By day, Rbert Tittertn is a lawyer. In his spare time thugh he ges n stage beside pianist Maria Rasppva — nt as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m nt a trained musician, but I’ve learnt t read music s I can help Maria in her perfrmance.”
Mr Tittertn is chairman f the Omega Ensemble but has been the grup’s fficial page turner fr the past fur years. His jb is t sit beside the pianist and turn the pages f the scre s the musician desn’t have t break the flw f sund by ding it themselves. He said he became just as nervus as thse playing instruments n stage.
“A lt f skills are needed fr the jb. Yu have t make sure yu dn’t turn tw pages at nce and make sure yu find the repeats in the music when yu have t g back t the right spt.” Mr Tittertn explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty f practice. Sme pieces f music can g fr 40 minutes and require up t 50 page turns, including back turns fr repeat passages. Silent nstage cmmunicatin is key, and each pianist has their wn style f “ndding” t indicate a page turn which they need t practise with their page turner.
But like all perfrmances, there are mments when things g wrng. “I was turning the page t get ready fr the next page, but the draft wind frm the turn caused the spare pages t fall ff the stand,” Mr Tittertn said, “Luckily I was able t catch them and put them back.”
Mst page turners are pian students r up-and-cming cncert pianists, althugh Ms Rasppva has nce asked her husband t help her ut n stage.
“My husband is the wrst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every nte, and I have t say: ‘Turn, turn!’ Rbert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”

Mst peple have n idea what t d with their ld drugs. Unused r expired(到期的) medicines lying arund at hme can get int the wrng hands, leading t accidental pisning r drug verdse. When drugs are flushed r sent t landfill, the medicines can pllute ur grundwater, rivers, and streams, threatening human and sea life.
In an effrt t find a slutin fr drugs kept in medicine bxes r waterways, the U.S. Drug Enfrcement Administratin launched its first Natinal Take-Back Day in September 2010. In the drug take-back prgram, the returned drugs are sent t medical waste incineratrs (焚烧炉). Hwever, the prcess f transprting and burning such waste can release green-huse gas emissins that culd be ptentially greater than thse generated if the drugs were pured int landfills.
“But take-back prgrams are preferred as they reduce the risk f drug misuse and the incin-eratin effectively eliminates the entrance f these medicines int ur natin’s waters,” says Tim Carrll, a spkespersn fr the U.S. Envirnmental Prtectin Agency.
Perhaps surprisingly, nt all unused medicines need t be thrwn away. Every year five billin dllars’ wrth f unexpired medicines end up being deserted in the U. S. “We’re wasting a lt f medicines which are already paid fr,“ says Anandi Law, a patient engagement specialist. “Millins f U.S. adults skip r delay getting their prescriptins filled due t high csts. We culd give them t smebdy else wh needs it.”
Nw, at least 40 states have passed legislatin establishing drug dnatin prgrams that allw drug manufacturers, medical and lng-term care facilities, and smetimes individuals t dnate their unused drugs. Fr example, since its start in 2007, lwa’s prgram, SafeNetRx, has served mre than 117,000 patients and redistributed nearly 54-millin-dllar wrth f medicines and supplies. Gergia’s prgram frmally was launched in 2018, and it has already filled prescriptins wrth ver 50 millin dllars.
“All f these effrts are still relatively new,” Carrll says. “We still have a lng way t g until husehlds change their habits.”
      8. What disadvantage f the drug take-back prgram is mentined in paragraph 2?
      A. It csts large amunts f mney.
      B. It increases the greenhuse effect.
      C. It can prduce pisnus chemicals.
      D. It wastes lts f energy t deal with ld drugs.
      9. What is Tim Carrll’s attitude twards the take-back prgram?
      A. Cautius.
      B. Indifferent.
      C. Supprtive.
      D. Disapprving.
      10. What is Anandi Law’s suggestin abut unused and unexpired medicines?
      A. Sending them t landfills.
      B. Selling them at a lw price.
      C. Dnating them t smene in need.
      D. Develping technlgies t recycle them.

      B. The expense f recycling unused drugs.
      C. The significance f health care facilities.
      D. The achievements f drug dnatin prgrams.

A lt f glass tday made frm sand and sdium carbnate(碳酸钠) can be reused r melted dwn and recycled int new items, but it desn’t break dwn in the envirnment and will sit in landfills fr thusands f years. A team f Chinese scientists aimed t deal with this envirnmental cncern by develping an ec-cnscius alternative.
In a study published recently in the jurnal Science Advances, a team at the Chinese Academy f Sciences’ Institute f Prcess Engineering describe hw they engineered bidegradable glass made frm amin acids(氨基酸). That glass wuld have a smaller impact n the envirnment and can break dwn in a few weeks r in several mnths.
In a test, glass beads(玻璃珠) made ut f amin acids were placed under the skin f mice, and the breakdwn f the bead and the skin healing prcess were bserved fr 30 days. A diagram frm the study shws hw the mice’s bdies brke dwn the beads. In that mnth, the glass implant degraded(降解) beneath the skin, the wund site healed, and fur grew back. “Thrughut the experimental perid, n mice shwed any pain-related behavir that may have been caused by the glass implantatin, and nne f them experienced bvius weight lss,” the researchers wrte in their paper.
Althugh amin acids d degrade ver time in the envirnment, this bidegradable glass is nt as durable as traditinal glass, because amin acids can break dwn quickly in heat. In rder t vercme this barrier, the researchers chemically mdified the amin acids using the heating-cling prcedure applied in glass making. This is when materials fr the glass are heated t becme sft and then rapidly cled s as t make the glass tugher.
“It’s imprtant t pint ut that this bidegradable glass is currently in the lab stage, and far frm large-scale cmmercializatin,” emphasized Yan Xuehai, a prfessr invlved in the study, in a press release.
      12. What did the researchers study during the experiment?
      A. The mice’s skin healing prcess.B. The breakdwn f the glass beads.
      C. The medical value f the new glass.D. The glass degradatin with less injury t the mice.
      13. Hw d the researchers imprve the durability f amin acid glass?
      A. Adding mre amin acids.B. Heating the glass and rapidly cling it.
      C. Using special chemical substances.D. Changing the prducing prcess f glass.
      14. What des the underlined wrd “mdified” in Paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Transfrmed.B. Melted.C. Enlarged.D. Prduced.
      15. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
      A. A New Kind f Perfect GlassB. Amin Acids Make Glass Tugher
      C. Large-scale Cmmercial Glass PrductsD. Envirnment-Friendly and Bidegradable Glass
