When I was in primary schl, my favrite place was the library. Smething changed after I entered high schl, thugh. All f a sudden, reading was a task that I culd nt avid fast enugh. The bks that I read in schl bred me, and even if I enjyed the bks themselves, the repetitive, challenging hmewrk we cmpleted based n thse bks made me hate reading as a whle.
It actually wasn’t until recently that I rediscvered my lve fr reading. Hw, yu may ask? Audibks (有声书). Last summer, I spent every mrning taking lng walks while listening t them, and I wuld find myself lst in the stries fr hurs. And nw I'm rediscvering my passin fr reading. I feel that pull again. That curisity.
My lve stry with reading may have had a happy ending, but nt everyne is as lucky as me. What went wrng?
What tends t happen is that students lse their lve fr reading because f the way many schls try t encurage children t read. Fr example, when a child is tld t read fr twenty minutes every night, they tend t read fr the required amunt f time and then check the task ff n their list. In this way, reading has suddenly becme a bring task instead f an exciting experience.
Making sure that kids keep their passin fr reading will require us t rethink hw we teach reading in schls and hw we intrduce bks t children utside f schl as well. There needs t be less f a fcus n meeting reading requirements and mre f a fcus n creating an envirnment in which students are actually excited t read.
