Language is a living thing, and s is the dictinary. There wn’t be a day when we mark it “cmplete” after adding the last wrd. Recently, ppular nline wrds “nb” and “tangping” are amng thusands f new wrds being added t the Cambridge Dictinary.
Chsing wrds fr the dictinary is nt an easy jb. It is the wrk f lexicgraphers (词典编纂者), wh d mre than just add and explain wrds. They update ld definitins and als write new nes fr wrds that have develped new meanings. T find new wrds entering the language, lexicgraphers read widely, lking at majr publicatins and checking what peple are searching fr nline.
“When a wrd mves ut f qutatin marks (引号), that’s anther sign that enugh peple knw what this is. It has a definitin that peple recgnize, and we want t put it in the dictinary,” Wendalyn Nichls frm Cambridge Dictinary tld The New Yrk Times. This means lexicgraphers lk at whether a wrd is widely used and has a meaning that mst peple agree n. They must als decide whether the wrd is likely t stay in use fr a lng time.
Thugh wrds like “nb” and “tangping” are nw part f daily cnversatin, sme peple may see them as negative. The wrd “nb”, fr example, describes a persn wh is new t and unskilled at a particular activity, especially a game. It is ften used in a mcking way. “Tangping”, which literally means “lying flat,” describes the attitude f rejecting scietal pressure and ambitin. “As lexicgraphers, ur jb is t bserve and recrd, and it is nt t pass judgment n the terms,” said Nichls. She added that negative wrds are marked in the dictinary s learners can find them and knw t be careful.
In the past, a new wrd had t be used fr tw r three years befre being added t a print dictinary. But the internet age has changed this. Nw, new wrds can mve frm scial media t daily talk much mre quickly. Their place in the dictinary shws hw the internet influences wider culture and language, accrding t The New Yrk Times.
28. What d lexicgraphers mainly d t find new wrds?
A. Read bestsellers and their bk reviews.
B. Recrd daily cnversatins in public places.
C. Review majr publicatins and nline searches.
D. Cllect wrds frm trending scial media psts.
29. Accrding t Nichls, what des it suggest when a wrd mves ut f qutatin marks?
A. It is widely recgnized.B. It is n lnger imprtant.
C. It will stay in use fr a lng time.D. It needs its definitin t be updated.
30. Hw has the internet changed dictinary updates?
A. By speeding up the additin f new wrds.
B. By making lexicgraphers fcus mre nline.
C. By increasing the standard fr wrd selectin.
D. By letting the wrk f lexicgraphers be easier.
31. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. Hw new wrds like “nb” are created.
B. Hw lexicgraphers d their difficult jb.
C. Hw the internet harms mdern language.
D. Hw dictinaries adapt t a changing language.

Landslides f ash, gas and rck that flw ut dwnhill during vlcanic eruptins may be even mre dangerus than scientists had realized.
Labratry and field measurements shw pulses f high pressure frm within these slides, knwn as pyrclastic (火山碎屑的) flws. Thse pressures can be far strnger, and mre destructive, than disaster evaluatins typically assume. “It’s nt a small difference,” says Cert Lube, a vlcanlgist at Massey University in Palmerstn Nrth, New Zealand. Cnventinal disaster evaluatins might suggest a certain flw will nly burst windws, but he says, “When actually, the pressures are s strng, they knck dwn the walls f the building.”
Pyrclastic flws are the deadliest vlcanic disaster, in part because f the pressures they cause. Due t their vilent nature, researchers ften have t evaluate average pressures in the flws using cmputer simulatins (模拟) based n measurements f gelgic depsits left by past flws.
At Massey University in Palmerstn Nrth, New Zealand, researchers freed mixtures f ht rck, ash and gas dwn a channel t cpy vlcanic landslides knwn as pyrclastic flws. These pyrclastic flws have an inner rhythm (节奏) that makes them especially destructive. T directly study the inner wrkings f these frces f nature, Lube and clleagues reprduced smaller versins f the flws in experiments, measuring the destructive pwer. That let the team calculate the pressures inside the flws. The researchers als analyzed the first measurements f pressures in natural flws, cllected in 2019, when pyrclastic flws burst frm the Whakaari vlcan and swallwed a set f sensrs.
T the researchers’ surprise, pressures in the flws shk rhythmically. These pressure pulses wuld successively damage barriers like blws frm an electric drill, Lube says. The pulses smetimes smashed mre than three times as hard as the average pressure evaluates typically suggested by cnventinal simulatins.
32. Why d researchers use cmputers t simulate pyrclastic flws?
A. T find ut their inner rhythm.B. T evaluate their vilent nature.
C. T figure ut their average pressures.D. T cpy the scene f vlcanic landslides.
33. What des the furth paragraph fcus n?
A. Hw t prepare simulatin experiment.
B. Hw t carry ut the simulatin experiment.
C. Why t cnduct the simulatin experiment.
D. Why t measure the inner rhythm f pyrclastic flws.
34. What des the underlined wrd “smashed” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Crashed.B. Bmbed.C. Cnflicted.D. Increased.
35. What’s the mst suitable title fr the text?
A. A Well-knwn LandslideB. The Deadliest Vlcanic Disaster
C. Mre Destructive Pyrclastic FlwsD. A Pyrclastic Flws Simulatin Experiment
