In Antarctica, my team really wanted t capture the mment when emperr penguin (企鹅) chicks jump int the cean fr their first swim. We had been in Antarctica fr tw mnths befre it was time fr these chicks t fledge. Fledging is when birds grw feathers that help them fly r, in the case f penguins, swim. Mm and Dad have headed ut t sea fr gd, and the five-mnth-ld chicks are realizing their parents aren’t cming back: They must hunt fr themselves. S these penguin “teenagers” frm little grups and start waddling (摇摆) tward the sea tgether. The yung penguins lk messy as they shed the sft feathers that keep them warm and grw ut their adult swimming feathers. Each has a unique by-band-style haircut.
The penguins must walk abut 15 miles frm the hme atp an enrmus ice shelf t reach the water’s edge. We fllw the birds frm afar n snwmbiles. They crwd tgether at the end f the path and stare dwn like, “what’s that?” They’ve never seen the cean befre! T my amazement, I see several hundred chicks gather at the edge f a 50-ft ice cliff! They stand tgether fr fur hurs, staring at the rugh water belw. Finally ne chick steps in frnt f the thers, waddles t the edge f the cliff and dives ff the side. I watch in fear, afraid the bird wn’t resurface in the water after the lng fall. But then it makes it, back up! It swims farther ut t sea, never lking back.
At first the ther penguins are like “Oh my gsh, what did Steve just d?” But then they realize it’s safe t jump. They begin t pur ff the cliff, several little sft balls at a time. Sme jump ff stylishly, and thers slip and fall backward. Sme even flap their wings as if they’ll fly. This dive is their entrance int adulthd. They’ll swim ut t sea and wn’t return t the hme fr several years. Hw lucky we are t see this huge mment in their lives.

Jammed rads, lud nises, suffcating (令人窒息的) smg. Fr sme peple, living in the city can be stressful. But a grwing bdy f research shws sme city birds can be mre aggressive than their rural twins, suggesting they t feel the pressures f city life.
Generally, animals that live in cities tend t be blder and mre aggressive — bth characteristics that enable them t survive in such cmplex habitats. “Individuals that can’t deal with cnstant disturbance, such as nise, peple, cars, etc., wuld be unlikely t thrive in an urban habitat,” says Jeremy Hyman, a prfessr and department chair f bilgy at Western Carlina University.
Sme birds may becme mre aggressive because cities are rich in fd surces — and s there’s strng cmpetitin t establish a fthld. “Only the mst aggressive males can manage t hld a territry in this place where lts and lts f birds wuld like t have a territry,” says Hyman.
But fd scarcity may als make sme urban species mre aggressive, and s birds have t fight an awful lt in rder t maintain a large enugh territry t get the resurces that they need. High levels f stress caused by nise and ther factrs might als play a rle in making birds mre aggressive, ntes Hyman.
In sme cases, aggressin seems t be “a wrthwhile cst,” says Sarah Fltz, a behaviral eclgist at Radfrd University. Hwever, a big unanswered questin is whether birds learn t be aggressive during their lifetime. But what scientists d knw is that sme birds can be highly adaptable. “Aggressin definitely has a genetic cmpnent t it,” says Fltz. “But als, we knw that when we change envirnmental factrs, birds change their aggressin.”
Overall, Fltz says scientists are still trying t understand just hw much urban density (密度) different species can tlerate and which characteristics f an urban envirnment influence aggressiveness the mst. “We’ve gt all these little pieces,” she says, “But it’s still cming t gather t make a bigger picture, s it’s srt f an unfinished puzzle.”
      8. Why are birds in the city mre aggressive?
      A. They need t adapt the envirnment.
      B. They are annyed by city’s disturbance.
      C. They have such characteristics in the rural.
      D. They hate peple in the city.
      9. What can be inferred frm Hyman’s statements?
      A. Birds in the urban will die ut.
      B. Male birds will ccupy all the urban habitats.
      C. Cnflict will always exist despite sufficient fd.
      D. Stress plays a mre critical rle in bird’s aggressiveness.
      10. What plays a rle in birds’ aggressin?
      A. Gene and envirnment.B. Evlutin and structure.
      C. Bdy and envirnment.D. Gene and structure.
      11. What des Fltz think f the research?
      A. PrmisingB. CmmnC. CriticalD. Meaningless
      D
A new study published in the Jurnal f Remte Sensing has revealed that current satellite systems underestimate ttal CO2 emissins (排放) frm U.S. thermal pwer plants (热电站) by 70% (±12%). The research, led by scientists frm the Chinese Academy f Sciences, highlights remte sensing technlgy, the cre technlgy f current satellite systems, has imprtant gaps, including pr spatial reslutin, limited precisin, and infrequent revisit cycles. It als suggests that next-generatin satellites — designed with a reslutin f 0.5km, a precisin f at least 0.7 ppm, and daily mnitring capabilities — culd reduce errrs t belw 20%. This advancement wuld significantly enhance glbal carbn accuntability.
Thermal pwer generatin accunted fr 46% f the glbal increase in CO2 emissins in 2021, emphasizing its critical rle in climate actin. Current satellites, including NASA’s OCO-2 and OCO-3, have difficulty detecting small facilities, which make up 94% f cal-fired pwer plants and 97% f gas-fueled plants. The study analyzed data frm 1,060 U.S. pwer plants using 2021 satellite data and fund that existing systems recrded nly 29% (±12%) f ttal emissins, mainly frm larger facilities.
The researchers used Gaussian plume mdels and high-reslutin ERA5-Land meterlgical (气象的) data t accunt fr time variability in plant peratins and atmspheric disturbance, thus bettering emissin estimates. The study als assessed appraching missins like the Eurpean Unin’s Cpernicus Anthrpgenic CO2 Mnitring Missin (CO2M), set t launch in 2025 with 0.7 ppm precisin, 4 km2 reslutin, and 5-day revisit gaps, as well as China’s TanSat-2, which is designed fr 1 ppm precisin and daily glbal cverage. Thrugh cnsiderable tls and prfund research, these new systems culd detect 52% and 44% f ttal U.S. pwer plant emissins, respectively, marking a significant imprvement ver current capabilities.
Accurate emissin lists are vital fr the Paris Agreement’s Glbal Stcktake, which measures prgress tward limiting glbal warming t 1.5°C. “Current satellites prvide unreliable data, weakening climate cmmitments,” stated Dr. Cheng Tianhai, the study’s crrespnding authr. “Next-generatin systems culd fill these gaps, making emissins measurable and actinable.”
      12. Which writing technique des paragraph 1 skip?
      A. Offering statistics.B. Making cntrasts.
      C. Giving a definitin.D. Quting a study.
      13. What causes inaccurate CO2 emissin data?
      A. Recrding methds are utdated.B. Mnitring facilities are lacking.
      C. It is difficult t track small devices.D. It is hard t detect large equipment.
      14. What des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
      A. The methds f precise mnitring.B. The advances in emissin detectin.
      C. The increases in China’s CO2 emissins.D. The mechanisms f emissin mnitring.
      15. Which wrds can best describe future satellite systems?
      A. Precise and reliable.B. Adaptive and prtable.
      C. AI-pwered and super-fast.D. Predictive and data-based.
