Hw ld are yur rgans? The answer might nt match yur chrnlgical (按时间顺序的) age—— and new research finds that an rgan's bilgical age might predict a persn's risk f diseases.
The research analyzed data frm Whitehall Ⅱ, a British study that has fllwed ver 10,000 British adults fr ver 35 years. Between 1997 and 1999, the Whitehall Ⅱ study tk bld samples frm participants aged 45 t 69.
The current study analyzed thse bld samples as well as fllw-up data fr 6,235 Whitehall Ⅱparticipants, by then aged 65 t 89. The researchers used the analysis t help measure the gap between a persn's age and the bilgical age f nine f their bdy parts: heart, bld vessels, liver, immune system, pancreas, kidneys, lungs, intestines and brain. Then they lked at fllw-up data that shwed the kinds f diseases participants develped as they aged ver the next tw decades.
The rgans aged at different rates in different peple, the researchers write—— and thse with“fast-ining” rgans had an increased risk f 30 f the 45 age-related diseases studied.
Sme f the assciatins linked the faster aging rgan t diseases in that rgan; fr example, thse with accelerated (加快的) lung aging were likelier t develp respiratry (呼吸的) diseases. But in ther cases, the link was nt as direct. Faster aging f the kidneys, in particular, was linked t diseases f the kidneys and ther rgans, such as the liver and pancreas, and accelerated aging f multiple rgans in the bdy increased kidney disease risk. Surprisingly, dementia (痴呆) was nt best predicted by accelerated brain aging, but rather by the immune system's bilgical age.
The researchers say the study shws the prmise f an rgan-specific bld test, which is simpler than past methds. In a news release, lead authr Mika Kivimaki says such tests culd ne day“advise whether a persn needs t take better care f a particular rgan, and ptentially prvide an early- warning signal that they may be at risk f a particular disease.”
28. What d yu knw abut the Whitehall Ⅱ study?
A. The invlved rgans were healthy.B. The participants were lng- lived.
C. The researching prcess was lengthy.D. The result was nt prved already.
29. What has the new research revealed?
A. Organs fail naturally but differently as peple age.
B. Faster rgan aging predicts increased disease risks.
C. Healthy rgans are a guarantee f ne's well- being.
D. Organ aging is the leading cause f its functin lss.
30. What is the surprising utcme regarding dementia?
A. It is unavidable as ne ages.B. Relevant predictins are quite accurate.
C. Science prmises a cure fr it.D. Faster brain aging isn't its direct cause.
31. In which way are the findings beneficial?
A. They can help prevent rgan disease.B. Any particular disease can be detected.
C. Organ- specific bld tests are simple.D. Health f rgans wuld be guaranteed.

Fr sme readers, a dictinary pens up a wrld.Dictinaries cntain multiple pleasures, such as settling wrd- game wars by turning actual pages. Fr the rest, a dictinary is either utdated r strictly nline. In 2012, EncyclpaediaBritannica stpped printing new editins, ging digital- nly.

When I was a child, I lved dictinaries, and s did every sensible parent in Calcutta. If yur child was literate, ne f the 20 vlumes f the Oxfrd English Dictinary r an illustrated Cllins was the surest way t keep them happily ccupied, setting them ff n猎ens fr lst r frgtten wrds.
Fatsis sees dictinary- making as“a human endeavr (努力) stretching back t the third millenniumBCE”. Frm the Akkadians t Sanskrit schlars, what dictinary makers hped t d went far beynd the already tricky task f writing definitins: their jb was t explain and track“the endless shifts in language”
Change is inevitable, thugh Fatsis als asks what we lse in the name f cnvenience. He writes,“ the jb f the dictinary was firmly established... By the time I finished this bk, it wasn't clear hw much lnger flesh- and- bld lexicgraphers (词典编纂者) wuld be needed t dcument the march f theEnglish language. Between traditinal search engines and AI- enhanced search thrugh LLMs (large language mdels), the way we lk up wrds, and find meaning in language itself, has changed.”
We can't claim that humanity still needs physical dictinaries. Like encyclpedias and atlases, the best f them have lng mved nline. Indeed, the starting pints f mst search engines were the encyclpedias and dictinaries made by experts. But I plan t hld n t my belved, dg- eared physical dictinaries——— such priceless time capsules, the last paradise s f freedm frm the endless serlling f digital cntent.
32. What has reduced peple's reliance n physical dictinaries?
A. The decline f the print media.B. The cnvenience f nline lkup.
C. Peple's indifference t accuracy.D. Publishers' insistence n ging digital.
33. What can we infer abut the real- life lexicgraphers?
A. Their wrklad will duble.B. They will remain in demand.
C. Their existence is threatened.D. They need t upgrade their skills.
34. Why des the authr stick t physical dictinaries?
A. They bst lng- term memry.B. They last lnger than digital files.
C. They ffer an escape frm screens.D. They give mre authritative definitins.
35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. A Wrd in Favr f DictinariesB. My Lve fr Lking up Wrds
C. A Best- seller n the Theme f ChangeD. Human Endeavrs in Dictinary- making

Are Life Skills Classes Necessary?
I firmly believe life skills classes are necessary fr students.
Firstly, these classes fill a gap in traditinal educatin. Subjects like budgeting, cking, and basic hme repairs are rarely taught in regular lessns, but they are essential fr independent living. Fr example, learning t manage mney helps us avid financial trubles later. Secndly, life skills bst cnfidence. Cmpleting practical tasks, such as fixing a brken lamp, helps develp prblem-slving skills, making us feel capable f handling real-life challenges.
In shrt, life skills classes prepare us fr the future beynd exams. Schls shuld definitely include them in the curriculum.
