In tday's fast - paced wrld, cffee and naps prmise sharper fcus and lnger days. Typically, we are tld t avid cffee befre ging t bed, r we will have difficulty falling asleep. But bth
naps and caffeine (咖啡因) can reset the brain. S, if we cmbine bth, culd they have a strnger effect?
Sleepiness isn't just a feeling — it's the result f chemical and bilgical prcesses bth at wrk. In humans, ne f the key players is adensine, a substance that activates receptrs which slw nerve transmissin (传导), making us feel sleepy. It steadily builds up in the brain as ur cells burn energy thrughut the day. As we sleep, adensine is brken dwn until the brain can functin nrmally again. Caffeine will fill and blck adensine receptrs. With thse receptrs ccupied, adensine can't stay and slw brain activity. Instead, nerve cells keep firing and we feel awake.
Caffeine takes abut 20 - 30 minutes t kick in, rughly the length f an ideal nap. Cnceptually, the s - called "caffeine nap" is theretically slid, but evidence is thin. Nw, scientists are starting t test the thery mre strictly. In a pilt study published in 2020, researchers fund that a caffeine nap in the wrkplace — which invlved cnsuming 200 mg f caffeine immediately befre a 30 - minute rest — reduced tiredness and bsted cgnitive (认知的) perfrmance.
While the initial findings are prmising, researchers admitted the studies are relatively small and labratry - based. Other researchers have nted similar shrtcmings, calling fr mre studies that test caffeine naps in a wider range f real - life situatins. There are als individual differences t cnsider. Sme peple are mre r less likely t nap, while thers have unusually high sensitivity t caffeine.
While caffeine is effective fr imprving attentin and fcus, caffeine naps will never be a prductivity silver bullet — r a replacement fr a gd night's rest. Still, sme at - hme experimentatin is wrthwhile and it is recmmended t start with smaller amunts. Have a cup f cffee befre yur next nap — there's enugh evidence t give it a g and see if it wrks.
      28. What makes us sleepy accrding t paragraph 2?
      A. The breakdwn f adensine.B. The increase in adensine.
      C. The slwed - dwn brain activity.D. The reduced energy cnsumptin.
      29. Why des the authr mentin the 2020 study?

      B. T demnstrate the ideal length f a nap.
      C. T prmte the cncept f caffeine naps.
      D. T cnfirm the benefits f caffeine naps.
      30. What might be a tpic fr fllw - up studies accrding t paragraph 4?

Anyne wh has eaten near the beach has prbably had a seagull (海鸥) dive dwn t claim their lunch at sme pint. Nw, scientists at the University f Exeter have discvered exactly hw t keep thse winged criminals at bay, and the answer might surprise peple wh thught vlume was the nly thing that mattered.
Researchers cnducted a field experiment with 61 wild gulls acrss castal Crnwall. Recrdings f five British men, saying the same phrase — “Stay away! That’s my fd!” — twice: nce shuting with anger and nce speaking nrmally, were unifrmly edited t the same vlume. This ensured that differences in the gulls’ respnses reflected the qualities f the human vice, rather than ludness. Five rbin (知更鸟) sngs served as a cntrl. Once a gull apprached, researchers played ne randmly selected audi track while filming the bird’s reactin frm eight meters away.
The gulls treated bth shuting and speaking as threats cmpared t the harmless rbin sngs. But the real difference appeared in hw the gulls chse t exit. When researchers analyzed the 47 gulls that left befre the ne - minute trial ended, a clear pattern emerged: gulls that heard shuting were five times mre likely t fly away than thse that heard the rbin sngs, while gulls that heard speaking were seven times mre likely t simply walk away.
Flying away frm danger represents a mre urgent escape respnse than walking. Birds typically reserve flight fr serius threats, as flying requires mre energy and puts them at risk during mid - flight. The fact that gulls flew frm shuting but walked frm speaking suggests they perceived shuting as a mre immediate danger, even thugh bth sunds came thrugh the speaker at identical vlumes.
The research fcused n gulls brave enugh t apprach the experimental setup, which may nt represent the behavir f mre guarded individuals. All recrdings used male vices, s whether gulls respnd differently t female vices remains unknwn.
Still, fr anyne trying t prtect their beachside lunch, the research ffers a simple takeaway: It’s nt hw lud yu are, but hw yu speak.
      32. Which aspect f human vices des the experiment fcus n?
      A. The vlume level.B. The special accent.C. The emtinal tne.D. The spken phrase.
      33. What d gulls’ different escape strategies suggest?
      A. They can distinguish threat levels.B. They priritize energy cnservatin.
      C. They find rbin sngs mre attractive.D. They recgnize human language easily.
      34. What is paragraph 5 mainly abut?
      A. The applicatins f the results.B. The purpse f the research.
      C. The prcess f the experiment.D. The limitatins f the study.
      35. What is a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Never Bring Fd t the BeachB. Seagulls Can Tell If Yu're Angry
