      19.The Deslenatr: prducing clean water
A Travelling arund Thailand in the 1990s, William Janssen was impressed with the basic rftp slar heating systems that were n many hmes, where energy frm the sun was absrbed by a plate and then used t heat water fr dmestic use. Tw decades later, Janssen develped that basic idea he saw in Sutheast Asia int a prtable device that uses the pwer frm the sun t purify water.
B The Deslenatr perates as a mbile desalinatin unit that can take water frm different places, such as the sea, rivers, brehles and rain, and purify it fr human cnsumptin. It is particularly valuable in regins where natural grundwater reserves have been plluted, r where seawater is the nly water surce available.
Janssen saw that there was a need fr a sustainable way t clean water in bth the develping and the develped cuntries when he mved t the United Arab Emirates and saw large-scale water prcessing. “I was cnfrnted with the enrmus carbn ftprint that the Gulf natins have because f all f the desalinatin that they d,” he says.
C The Deslenatr can prduce 15 litres f drinking water per day, enugh t sustain a family fr cking and drinking. Its main selling pint is that unlike standard desalinatin techniques, it desn’t require a generated pwer supply: just sunlight. It measures 120 cm by 90 cm, and is easy t transprt, thanks t its tw wheels. Water enters thrugh a pipe, and flws as a thin film between a sheet f duble glazing and the surface f a slar panel, where it is heated by the sun. The warm water flws int a small biler (heated by a slar-pwered battery) where it is cnverted t steam.
When the steam cls, it becmes distilled water. The device has a very simple filter t trap particles, and this can easily be shaken t remve them. There are tw tubes fr liquid cming ut: ne fr the waste—salt frm seawater, fluride, etc., and anther fr the distilled water. The perfrmance f the unit is shwn n an LCD screen and transmitted t the cmpany which prvides servicing when necessary.
D A recent analysis fund that at least tw-thirds f the wrld’s ppulatin lives with severe water scarcity fr at least a mnth every year. Janssen says that by 2030 half f the wrld’s ppulatin will be living with water stress—where the demand exceeds the supply ver a certain perid f time. “It is really imprtant that a sustainable slutin is brught t the market that is able t help these peple,” he says. “Many cuntries dn’t have the mney fr desalinatin plants, which are very expensive t build. They dn’t have the mney t perate them, they are very maintenance intensive, and they dn’t have the mney t buy the diesel t run the desalinatin plants, s it is a really bad situatin.”
E The device is aimed at a wide variety f users—frm hmewners in the develping wrld wh d nt have a cnstant supply f water t peple living ff the grid in rural parts f the US. The first cmmercial versins f the Deslenatr are expected t be in peratin in India early next year, after field tests are carried ut. The market fr the self-sufficient devices in develping cuntries is twfld—thse wh cannt affrd the mney fr the device utright and pay thrugh micrfinance, and middle-incme hmes that can lease their wn equipment. “Peple in India dn’t pay fr a fridge utright; they pay fr it ver six mnths. They wuld put the Deslenatr n their rf and hk it up t their municipal supply and they wuld get very reliable drinking water n a daily basis,” Janssen says. In the develped wrld, it is aimed at niche markets where tap water is unavailable—fr camping, n bats, r fr the military, fr instance.
F Prices will vary accrding t where it is bught. In the develping wrld, the price will depend n what deal aid rganisatins can negtiate. In develped cuntries, it is likely t cme in at $1,000 (£685) a unit, said Janssen. “We are a venture with a scial missin. We are aware that the prduct we have envisined is mainly finding applicatin in the develping wrld and humanitarian sectr and that this is the way we will prceed. We d realise, thugh, that t be a viable cmpany there is a bttm line t keep in mind,” he says.
G The cmpany itself is based at Imperial Cllege Lndn, althugh Janssen, its chief executive, still lives in the UAE. It has raised £340,000 in funding s far. Within tw years, he says, the cmpany aims t be selling 1,000 units a mnth, mainly in the humanitarian field. They are expected t be sld in areas such as Australia, nrthern Chile, Peru, Texas and Califrnia.
