Befre being fully devted t wildlife phtgraphy, she wrked in jurnalism after getting her master’s degree. In additin t her phtgraphy career, Xu is a well-knwn influencer in wildlife knwledge, using her phts t inspire greater care fr the planet.
The turning pint came during a trip t Antarctica, where Xu witnessed penguin(企鹅) parents fearlessly defending their chicks, which left a deep impressin n her and deepened her lve fr ging deep int nature. Xu then made the life-changing decisin t leave her jb and fllw wildlife phtgraphy full-time. “Nw I’ve traveled acrss all seven cntinents and fur ceans, but what I lve mst is the wildlife within China’s 9.6 millin square kilmeters,” Xu said.
Last year in Yunnan prvince, Xu experienced a hard early mrning climb and hurs f rain and heat t phtgraph the rare green peafwl(孔雀). When the sun came ut in the afternn, a male peafwl’s call rang ut acrss the valley, creating a breathtaking mment.
During a jurney t film a rare butterfly species, Xu met an elderly wildlife prtectr wh viced his cncerns abut the lack f peple devted t prtecting the species. “Shrtly after I published my phts f the butterfly, he shared a picture f vlunteers with me, saying that they hped t jin the prtectin effrts after seeing my images,” Xu said. “Wildlife phtgraphy seems t have transfrmed frm being a pastime fr the elderly. It’s impssible t predict when yu’re ging t die. But if yu’re aiming fr a lng and healthy life, it pays t wrry less abut yur genes(基因) — which yu can’t change anyway — and mre abut yur lifestyle and envirnment. That’s the cnclusin f a new study in Nature Medicine that takes a brad lk at the lngstanding envirnment-vs.-genes debate, and cmes dwn firmly in the envirnment camp.
Researchers analyzed detailed medical data frm ver 490,000 peple in the UK Bibank t study the influence f genetics and mre than 100 envirnmental factrs n the risk f 22 diseases that make up mst f the majr causes f death. “We can measure each participant’s bilgical aging speed — hw much faster r slwer it is than their actual age — and this speed is a very strng predictr f death risk.” says lead authr Austin Argentieri, a research fellw at Massachusetts General Hspital.
Just knwing that age gap, f curse, is nly part f the picture. Equally imprtant is the cause f that gap. T help determine that, the researchers analyzed peple’s many envirnmental and behaviral factrs that cntribute t disease and bilgical age. T cver the genetic side, researchers analyzed peple’s genmes(基因组), lking fr genetic markers related t the 22 key diseases. In additin, they nted which participants had already develped any f thse diseases.
The results were astnishing. Envirnment and lifestyle led t 17% f peple’s disease-related risk f dying, cmpared t just 2% fr genetics. Of the varius envirnmental factrs, smking was the riskiest behavir, linked t 21 diseases; sciecnmic factrs such as husehld incme, neighbrhd, and emplyment situatin were cnnected t 19 diseases; and a lack f physical activity was linked t 17 diseases.
The researchers d nt see the current study t be the end f their wrk. In the future, they recmmend lking mre clsely at multiple factrs, including diet, cntact with viruses such as bird flu as well as ther envirnmental factrs. All f thse are ptentially pwerful but under-studied influences n lifespan(寿命).
28. What can we learn abut bilgical aging speed?
A. It is linked t peple’s death risk.B. It is influenced by peple’s genetics.
C. It is tied t peple’s verall health.D. It is determined by peple’s actual age.
29. Which aspect f the study is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. Purpse.B. Apprach.C. Findings.D. Limitatins.
30. Accrding t the study, which grup is likely t face the greatest disease-related death risk?
A. Tbacc users.B. Lw-incme earners.C. Genetic risk carriers.D. Inactive individuals.
31. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Genes VS. Envirnment: The Lifespan Puzzle

C. The Genetic Blueprint: Answer t A Lng Lifespan
D. Lifestyle and Envirnment: Key Factrs in Lifespan

Say a friend texts yu with tw tickets t a sld-ut cncert the upcming weekend. Naturally, yu pause fr a mment, then type back a single wrd: “Maybe”. It feels like the safest respnse. Yet, unknwingly, with that ne wrd, yu have left yur expectant friend in limb — his wn plans nw stuck, dependent n yur final decisin.
As a matter f fact, peple ften misread what smene extending an invitatin wants t hear. We cnsistently fund that peple verrate an inviter’s likelihd f preferring a “maybe” ver a “n”. Mrever, they fail t realize hw much mre disrespected peple feel when they receive a “maybe” in respnse t their invitatin.
Naturally, we wanted t figure ut why this awkward situatin plays ut. We fund that it’s largely due t smething called “mtivated reasning(动机推理)”. Mtivated reasning ccurs when a persn interprets infrmatin in a ne-sided way t arrive at a cnclusin that matches their wn wishes. In ther wrds, invitees cnvince themselves that inviters want t hear “maybe” instead f “n”, because a “maybe” is better fr the invitee, allwing them t leave their ptins pen. Saying “n” right away leaves them with n chice and can cause FOMO — the fear f missing ut.
Even s, there were certain situatins that made peple mre cmfrtable saying “n” t an invitatin. In ne study, we had invitees put themselves in the shes f the inviters. This made them mre likely t realize that inviters wuld prbably prefer a clear answer. In anther study, we had peple get invited t d smething they didn’t want t d. We fund that mtivated reasning didn’t wrk then.
S next time yu get an invitatin, remember: a quick and clear “n” beats a lng, unclear “maybe”. It’s a win-win: yur hnesty saves the inviter frm limb as well as secures yu future invitatins.
32. What des the underlined wrd “limb” in paragraph 1 prbably mean?
A. Excitement. B. Regret. C. Uncertainty. D. Relief.
33. Why d invitees ften chse “maybe” instead f “n” accrding t the passage?
A. They fail t decide quickly.B. They allw inviters decisin time.
C. They want t shw respect. D. They hpe t keep ptins pen.
34. What is true abut “mtivated reasning”?
A. It leads t a direct refusal.B. It results frm ne-sided thinking.
C. It causes FOMO f invitees. D. It wrks regardless f the situatin.
35. The authr writes the passage mainly t ______.
A. share tips fr a graceful refusalB. shw hw being turned dwn hurts
C. encurage clear replies t invitatinsD. explain why FOMO affects decisins

I’ve been studying attentin fr several years, and this statement — “The quality f yur attentin determines the quality f yur life” — has becme the entire thesis(核心论点) fr my practice f attentineering. 36
Yur attentin is a filter(过滤器). Every secnd yu’re hit with infrmatin, thughts and feelings. What yu fcus n shapes yur behaviur. That’s why tw peple in the same rm, sharing the same events, can have different days: ne ntices prblems while the ther sees pprtunities. It’s the same external reality, but very different internal experience.
I’ve said this befre t: 37 This basic ability — the capacity t direct and maintain yur attentin — is just what enables deep reading, attentive listening, and effective learning.
William James wrte way back in 1890, “My experience is what I agree t attend t.” Science nw shws peple wh can keep fcus reprt higher life satisfactin and achievement.
S, attentin matters — critically. 38 S are yu ut f luck? N! The ther half f the attentineering thesis is that attentin is a skill that can be trained. Every time yu bring yur wandering mind back t the present task, yu’re ding a mental repetitin. Every time yu fight the pull f a distractin, yu’re building strength.
In a wrld where big tech is spending billins f dllars t break dwn yur attentin, develping this skill gives yu an advantage. 39 While thers are cntrlled by their desires, yu can chse yur fcus. While AI is replacing yur clleagues, yu’re ding imprtant creative wrk that yur bss values and can’t be replaced.
40 Hw yu develp it and where yu invest it determines nt just what yu achieve, but wh yu becme and hw yu experience being alive.
Here’s why I believe it’s true.
The bad news is that yurs is terrible.
Everything else becmes backgrund nise.
What yu fcus n becmes the nly reality.
Yur attentin is the mst valuable resurce yu have.
Cncentratin really is the basis f everything meaningful.
While everyne else is drwning in shallw engagement, yu can g deep.
