Are yu curius abut the cean and eager t build smething with yur wn hands? Middle and high schl students (grades 7—12) nw have the chance t participate in the Underwater Rbt Challenge, a natinal event that cmbines creativity, engineering, and cean science. The task is simple yet exciting: design and build a small rbt that can wrk under water, and discver hw technlgy can help prtect ur seas.
      Hw des it wrk?
Teams must send drafts and a shrt descriptin f hw their rbt will mve, keep its balance, and finish tasks. Marine engineers will review all plans, give feedback (反馈), and select up t 40 teams in the end. Rbts shuld be battery-pwered, n lnger than 40 cm, and safe t use under water.
      What happens in the pl?
Rbts face a 5-minute test in a large pl. They need t cllect flating bjects, pass thrugh underwater hps (圈), recrd a 30-secnd vide f the “deep wrld”, and finally return t the starting line. Every mve is filmed, and teams later study the data t write reprts. The best reprts will win teams a place at the Natinal Yuth Marine Technlgy Cnference, where up t fur students per team may be present.
      What abut csts and awards?
Participating in the Challenge is free, but teams must cver materials, shipping, and travel if necessary. T help, nn-lcal presenters can receive 400 in travel supprt. Prizes are 500, 300 and 150 respectively, with winning rbts shwn in an nline exhibitin.
      Why jin?
This Challenge ffers far mre than a schl prject. It is a chance t test ideas, gain real engineering experience, and add a shining pint t yur cllege applicatins — all while explring the wnders f the cean.

When Michelle Jacksn retired at 56, she felt as if a dr had suddenly clsed. After decades as an engineer designing high-speed trains fr British Rail, the nce-busy rhythm f meetings, deadlines, and prjects was gne. The silence that fllwed felt heavier than she had expected. “What am I ging t d nw?” she asked herself, faced with lng days and t much quiet time.
Luckily, five years later, she fund her answer. At 61, Michelle picked up her first camera, determined t learn smething entirely new. As a beginner, she jined a lcal walking and phtgraphy grup, ften spending hurs utdrs experimenting with settings she barely understd at first. She als signed up fr nline curses in phtgraphy and Phtshp, insisting, “If I’m ging t d smething, I’ll d it prperly.”
Michelle always lved nature. In her twenties, she hiked lng distances such as the 268-mile Pennine Way in nrthern England. Yet back then, she never thught f bringing a camera. Only after retirement did she realize that phtgraphy culd preserve what had always tuched her: the quiet wnder f wild places and animals.
Her hearing lss, which nce pushed her int retirement, has sharpened her visin. She ntes that the weakening f ne sense can strengthen anther. This heightened perceptin, cupled with great patience, allws her t tlerate lng waits in nature — whether fr seabirds t frm a heart with their heads r fr a deer t enter the twilight.
Nw in her mid-60s, Michelle has wn natinal and internatinal awards. She spends at least 20 hurs a week in the field, hiding under nets fr cver r lying in wet grass, always ready fr the excitement f the unexpected. Yet fr her, success is nt measured by awards. “Each time I see an animal appear,” she says, “my heart races. If yu truly seek them, yu will find them.”
      4. What pushed Michelle t take up phtgraphy?
      A. Her interest in nline curses.

Humans are experts at rearranging matter. Advances in chemistry have given us lifesaving drugs, massive agricultural yields, and s n. But many f ur chemical creatins, like plastics and s-called frever chemicals, have an unpleasant tendency t hang arund, shwing up in ur water, fd, and even ur bdies. It can feel disastrus: With the prducts f ur technlgy nw wven int remte ecsystems and ur wn flesh, there’s n escape fr us.
Hwever, we are nt the nly chemical engineers. Plants turn air int wd and sunlight int sugar, while micrbes (微生物) perfrm remarkable functins. Using micrbes fr waste cleanup is already a prven technlgy. Many wastewater treatment plants rely n micrbes t break dwn harmful substances in the waste water, thugh sme cmplex cmpunds stay irremvable. Cmmercial micrbial prducts are als used t treat waste frm paper factries, textile factries, and farms, as well as t clean up il and gas spills in enclsed (密闭的) spaces.
Yet, these micrbial prducts have limitatins. Beneficial micrbes are ften utcmpeted by lcal species in the wild, and even in enclsed tanks, they eventually die ff. The key t vercming such challenges, accrding t micrbilgist Jiandng Jiang, is t craft and spread intentinally designed micrbial cmmunities, r micrbimes.
T create custmized micrbimes, Jiang and thers are using a bttm-up apprach. They identify the tasks they want their micrbes t perfrm and then use tls t decide species capable f finishing thse tasks. The gal is t design a cmmunity where micrbes wrk cperatively, with sme breaking dwn pllutants int manageable parts fr thers t cnsume, and thers prviding supprting rles.
In the future, advances in synthetic (合成的) bilgy and genetic engineering may enable scientists t develp custmized micrbimes capable f breaking dwn even mre stubbrn targets. While the use f genetically engineered r fully synthetic micrbe cleanup crews in the wild is still a lng-term visin, experts believe widespread use f custmized micrbimes designed with the bttm-up apprach culd ccur within the next decade.
      8. What is a majr prblem f human chemical innvatins?
      A. They invlve a rather lng prductin cycle.
      B. They are t expensive t prduce massively.
      C. They are less efficient than natural chemical prcesses.
      D. They have severe impacts n the envirnment and humans.
      9. What des the text say abut the current micrbial prducts?
      A. They require testing in a wider cntext.
      B. They perfrm wrse in enclsed tanks.
      C. They break dwn pllutants with ease.
      D. They need specific wrking cnditins.
      10. Hw des Jiang’s bttm-up apprach imprve micrbial cleanups?
      A. By stressing teamwrk amng micrbes.
      B. By relying heavily n existing lcal species.
      C. By using genetically engineered micrbes frm the start.
      D. By selecting single species that can perfrm multiple functins.
      11. What is the experts’ attitude twards the applicatin f custmized micrbimes?
      A. Psitive.B. Dismissive.C. Mixed.D. Wrried.
      D
Beneath the Viphya Muntains in Malawi lies Mzimba, a district where pverty runs deep. Malawi’s GDP per capita is barely six hundred dllars, and there are few pprtunities fr children. But in classrms where chalk nce faded and teachers struggled with vercrwded lessns, smething unexpected has appeared: interactive tablets.
Since 2023, the gvernment, wrking with a UK nn-prfit called Onebillin, has intrduced adaptive devices that teach literacy and numeracy (计算能力) in bth Chichewa and English. What makes these tablets remarkable is nt simply that they deliver lessns, but that they adjust. A child uncertain abut basic numbers is guided patiently thrugh simple prblems, while anther, cnfident with letters, is swiftly advanced t harder passages. Rarely has educatin in rural Africa been s individualized.
That such technlgy matters is beynd dubt. Randmized trial has fund that children using the tablets fr merely ne hur daily gained the equal f fur additinal mnths f learning within just ver a year. Even mre impressive is the predictin: these skills may add mre than sixteen thusand dllars t lifetime earnings, a sum extrardinary in ne f the wrld’s prest natins.
N teachers have resisted. Overwhelmed by a student-teacher rati (比例) that ften exceeds 70:1, they welcme the devices, fr while children are engaged with interactive exercises, teachers can fcus n guidance rather than endless repetitin. Indeed, rarely has a refrm been s highly endrsed by bth educatrs and students.
Hwever, challenges remain. Limited electricity makes slar panels essential, and cncerns abut damaged r lst tablets cannt be ignred. Yet, cmpared with the cst, the benefits are vast. Fr every dllar spent, researchers calculated mre than ne hundred dllars f scial value returned. Nt nly is this an innvatin; it is a revlutin. By allwing each child t learn at his r her wn pace, the tablets sw seeds f cnfidence and pssibility — seeds that, nce planted, may reshape an entire generatin’s future.
      12. What did Malawi’s gvernment d in 2023?
      A. It established a nnprfit rganizatin.
      B. It adjusted its fcus n literacy and numeracy.
      C. It strengthened the rle f English in educatin.
      D. It integrated tailred teaching int the classrm.
      13. What did the trial n the devices reveal?
      A. They helped build scial skills.B. They bre fruitful results.
      C. They delivered fixed cntent.D. They ran ut f pwer quickly.
      14. What des the underlined wrd “endrsed” in paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Intensified.B. Develped.C. Appreciated.D. Criticized.
      15. Which can be the best title fr the text?
      A. Teachers’ Rles Change with Educatinal Innvatin
      B. Interactive Tablets Reshape Rural Educatin in Malawi
      C. The Tugh Educatinal Situatin in Pr African Areas
      D. Challenges f Applying Technlgy in Rural Classrms

While research is still in its early stage, therapists agree that fawning can keep peple safe in threatening envirnments but becmes harmful when it cntrls everyday life.
Why? Because the bdy stays n high alert even when there’s n danger. Jsephsn herself grew up in a tense hme, always smthing ver her father’s anger. ____18____ Peple wh fawn cnstantly mnitr thers’ mds, believing, “I can’t be OK unless they’re OK.”
____19____ First, dn’t assume yu’ve dne smething wrng. Pause and ask if the stry in yur head is really true. Secnd, check yur peple - pleasing habits. Instead f saying “N prblem” when it actually is, try being hnest: “That was hard fr me.” Start small with safe situatins. Finally, aim fr authentic cmmunicatin. Clear wrds build strnger relatinships than cnstant guessing.
Jsephsn reminds us that we cannt cntrl ther peple’s happiness. We might bend ver backward t make a partner smile r a c - wrker apprve, but their mds are ultimately their wn respnsibility, nt urs. ____20____
      A. This feeling wasn’t unique.
      B. Make hnest cmmunicatin yur gal.
      C. Jsephsn ffers ways t break this cycle.
      D. Remving fawning is easier said than dne.
      E. It means pleasing thers t avid cnflict.
      F. Later, as a therapist, she saw hw cmmn this pattern is.
      G. Real freedm begins when we stp trying t manage hw thers feel.

Eli’s ntebk slipped frm his hands as his father’s car rushed ut f the driveway — anther early mrning, anther quiet gdbye. Thmas Cle rarely spke: n “gd mrning”, n “hw was schl”, just punishing wrkdays at his cnstructin cmpany, building skyscrapers while Eli grew up feeling invisible. Their huse was neat but cld: a sptless kitchen, a hme ffice piled with blueprints, and n phts f father and sn n the walls. Every time Eli watched his friends hug their dads and laugh with them, his heart ached a little mre, and the thught that his wn father didn’t care abut him sank even deeper.
“It seems as if I were living with a stranger,” Eli nce cmplained t his best friend, his eyes wet. Thmas lst his wife when Eli was five, and since then, wrk had becme his escape. He’d get up and leave hme at 5 a.m., return after 9 p. m., t tired t chat, believing prviding fr Eli — paying his schl fees, buying him whatever he needed — was enugh. But Eli was hungry fr wrds, warmth, prf that he mattered. “He never asks abut my sccer games, and never remembers my birthday,” he’d cmplain, ignring hw Thmas always left a warm breakfast n the cunter, and hw his clthes were always flded neatly.
One rainy evening, Eli rde his bike hme as usual. Unexpectedly, he lst his balance n the wet rad and fell dwn. The next thing he knew, he was being rushed t the hspital. His father, Thmas, had been called frm wrk and hurried ver t his side. When Eli wke in the hspital, he saw his father — disheveled, eyes bldsht, his wrk bts still caked in mud. He didn’t say much, but just adjusted Eli’s pillw, handed him a glass f water, and sat silently by the bed. It turned ut that Thmas tk the next tw weeks ff wrk — smething n ne at his cmpany had ever seen. He cked Eli’s favrite fd, helped him shwer and change with gentle, awkward mvements, and read t him at night — sftly yet hesitantly, as if he was afraid t break the silence.
