Nrtn built his wn career in a different field, becming ne f his generatin’s mst respected actrs. When Nrtn first became famus, he cncluded that he wasn’t interested in rdinary celebrity ambassadr wrk. “I am nt interested in being sme weak sauce kind f spkespersn,” he says. “It’s nt that I dn’t believe thse things are imprtant, but that held n nurishment fr me.”
What des nurish Nrtn is his wrk with a Kenya-based rganizatin called the Maasai Wilderness Cnservatin Trust, which helps the Maasai peple t make a living frm their land thrugh innvative means. One prject that Nrtn is particularly prud f channels prfits frm the sale f carbn ffsets (碳补偿) t lcal Maasai cmmunities wh use that mney t supprt health, educatin, and cnservatin initiatives.
One challenge that cncerns Nrtn wuld be familiar t his father and grandfather: raising funds. This led Nrtn t a realizatin. “We can’t have the cnservatin mvement depend nly n dnr-funded charity,” he says, “It nt nly can’t scale; it’s fundamentally unstable.”
A new mdel is needed. Nrtn and his partners argue that turist dllars being spent in fragile places ught t remain in-cuntry — r better yet, in-cmmunity. Nrtn and his team have started a cmpany called Cnservatin Equity that will invest in turism in critical places and will reinvest its prfits lcally, instead f paying distant sharehlders.
Nrtn is ptimistic abut the mdel’s prspects, “I think what we are ding has n previus example t fllw. The needs f peple are nt ging t take a lwer pririty t the spiritual value f nature. If prtecting and restring nature can’t prduce a strnger and mre reliable ecnmy, the effrt will fail.”

“Individuals f all ages wh have empathy (共情) understand that smetimes telling little white lies can prtect ther peple frm getting hurt,” says Barbara Greenberg, a clinical psychlgist in Cnnecticut. “Mst peple that I have cme acrss tell these little white lies because they understand that 100 percent hnesty all the time is nt beneficial.” A white lie, she explains, spares peple frm unnecessary hurt.
At the same time, Dr. Julia Breur, a marriage and family therapist in Flrida, emphasizes the imprtance f paying attentin t the way we respnd t smene. The fact is that nt telling the truth can result in smething unpleasant n yu; it’s nt just abut the persn the white lie is being tld t. Fr example, she says smene wh always tells thers that “all is gd” when it cmes t a sick parent in an effrt t avid discussins abut hw serius their health issue really is, can eventually face stressful experiences. When that parent eventually passes away, the persn wh always gave an “all is gd” respnse ends up emtinally brken.
Smetimes, telling white lies ften depends n the situatin, Dr. Breur says. Fr example, cnsider a wman wh has nt seen her mther fr several mnths. The daughter has gained nticeable weight, yet the mther respnds by excitedly declaring that she lks great. “I emphasize during psychtherapy sessins with my patients that cntext helps define meaning,” Dr. Breur says. “S when we lk at the cntext f a mther saying yu lk great when she clearly sees that her daughter has gained weight, it can be acceptable. It reflects the intentin f the white lie which is kindness, prtectin and uncnditinal lve. Otherwise, white lies — especially when tld t avid persnal accuntability — can start a cycle f mistrust between peple, ultimately cmprmising integrity,” she adds.
Therefre, it’s imprtant t ask urselves when it is and isn’t apprpriate t deliver the hnest truth, and when it’s best t step back and ffer a mre delicate respnse. Mre ften than nt, it’s abut finding a balance between the tw.
      8. What can be learned abut white lies accrding t Barbara Greenberg?
      A. They are shrt-lived.B. They are unidentifiable.
      C. They are truble-making.D. They are cmmn.
      9. What message des Dr. Breur deliver in paragraph 2?

      B. We must respnd t ur family members truthfully.
      C. It’s wrng t tell white lies t a seriusly ill parent.
      D. The “all is gd” respnse is effective in dealing with patients.
      10. Which f the fllwing white lies may Dr. Breur supprt?
      A. A student claims his hmewrk was left at hme.
      B. An emplyee blames traffic jam fr being late.

      D. A nurse says she has t wrk vertime s as t decline an invitatin.

      A. East r West, White Lies Are the BestB. Think Twice Befre Telling White Lies
      C. White Lies Signify Uncnditinal LveD. Tell White Lies t Shw Yur Sympathy
Researchers frm the University f Bath recently develped a new tuch screen that's capable f changing its shape and hardness when users apply varius levels f frce t it. The screen, which they refer t as “DefrmIO”, uses air-pwered systems and sensrs t detect levels f pressure applied by a finger and then cllapse (凹陷) arund it. The researchers say it culd add a new input layer (输入层) t mbile devices that culd be used fr a wide variety f tasks, frm lking thrugh digital maps t playing games and “feeling” the hardness f prducts virtually.
Thugh DefrmIO, which is 3 mm thick with a 140 mm² surface layer, isn't the first changeable screen, it can apply several frce inputs n varius parts f the screen at the same time, which means users can experience a feeling f cntinuus tactile (触觉的) respnse while mving their finger acrss the screen. “In ther wrds, DefrmIO allws users t feel a richer, mre tactile and natural respnse as they press the surface,” lead authr James Nash said.
If the new screens are ever indeed applied t widespread cnsumer mbile devices, they culd change the way users interface with apps and services used n a daily basis. The researchers imagine a situatin where a future traveler equipped with DefrmIO uses it t mve thrugh sectins f the digital map. In this example, the traveler culd quickly switch between the rad view sectin f a map and satellite view by simply applying mre and less pressure n the screen.
It's uncertain if everyday phne users will find the new screen attractive enugh t give up their glass tuch screens. Less advanced mbile designs like fldable screens, which have already existed fr years, are still struggling t gain wide use utside f a limited audience. It’s pssible that screens like DefrmIO culd end up the same way. “We hpe that in 10 t 20 years’ time, the cncepts it presents culd be in yur mbile phne. Fr nw, we' re explring the applicatins it might be best suited t. ” Nash said.
      12. What can be learned abut DefrmIO?
      A. It's a prtective layer fr screens.B. It's a screen with tactile flexibility.
      C. It perfrms different tasks tgether.D. It senses changes in users' identity.
      13. What makes DefrmIO stand ut amng ther similar designs?
      A. Its adaptable appearance.B. Its better-quality sensrs.
      C. Its small size and light weight.D. Its mre realistic sense f tuch.
      14. What des the underlined phrase “interface with” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Mix up.B. Assist with.C. Cnnect with.D. Imprve n.
      15. What challenge might DefrmIO face?
      A. Lw custmer interest.B. Technical design limitatins.
      C. Insufficient develpment funds.D. Strng cmpetitin within the industry.
