I was standing with Dad in Grandpa’s yard, and this was ur last visit here, because Grandpa was mving in with us. We wuld have ne week t get his huse cleared ut.
We stepped int the huse, verwhelmed with the huge piles f papers n the table. I vlunteered that I culd take the ld heavy shredder (碎纸机) frm ur huse t deal with them. I culd take it apart and put it back tgether. “What? N!” Dad snapped (厉声说). Then he sighed, and I knew the exact three wrds he was ging t say next. “Michael, be realistic.” Then he lectured abut hw unrealistic my idea was as his eyes traveled wearily (疲倦地) ver the papers piled n the table.
I shrugged (耸肩),walked ver and pked thrugh the piles. “Hey, what’s this?” I pulled ut an ld phtgraph f my dad as a kid. He was standing under the apple tree in the yard, spraying (喷) water frm a water pipe at whever was hlding the camera, with a big, playful smile n his face. He lked like a different persn.
I glanced ver at him. He was examining an ld incme tax statement with a frwn (皱眉). I wndered if smething strange had happened t him. Like maybe the carefree by in the picture and sme bkish by dwn the street had decided t switch lives r smething. If nly there were a time capsule r a memry bx that held mre f Dad’s byhd stuff. Okay, n. That was nt realistic.
“Michael,” Dad said. “Why dn’t yu start cleaning ut the shed (棚屋)?”I happily agreed.
But when I went in, I was shcked. Hw was I suppsed t “clean it ut”? It was filled with junk, a brken lawnmwer here and a millin cans f ld paint there. Suddenly I nticed a little triangle f plastic sticking ut frm the bttm f the paint cans. Curius, I pulled it ut carefully. It was a sandwich bag with a piece f flded paper inside. Maybe it was a treasure map, r the answer t sme lng-unslved murder. I chuckled(轻声地笑)ver my wn unrealistic fancies.
