He drpped ut f schl after his first semester.
When Ian played the Chicag music festival Lllapalza in August, the crwd f thusands seemed t knw all the lyrics f “Oh Ok”. But they weren’t just rapping alng t that sng; they were rapping “wrd fr wrd, every sng” t the pint where he had t pause his perfrmance t check what was ging n. “The respnse was shcking,” Ian adds, “I almst cried. Bilgist E. O. Wilsn nce wrte that “ants are the mst warlike f all animals”, nting that fight between ants clnies (群体) exceeded the human battles at Waterl and Gettysburg. But smetimes ant clnies get defeated nt by direct fighting, but by secrets and tricks. And the members f an ant clny can get tricked int murdering their wn precius queen.
“Simply taking ver anther clny is very efficient,” agrees Keiz Takasuka, an eclgist. He explains that scientists have bserved female ants entering a freign clny and directly chking r cutting ff the head f the queen. But Takasuka recently bserved a cuple f ant species in the lab. They learned that female ants frm these species can use a far mre dishnest methd f getting rid f a clny’s queen and stealing her crwn.
First, the female ant needs sme disguise t enter the targeted clny withut being detected as an utsider. Since ants mainly tell friend frm enemy using chemical signals, the female ant can pick up the necessary smell by cming int cntact with a few f the clny’s wrkers. Takasuka’s grup gave the female the pprtunity t d this in the lab.
Then the scientists watched as a disguised female was making her way thrugh a clny twards its queen. Once she reached the queen, the freign ant sprayed (喷) fluid t cver the queen in sme kind f chemical, and withdrew sme time later. “It might be frmic acid,” says Takasuka. “That’s used by sme ants fr defense, r t signal danger. Whatever it was, spraying this chemical nt the queen had a dramatic effect.” Crwds f wrkers wh had been lvingly beying their queen, ready t lay dwn their lives t prtect her, suddenly turned n her, attacking her vilently until she was dead.
In their reprt, the researchers call this the first dcumented case f a parasite (寄生) that “makes the yung kill an therwise necessary mther”. After the killing f the mther, the clny’s ants accepted the invading female as their new queen and began t serve her, prtecting her and helping t raise her children.
      28. What des the first paragraph intend t say?
      A. Ants are the mst warlike animals.
      B. Sme ants attack freign queens directly.
      C. Ant battles are larger than sme human battles.
      D. Ant wrkers can be cheated int killing their queen.
      29. What des the underlined wrd “this” in paragraph 3 refer t?
      A. Stealing the queen’s psitin.B. Picking up the necessary smell.
      C. Interacting with freign wrkers.D. Getting rid f the clny’s queen.
      30. What happened right after the ant sprayed the queen?
      A. The freign ant withdrew immediately.B. Wrkers accepted the freign ant as a queen.
      C. Wrkers turned against their wn queen.D. The sprayed fluid killed the queen directly.
      31. What des the term “parasite” imply abut the freign ant?
      A. It tricks the clny int raising her yung.B. It serves the clny peacefully.
      C. It awaits the wrkers’ reactin.D. It feeds n the hst clny.

An electrnic retinal implant (视网膜植入) has imprved visin in peple with age-related macular degeneratin(AMD). Scientists have used an eye implant t imprve the visin f dzens f peple left functinally blind by AMD. The implant, which measures 2 millimetres by 2 millimetres, and is just 30 micrmetres thick, is surgically put beneath the retina t replace the light-sensitive cells that have been lst t the disease.
The implant, termed PRIMA, is wireless, unlike previus retinal devices. And being phtvltaic (光电的), the light particles that activate it als prvide the energy surce fr generating its electrical utput. It is used in cmbinatin with glasses that cntain a camera that captures images and changes them int patterns f invisible light that is sent t the retinal implant. The system, which allws users t zm in and ut n target bjects, and adjust cntrast and brightness, des take mnths f intensive training t use best.
In the current study, 38 individuals were treated at 17 clinical sites acrss 5 Eurpean cuntries, and 32 f the participants were tested a year after implantatin. 26 f them had a clinically meaningful imprvement in their visin, which, n average, meant being able t see tw lines further dwn a standard eye test chart f letters. Overall, mst participants’ visin came clse t the reslutin (分辨率) that PRIMA can achieve.
Hwever, a questinnaire abut users’ daily quality f life revealed n significant verall imprvements. They said the results wuld be mre cnvincing if the imprvement had been shwn by cmparing it with a randm treatment grup. And users’ reading is “nt fast, smth reading”. The visin prvided is als black and white, nt clur.
Trial leader Frank Hlz acknwledges the current system has limitatins, and he expects future implants t be mre effective. “With this first majr breakthrugh, it’s a starting pint fr further imprvement,” he says, “And where this dead retina was a cmplete blind spt, visin was restred. Patients culd read letters and wrds, and they culd functin in their daily life.”
      32. What can be knwn abut PRIMA accrding t the text?
      A. It requires mdest training fr best results.
      B. It allws glasses t send nrmal images t it.
      C. It is bth activated and pwered by light particles.
      D. It can restre nrmal visin by replacing lst cells.
      33. What can be cncluded frm the study?
      A. The implant prved instantly effective n the patients.
      B. The 38 participants shwed imprved visin a year later.
      C. The invlved patients culd see tw lines n the eye chart.
      D. Mst patients’ visin reached the best level with the device.
      34. Which f the fllwing PRIMA limitatins is nt clearly mentined?
      A. Black-and-white visin.B. Frequent eye discmfrt.
      C. Slw and difficult reading.D. Uncnvincing visin imprvement.
      35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. PRIMA: Its Prgress and LimitatinsB. PRIMA: Hw It Imprves Visin
C PRIMA: A Training fr AMD BlindnessD. PRIMA: A New Life fr AMD Patients
