usually steady as he knit, were trembling, and his usual wlen hat was askew. “Mr. Harris! Are yu all right?” she asked, rushing ver. He stumbled trying t stand, s she helped him sit n a snw-dusted branch. “Just a cld, dear, nthing t fret abut,” he said weakly, his vice thin. “Wke up this mrning feeling dizzy, culdn’t set up the stall tday. But these scarves — they tk me all week. Didn’t want them t sit here and get frgtten.” Lily ndded, her heart squeezing. She rushed t the nearby café, where Mrs. Patel, the wner, knew Mr. Harris well, and brught back a steaming cup f ht cca. He sipped it slwly, and as the warmth spread, a faint pink returned t his cheeks. “Yu’re a gd girl, Lily,” he said, giving her a small smile.
