The Oxfrd English Dictinary (OED) is asking the public t help it add new wrds. Editrs want t find the reginal (地区的) differences in English arund the wrld. They want t increase its recrd f the language.
Last year, the OED, BBC Radi and the Frward Arts Fundatin teamed up t find lcal wrds in the United Kingdm. It resulted in mre than 100 reginal wrds and phrases being added t the dictinary. One was “cuddy wifter”, which means “a left-handed persn”.
Nw, the OED is widening its search t English speakers arund the wrld. Eleanr Maier, an editr at OED, said the reactin has been great. Editrs are listing a number f suggestins t include in the dictinary. These include Hawaii’s “hammajang”, which means “in a disrderly state”. Anther is the wrd fr a swimsuit, “dkers” r “duckers”. It is used in Sctland.
The OED als might include the wrd “frg-drwner”, which Americans might use t describe a dwnpur f rain. Anther pssibility is “brick”. It means “very cld” used by peple in New Jersey and New Yrk City.
