And the mre peple stuck with the prgram—learning and practicing the skills — the mre they imprved. “They had less wrry, less disappintment, fewer sleep prblems, less scial islatin and increases in psitive emtins,” she adds.
JAnna Littau frm Alaska, wh signed up fr the curse, shared hw the curse helped her see the beauty in her surrundings. “I fcus n the muntains, and they calm me dwn,” JAnna said. Under the large thick areas f ice in Antarctica (南极洲), there are hundreds f hidden lakes that play an imprtant rle in shaping Antarctica’s cld envirnment. These lakes affect hw glaciers (冰川) mve, which in turn can affect glbal sea levels.
Scientists have recently discvered 85 new subglacial (冰川下的) lakes using sme infrmatin frm the Eurpean Space Agency’s CrySat satellite, which has been bserving the area fr ver ten years. This discvery increases the ttal number f knwn active subglacial lakes in Antarctica t 231.
The study, published in Nature Cmmunicatins, is imprtant because these lakes drain (排水) and refill repeatedly, which makes it difficult t bserve what happens deep under the ice.
Sally Wilsn, a researcher frm the University f Leeds, explained that the challenge is that these lakes are under hundreds f meters f ice. “It is hard t bserve the prcess f filling and draining, as it can take mnths r years. Befre this study, nly 36 cmplete cycles f filling and draining had been bserved. Nw, we have bserved 12 mre cmplete fill-drain events, bringing the ttal t 48,” she said.
Satellites have been imprtant in this discvery. CrySat has been bserving the thickness f plar ice and measuring changes in ice sheet heights ver Greenland and Antarctica fr ver ten years. By checking the infrmatin frm CrySat, scientists culd discern changes in the ice surface caused by the filling and draining f these subglacial lakes.
Understanding these changes brings new hpe fr studying sea level rise. Nw, mdels used t study sea level rise d nt include the effects f subglacial lakes. This new research will help imprve these mdels by ffering mre infrmatin n hw water mves under Antarctica’s ice. “By mapping where and when these lakes are active, we can have a better understanding f future sea level rise in advance,” said Sally.
      12. What des the authr pint ut in the first paragraph?
      A. Antarctica’s thick ice areas are becming smaller.
      B. Glbal warming puts subglacial lakes in danger.
      C. Subglacial lakes affect Antarctica’s envirnment.
      D. Rising sea levels strike the develping cuntries.

      A. Cme up with new ideas abut subglacial lakes.
      B. Describe the pssible prblems subglacial lakes bring.
      C. Raise a reasnable dubt abut the appearance f subglacial lakes.
      D. Present a further explanatin fr the truble f bserving subglacial lakes.
      14. What des the underlined wrd “discern” in paragraph 5 mean?
      A. Chse.B. Discver.C. Create.D. Imagine.
      15. What des Sally want t stress in the last paragraph?
      A. The rle f Antarctica’s ice.B. The develpment f sea levels.
      C. The disadvantages f these mdels.D. The value f the study’s findings.

Beside me was Maya, anther first-time vlunteer with a calm smile. We were assigned (分派) t infrmatin services at the main gate, guiding visitrs and answering questins.
The first hurs passed quickly. Crwds f visitrs pured in frm every directin, filled with excitement. Families asked me where t find the children’s stage; turists wanted directins t the lcatin; and musicians hurried by carrying instrument cases. It was busy but fun — the kind f fun where I hardly nticed time flying by.
