Britain has sme pretty little seaside twns, but the prblem is that peple wn’t leave them alne. It’s Ggle’s fault — fr always prviding links t articles abut them. Within secnds, Lndners are n their way t buy a secnd hme.
They arrive like the middle-class Vikings, but in Range Rvers rather than lngbats. They make it harder fr lcals t rent and, being seasnal visitrs wh leave when summer ends, the shps clse. A vte in Whitby, Yrkshire, shwed peple want t stp new huses being sld t secnd-hmers. Maybe we shuldn’t think f them as Vikings, but as Greeks in wden hrses.
Is this t simplistic? Pretty little twns d have empty shps, but s d ugly big nes. In nn-seaside twns, a butcher’s becmes a betting shp; in seaside twns, it becmes an art gallery. Sea air makes turists want t hang pictures n their walls.
Lndners knw that art likes t fill a vacuum. Tate Mdern, the gallery n the suth bank f the River Thames, is lcated in a frmer pwer statin. It’s s large, yu culd almst fit a pretty little seaside twn inside its entrance hall.
Little twns are als lsing banks. Des that matter, nw that everyne pays by card? It’s nt as if artists carry waterclurs t pay fr shpping. And since they use sunflwer il fr paintings, they at least have smething t ck with if the card machine fails.
The art wrld is full f surprises: buildings that were banks becme art shps, while walls decrated by Banksy — the annymus (匿名的) street artist — becme artwrks themselves. His surprise murals (壁画) are s valuable that they turn building exterirs int galleries.
That way, the inside is free t carry n being an empty shp — unless, f curse, the greengrcer has left a banana inside.
4. What causes Lndners t buy seaside hmes?
A. Articles abut pretty little twns.B. Ggle’s travel recmmendatins.
C. Cheap husing prices there.D. Better weather cnditins.
5. Hw d secnd-hme wners affect lcal shps?
A. They help shps stay pen lnger.B. They pen mre art galleries.
C. They make shps clse seasnally.D. They imprve shp quality.
6. What is the trend in seaside twn shps?
A. Frm betting shps t supermarkets.B. Frm banks t waterclr stres.
C. Frm galleries t butcher’s shps.D. Frm lcal shps t art galleries.
7. What is the authr’s writing style?
A. Frmal and academic.B. Objective and neutral.
C. Emtinal and passinate.D. Humrus and irnic.

A team at the United Kingdm’s Lughbrugh University recently made what is literally the wrld’s smallest vilin. At nly 35 micrmeters lng and 13 micrmeters wide, the “instrument” is thinner than a human hair.
Dn’t expect t hear any small music, hwever. In this case, engineers designed a nanscale (纳米级) image f a vilin instead f a playable instrument. Regardless, the milestne wasn’t intended as a trick — it’s helping experts push the limits when it cmes t future electrnics and cmputer chips (芯片).
Fr decades, electrnics designers and prducers have cnsistently reduced the size f prjects while meantime imprving perfrmance standards. Cmputer chips have dubled their capacity (容量) arund every 1.5 t 2 years, in keeping with a thery knwn as Mre’s Law, which largely hlds up even after 60 years. But at a certain pint in the nt-t-distant future, prducers will simply run ut f physical, upgradable space fr data, which is where quantum (量子) cmputing may cme int play.
Until then, researchers must turn t increasingly advanced techniques t design nanscpic electrnics. One such apprach is nanlithgraphy (纳米光刻技术) — and Lughbrugh University’s Physics department recently bught a new system designed fr just such tasks.
“Our nanlithgraphy system allws us t design experiments that explre materials in different ways — using light, magnetism, r electricity — and bserve their respnses,” experimental physics prfessr Kelly Mrrisn said. “Once we understand hw materials behave, we can start applying that knwledge t develp new technlgies, whether it’s imprving cmputing efficiency r finding new ways t get energy.”
With their test prject cmpleted, researchers have already mved n t mre advanced investigatins. One current prject invlves develping replacements fr magnetic data strage methds, while anther is examining hw heat may help design faster, mre efficient strage and prcessing capabilities.
“Thugh creating the wrld’s smallest vilin may seem like fun and games, a lt f what we’ve learned in the prcess has actually laid the grundwrk fr the research we’re nw undertaking,” said Mrrisn. “But first, we need t understand the fundamental science and this system enables us t d just that.”
8. What is the engineers’ purpse in making the nanscale vilin?
A. T make real music.B. T test a new thery.
C. T advance electrnics.D. T break a wrld recrd.
9. What can we knw abut nanlithgraphy frm the text?
A. It cntributes t making cmputer chips safe.
B. It aims t make playable nanscale instruments.
C. It helps researchers t learn mre abut materials.
D. It is first develped by Lughbrugh fr quantum cmputing.
10. What is Prfessr Mrrisn’s attitude twards the research?
A. Psitive.B. Unclear.C. Dubtful.D. Uncaring.
11. What is the main idea f the text?
A. Mre’s Law and its applicatin.
B. The develpment f quantum cmputing.
C. The advantages f the wrld’s smallest vilin.
D. The research n nanscpic electrnics and its future.

Media literacy (素养) is finally getting sme late-arriving attentin. Whether it’s the increasing awareness f plitical disinfrmatin r the threat f AI, discussins abut media literacy are n the rise. The adptin f media literacy in the classrm, hwever, stagnates.
The driving frce fr prviding kids with media literacy skills ften gets lst in the mral panic ver technlgy and kids. Fear has verrun reasn, and peple can’t decide whether t blame scial media, mbile devices, tech cmpanies, r the Internet. They are cncerned with claims that technlgy and scial media are the causes f teenage mental health issues despite the weak assciatins. In respnse, t many slutins are “strich plicies (鸵鸟政策) ” that want t ban devices and shut dwn scial media but dn’t address mre fundamental issues.
Plicies that set age limits n scial media access and restrict devices during schl t minimize disturbance can be helpful but are incmplete slutins. Scial media didn’t invent bullies (霸凌) r the enrmus effect f peer pressure. Scial media platfrms may be a new battlegrund, but they are nt the surce. Unfrtunately, many current plicies ignre the need t teach kids hw t manage these challenges. There is frighteningly little attentin paid t preparing kids t make gd decisins when they will, unavidably, get nline.
On the bright side, the rapid develpment f AI and increasing attentin t the amunt f misinfrmatin nline have helped nrmalize the acceptance f media literacy as a cre skill. While suggestins t limit inapprpriate device use, increase face-t-face scializatin, and engage in utdr play arc beneficial, they d nt build the cre skills that will keep kids safe ffline and are fundamental t well-being and life success: gd citizenship, self-awareness and self-cntrl. Thse things take teaching, whether yu are nline r utside.
Media literacy is an essential life skill that, nce learned, can be applied t any cntent. While waiting fr public educatin t catch up, parents and educatrs can build media literacy skills at hme with numerus resurces, ranging frm family technlgy cntracts and discussin guides t easy activities that can be dne at hme with kids.
12. What des the underlined wrd “stagnates” in the first paragraph prbably mean?
A. Gets far ahead.B. Falls apart suddenly.
C. Falls well shrt.D. Gets started fficially.
13. What causes peple’s mral panic ver technlgy and kids?
A. Belief in the rapid grwth f new technlgies
B. Cncern ver cutting kids ff frm the Internet
C. Inability t balance the use f scial media and health.
D. Fear f technlgy causing mental health issues in teenagers.
14. What des paragraph 3 f the text fcus n?
A. The surces f peer pressure.B. The benefits f minimizing disturbance.
C. The prblems f current plicies.D. The disadvantages f scial media platfrms
15. Which f the fllwing belngs t media literacy?
A. Reducing scial media expsure.B. Applying critical thinking t media.
C. Increasing face-t-face interactins.D. Recgnizing the dangers f scial media

Lk at issues frm a different angle (角度). Dn’t assume that yu are all lking at the issue frm the same angle. It’s pssible that yu might think yu’re wrking with the same gals in mind, but thers may have different ideas abut hw t achieve them. ____19____ Lking at an issue frm anther pint f view can help yu find slutins that yu might nt have cnsidered.

One side f the barn hused the hrse stalls (马厩), while the ther side was piled with hay bales (干草捆) fr feeding.
One afternn, Callie went int the barn t feed the hrses. As she walked twards the tall stacks f hay, she suddenly stpped. A tiny, weak sund came thrugh the dusty air. Mew... mew...
Her heart jumped. A kitten must be trapped in the hay! Breathing hard, she ran back t find Ben and her father. “Dad! Ben! Cme quick! A kitten is stuck in the hay!” she called urgently. Ben sighed, putting dwn his tls. Her father lked dubtful. “Prbably just the wind, Callie,” he said gently. But they fllwed her t the barn.
They std quietly near the hay stacks, listening. The barn was silent. “Hear anything?” Ben asked. Their father shk his head. “Nthing, sweetheart. Maybe it was just a muse. Dn’t wrry abut it.” Disappinted, Callie watched them leave.
