Sme Christmas traditins are pretty standard in mainstream (主流) American culture: put up the tree, string up the lights, visit grandma, and s n.
Then there’s the ne my Clmbian family des every year: the Nvena de Aguinalds. We pray (祈祷) fr nine days withut a stp, and this Nvena cunts dwn the nine days befre Christmas. Mst Americans have never heard f it, but in Clmbia, it’s a big deal.
Like all gd traditins, especially arund the hlidays, this traditin is abut cmmunity and getting tgether with friends and family. My family immigrated (移民) frm Clmbia when I was just tw mnths ld. Every year, we gather with a grup f
Clmbian friends fr as many f the nine nights as we can.
There are three parts t the Nvena de Aguinalds. The first is the reading: each kid takes turns t read a bk. Next cmes the gzs, which means “The Jys”. That’s where the music cmes in, and everyne gets an instrument, a maraca, a drum, a tin can — whatever yu can use t make a sund. And then, the villancics — Spanish Christmas carls (颂歌) cme.
I’ve lived my whle life in the US. There’s nt a lt f Clmbian culture that we still hang nt. Why d we still carry n
with the traditin f celebrating the Nvenas, then?
When I asked my parents the ther day, the answer was that immigrants didn’t belng anywhere — nt where yu were, nr where yu were frm. S my parents helped create a space where we did. Even if the Nvenas were nthing like what we might have celebrated if we’d stayed in Clmbia, the Nvenas became the heart f ur cmmunity.
But ur Nvenas are starting t feel a little mre breakable. It’s getting harder and harder fr everyne t get tgether each year. Last year, I was studying abrad in Italy and culdn’t make it t any gathering; my brther went ff t cllege and had exams late int December; my sister just mved t a new city, and my parents have taken up jbs in different cuntries.

Lack f mney.B. Their separate busy life.
C. American laws.D. Friends’ cmplaints.
What’s the best title fr the text?
Grwing UpB. Clrful Culture
C. Explring American Christmas TraditinsD. Clmbian Family’s Nvena in the US

If I have t chse ne, I want t select the crwned brnze statue with a snake’s bdy,” said Ran Hnglin, directr f the Sanxingdui Cultural Relics and Archelgy Research Institute. He nted that the relics prve the diversity f Chinese culture and ffer anther pwerful example f Chinese civilizatin’s unity in diversity, because the brnze statue’s shape melted cultural factrs f different areas in China during ancient times.
Researchers used Carbn-14 dating t cnfirm that nearly 200 samples unearthed in different pits were made frm 1131 BC t 1012 BC, s they cncluded that in additin t the fifth and sixth pits appearing later, the rest f the pits shuld have been built in the late Shang dynasty, dating frm 3,000 t 3,200 years ag. The discvery has slved an argument ver the age f sacrificial pits fund in the past three decades.

In which aspect did archaelgists disagree abut the pits befre the explratin?
The time f building them.
The time f finding them.
The way f studying them.
The rder f numbering them.
What is the purpse f this text?
T explain the meaning f cultural relics.
T remember an archelgist in Sanxingdui.
T intrduce the new discveries in Sanxingdui.
T recmmend Sanxingdui as a turist destinatin.

It’s really true what peple say abut English pliteness: it’s everywhere. When passing thrugh a crwd in a narrw place, peple say “srry”. When getting ff a bus, English passengers say “thank yu” t the driver. In Germany, peple wuld never
dream f ding these things. After all, squeezing past thers is smetimes unavidable, and the bus driver is nly ding his jb. I used t think the same way, withut questining it, until I started traveling t the British Isles and came t appreciate sme mre plite ways f cmmunicating with peple, and here are sme mre plite ways f interacting with peple in UK.
Peple thank each ther everywhere in England, all the time. When peple buy smething in a shp, custmer and shp assistant in mst cases thank each ther twice r mre. In Germany, it wuld be surprising t hear mre than ne thank-yu in such a cnversatin. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the rm. English emplyers thank their emplyees fr ding their jbs, which is different frm Germans, wh wuld nrmally think that paying their wrkers mney is already enugh.
Anther thing I bserved during my stay was that English peple rarely criticize (批评) thers. Even when I was wrking
and mistakes were pinted ut t me, my emplyers repeated several times but nne f their explanatins were intended as sclding me. It has been my impressin that by aviding sclding, English peple are making an effrt t make thers feel cmfrtable. This als is shwed in ther ways. British men still pen drs fr wmen, and British men are mre likely t treat wmen t a meal than German men. Hwever, I d need t pint ut here that this applies t English men a bit mre than it wuld t Scttish men!
What is the authr’s feeling f English pliteness?
He thinks highly f it.B. He thinks little f it.
C. He thinks it unnecessary.D. He thinks it ges t far.
Why des the authr mentin Germans in paragraph 2?
T catch readers’ attentin.B. T stress English pliteness.
C. T describe German culture.D. T give tips n hw t be plite.
Which wrd can be used t describe English way f pinting ut mistakes?
A. Rude.B. Direct.C. Acceptable.D. Creative.
What methd is mainly used t develp the text?
Telling stries.B. Giving reasns.
C. Referring t theries.D. Making cmparisns.
