A new study shws that the average size f trees in the Amazn rainfrest has been increasing as carbn dixide (CO2) levels have risen, meaning these larger trees play a mre imprtant rle in determining whether the frest can remain a carbn sink that stres CO2.
Until nw, hw frests will react t a changing climate (气候) is an pen questin. Fr example, ne hypthesis (假说) is that larger trees will fall in number because they are mre subject t climate-related events. Understanding this is imprtant fr mdels f the future climate, as frests play a majr rle in taking up huge amunts f CO2 frm the atmsphere, lcking it away t slw glbal (全球的) warming.
Adriane Esquivel-Muelbert, a researcher frm the University f Cambridge, and her cwrkers, have been measuring the size f trees in 188 plts with an average area f 12,000 square metres acrss the Amazn basin fr up t 30 years. During that time, CO2 levels in the atmsphere have risen by nearly a fifth.
“What we’re fllwing is a given area in the frest and the average tree size there is bigger, meaning that the trees can stre mre carbn in that space than they culd in the past,” says Esquivel-Muelbert.
Nrmally, the average size f trees in a healthy frest wuld remain the same, as yung trees take the place f fallen big trees and grw. Hwever, the researchers believe that the increase in CO2 has allwed larger trees t grw mre quickly. This means that large trees nw play a key rle in carbn strage, and lsing them wuld have a marked impact n the frest’s ability t lck up CO2.
“The imprtant finding is that CO2 has been increasing tree grwth, and in many ways that is reassuring, because wd is a significant carbn sink,” says Peter Etchells at Durham University, UK. “Hwever, we need t cntinue studying hw trees react t bth CO2 and ther envirnmental changes t better understand the future f ur frests.”
      12. Hw d rising CO2 levels affect the trees in the Amazn accrding t the new study?
      A. They grw mre rapidly.
      B. They remain the same size.
      C. They see a fall in number.
      D. They cause glbal warming
      13. What might happen if large trees were lst frm the Amazn rainfrest?
      A. Carbn strage wuld rise markedly.
      B. The frest wuld stre less CO2.
      C. Yung trees wuld be badly impacted.
      D. Climate-related events wuld end.
      14. What des the underlined wrd “reassuring” in the last paragraph mean?
      A. Plain.B. Infrmal.
      C. Cnfusing.D. Cmfrting.
      15. What des Peter Etchells suggest?
      A. Applying the result int practice.
      B. Carrying ut further research.
      C. Updating the lcal envirnment.
      D. Planting trees in the Amazn.
