Thugh it may nt seem like it, dirt is alive. Even if they can't be seen easily, sil is full f micrbes (微生物) and bacteria, all breaking dwn rganic matter int nutrients. Where there is life, there is energy - and nw that energy is being transfrmed int electricity, and int light, reprted Fast Cmpany. This type f envirnmentally friendly energy culd be key t finding new, sustainable ways t pwer the wrld.
The idea f using electricity in sil is nt new. In the 19th century, Alexander Bain invented the “Earth battery”, which wrked by placing tw electrdes (电极) in the grund. This sn led t the sil lamp.
Nw, a new generatin f sil - pwer has arisen with the arrival f the micrbial fuel cell (MFC). The MFC uses the metablic (代谢的) activity f micrbes in the sil as a surce f energy. As bacteria feed n rganic matter in sil, they release electrns (电子). Electrdes placed in the sil then catch these electrns creating a stream f electricity which can be used t pwer small electrical devices.
Thugh it cannt currently be used in applicatins that require a large amunt f pwer, sil pwer still has practical uses. It culd be used in rural areas t d things such as charge phnes, r pwer envirnmental sensrs. It culd als be used in emergency situatins when public service facilities have been damaged, pwering lighting and cmmunicatin devices. Sil based electricity culd als be used in agriculture, pwering sensrs that culd track sil health, crp cnditins, r water levels.
Milú Brunell, a graduate f the Savannah Cllege f Art and Design, recently intrduced a beautiful utdr lamp called the Sli Lamp that is whlly pwered by an MFC. Brunell hpes that ne day this technlgy will pwer park lighting r streetlights. Brunel's beautiful lamp and the very existence f MFC and sil lamps prve that surces f clean, renewable and sustainable energy can smetimes be right under yur feet.

Over the last few years, walking 10,000 steps a day has becme a ppular gal amng thse aiming fr a fit lifestyle. But while this target lks cl n fitness trackers and it's certainly smething t talk prudly abut when achieved, there's reprtedly n scientific basis t it. Instead, researchers have lked up the number f steps yu really need t keep yurself healthy. And surprisingly, it's less than previusly thught.
A team f scientists frm Yale University Schl f Medicine recently published a study where they seemed t have fund this sweet spt fr walking. While this ffers a fixed gal, the researchers add that ding mderate physical activity is helpful, regardless f the amunt. "Increasing daily step cunt is assciated with reduced cardivascular death rate in hypertensive (高血压的) individuals, with ptimal (最佳的) benefits bserved belw 8,250 and 9,700 daily steps, respectively," they write. "Mderate levels f physical activity prvide substantial health benefits, highlighting the imprtance f setting realistic and reachable activity gals fr hypertensive ppulatins."
This is in line with the findings frm a study in Jama Internatinal Medicine in 2022. Back then, researchers discvered that the mre yu walk, the lwer yur risk f cancer and ther cnditins. But while thse wh walk 10,000 steps have a lwer risk f cancer than thse wh take 8,000 and a lwer risk than thse wh take 6,000, the benefits plateau after the 10,000 mark—s there's really n reasn t push it, especially if yu struggle t make it that far.
What's mre, walking is nt nly great fr yur bdy, but als fr yur mental health. And while yu're at it, if yu have the chance t d it in nature rather than a gym r an urban setting, the benefits are even higher. S put n yur walking shes, and get ging!
      32. What is the authr's attitude twards walking 10,000 steps a day t keep fit?
      A. Supprtive.B. Dubtful.C. Wrried.D. Unclear.
      33. What d we knw abut hypertensive individuals?
      A. Their death rate is higher than thers.
      B. They need extremely high step cunts.
      C. Mderate walking wrks well fr them.
      D. They shuld avid any physical activity.
      34. What des the underlined wrd "plateau" mean in paragraph 4?
      A. Stay at a steady level.B. Cntinue t increase.
      C. Fade dramatically.D. Achieve the maximum effect.

It’s Nt Just The Prridge(粥)That’s Warm
In Octber 2015, my niece, then aged tw and half, was diagnsed with Acute Lymphblastic Leukaemia. She started n chemtherapy(化疗)straight away at a truly wnderful children’s hspital in the nrth f England.
The dctr tld us that the best things we culd d t ensure her treatment was successful were t make sure she tk her medicine and t keep her weight up as much as pssible. As well as regular chemtherapy, she had t be taken t the hspital whenever her temperature went up, ften fr a few days at a time.
The hspital’s rule was that children must have an accmpanying adult at all times t take care f their nn - medical needs. As the family member wh lived clsest, I smetimes stayed in the hspital with my niece t give my brther and sister - in - law a bit f a break.
This stry happened in February 2016, almst at the end f the first and mst intensive perid f chemtherapy. Her temperature had risen quickly a few nights previusly, s she had been rushed t the hspital. She had sme kind f infectin that was making her very tired and bad - tempered, and she had hardly eaten fr days, even the ward chef’s amazing muffins—they cntained fur kinds f fruits and vegetables and were abslutely delicius—didn’t tempt her.
6 AM in the dawn f a rainy English winter mrning, my niece (wh, by her wn admissin, was “nt a mrning persn”) suddenly wke up and demanded prridge. This was very welcme, as she hadn’t asked fr fd fr days, but als a prblem in that, as she rarely ate prridge, I didn’t have any! She was very fickle(善变的)abut eating at that pint, and I feared that if I didn’t get the prridge quickly, she wuld n lnger want it.
