The last time I played basketball was in mid-March. My teammates and I — I have played basketball every week with the same grup f guys fr ver ten years — laughed abut the crnavirus. Sme made “jke cughs” and there was a general feeling that this pandemic was nt ging t affect us.

Afterwards, I was riding high with the kind f tiredness that nly the mental and physical exertin f basketball prvides. I had nt felt that gd since befre lckdwn. It was a beautiful day. There were mre peple ut than usual, enjying the sunshine and the easing restrictins. It felt like we were n ur way t living a relatively nrmal life.

Generatin Z (Gen Z), peple brn between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, desn’t cmpletely reject the way mdern ecnmies wrk. Instead, they demand that this system be mre respnsible—especially when it cmes t the “wealth cntract (契约)” between individuals and cmpanies. This desire fr respnsibility has a clear reasn: a big gap between what Gen Z was tld life wuld lk like, and what they’re actually ging thrugh.
Saad Amer, funder f an envirnmental cnsulting firm, pints ut that yung peple were taught a “generatinal fable”: spend years and savings n higher educatin, secure a stable career and eventually wn a huse—a rutine nce seen as a reliable path t financial security.
Yet 2024 husing market data tells a different stry: the average age f first-time U. S. hmebuyers reached 38 (the highest n recrd), and 52% f Gen Z renters are struggling with high rent—spending ver 30% f their mnthly incme n rent, a level cnsidered “financially stressful” in husing research.
This difference between expectatin and real-life experience has reshaped what Gen Z wants frm wrk. They dn’t just want “gd pay”—they are eager fr fair wealth sharing; salaries linked t clear, public perfrmance rules, prmtins decided by measurable wrk results, and jb security that desn’t disappear when a cmpany’s prfits drp. They firmly reject “perfrmative benefits” like free snacks r yga classes, seeing these extras as tricks that take their fcus away frm lw salaries and unclear career grwth paths. Charlene Li, an expert wh studies wrkplace trends, ntes: “Gen Z desn’t hate hard wrk—they hate wrking hard fr a system that hides hw wealth is made and wh can benefit frm it.”
Fr cmpanies, if they ignre these demands, they’ll keep lsing yung wrkers. Gen Z sees their jbs as part f wh they are. They wn’t take jbs that make them chse between “earn a living” and “sticking t what they believe is right.” In ther wrds, they dn’t just ask, “Hw much will I get paid?” They want t knw, “Will this jb give me lng-term security? And des the cmpany treat its wrkers fairly, even when it’s making mney?”
      8. What des the “generatinal fable” assume?
      A. Rent burden is a shrt-term prblemB. Higher educatin ensures ecnmic security
C Cmpanies prmise lng-term financial safetyD. Gen Z values higher educatin t secure a jb
      9. Why are the data mentined in paragraph 3?
      A T prve Gen Z struggles t wn a huse
      B. T suggest the U. S. needs stricter rent cntrl.
      C. T demnstrate the generatinal fable fails in reality
      D. T shw Gen Z’s husing csts are high
      10. What des the underlined wrd “perfrmative” in Paragraph 4 prbably mean?
      A. N-valueB. High-cstC. Just-fr-shwD. Wrk-related
      11. What des Gen Z demand frm cmpanies?
      A. High pay and career chicesB. Earning a living and easy tasks
      C. Cmpany prfits and wrker rightsD. Wrkplace fairness and jb security
      D
Hydrgen fuel-cell (氢燃料电池) vehicles aren’t just frm science fictin r unusual experiments. Cars run n hydrgen, like the Tyta Mirai and Hyundai Nex, are already available, and hydrgen fuel-cell technlgy is develping fast with the supprt f billins f dllars in federal research. S why are hydrgen cars almst never seen n U.S. rads tday?
“The answer is simple: cst issues,” Sergey Paltsev, a senir scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative tld Ppular Science. Pliticians and car makers nce supprted the fuel cell — which turns hydrgen’s chemical energy int electricity t pwer an electric mtr — as the future f passenger cars. But cheaper batteries and a lt f electric vehicle charging infrastructure (基础设施) have pushed battery-electric cars far ahead.
T switch widely t hydrgen cars, we need t cut csts and build a large amunt f infrastructure. The Department f Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center shws 55 public hydrgen fueling statin lcatins in the U.S. tday, almst nly in Califrnia, while there are mre than 68,000 active public electric vehicle charging statins acrss the cuntry.
“Nthing will change next year, r prbably even in the next five years, but hydrgen vehicles have better uses ahead,” said Paltsev. In fact, hydrgen fuel-cell vehicles wrk better fr medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks and aviatin (航空). Als, battery-electric vehicles have prblems when it cmes t driving range, charging time r carrying heavy lads.
The fact that hydrgen passenger cars aren’t practical in places like the U.S. nw desn’t mean we shuld just give up n hydrgen fuel-cell technlgy. “We might need it fr many ther reasns in the future,” Paltsev warned. He pinted ut that internatinal plitical issues culd impede the supply f raw materials fr batteries, making hydrgen cars suddenly mre affrdable.
      12. What d we learn abut the develpment f hydrgen fueling statins in the U.S.?
      A. They are evenly distributed acrss all states in the United States.
      B. Their number is far less than that f electric vehicle charging statins.
      C. They will reach 68,000 in the next five years accrding t current trends.
      D. They are mainly built t serve passenger cars as their primary target users.
      13. We can infer frm the passage that battery-electric vehicles ________.
      A. are nt suitable fr medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks
      B. have slved the prblems f driving range and charging time
      C. will be replaced by hydrgen vehicles in five years
      D. require fewer raw materials than hydrgen vehicles
      14. The underlined wrd "impede" in Paragraph 5 prbably means ________.
      A. hideB. delayC. encurageD. blck
      15. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. Hydrgen vehicles have cmpletely lst the cmpetitin with battery-electric cars.
      B. Hydrgen fuel-cell technlgy is useless due t high csts and pr infrastructure.
      C. Hydrgen vehicles face current challenges but have prmising applicatins in the future.
      D. The U.S. gvernment shuld stp investing in hydrgen fuel-cell research.
