sites in Paris. Nne f us spke much French but we lved the city.
We had taken the subway all ver the city and were cngratulating urselves n ur mastering what is hnestly an excellent subway design that is pretty easy t fllw. We decided t visit Versailles by train. We chatted happily alng the way until my father realized we were far int the French cuntryside and n ne arund spke English.
We reached the end f the line and felt afraid when everyne finally left the train. An ld man and his grandchild nticed us and came t help. He spke n English, s in brken French we tried t explain. When he finally understd, this great man settled his grandsn and shwed us t the crrect train and then barded with us.
Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer (转乘) and he didn’t want us t miss it. This
kind man rde a train fr an hur and a half ut f his way t make sure that three Americans gt where they wanted t be. He refused t let us pay fr his ticket. He did it all with a gentle smile and patted ur hands gently at the stp. Then in his quiet way, he barded the train t return the way he had cme.
What impressed me mst was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Sme Americans think the French are rude fr sme reasn, but I always try t persuade them t change their minds with this very stry.

One f the tp surces f added sugar in children’s diets in America is in their breakfast cereal (麦片). A study published in the American Jurnal f Preventive Medicine shws that advertising drives sales f high-sugar cereals when it’s aimed directly at kids under 12 — but nt when it is designed fr adults.
In the study, researchers lked at all cereals bught by 77,000 U.S. husehlds ver a nine-year perid, between 2008 and 2017. They als lked at Nielsen ratings data, which clsely tracked all the ads that peple in a husehld saw — bth children and adults. The study shwed a clear cnnectin: mre ads fr children led t mre sugary cereal being bught by families. But ads fr adults did nt lead t mre buying. And these extensive data als shwed that behavirs that were learned in childhd culd track
int adulthd, which culd lead t pr health utcmes ver a lifetime.
The study is the first t directly cmpare the influence f fd ads aimed at children with thse aimed at adults. The findings ffer new evidence f hw fd marketing turns children int the “final weapn” in influencing family spending because they cntinuusly ask their parents t buy——an idea knwn as “pester pwer”.
The fd industry started the Children’s Fd and Beverage Advertising Initiative, a vluntary effrt t plice itself. The 21 participating fd cmpanies made a prmise t cut back n marketing unhealthy fds t children under 12 — later revised t under 13. A new study cnducted in 2024 shwed that children’s cntact with cereal ads n TV prgramming has drpped sharply.
But Lindsay Smith Taillie, a fd plicy researcher at the University f Nrth Carlina at Chapel Hill, says these vluntary effrts aren’t making a difference. Advertisements, like kids’ eyeballs, are mving nline, making it even harder t knw what marketing children are shwn, Taillie ntes.
What mainly drives children t buy sugary cereal?
Nutritinal value prmtin.B.Family breakfast traditins. C.Kid-fcused marketing strategies.D.Adult-centered advertisements.
What des the underlined phrase “pester pwer” in paragraph 3 mean?

C.Parents’ grwing spending.D.Children’s repeated buying requests.
What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
An expectatin fr further study.B.A limitatin f the research methd. C.The fllw-up influence f the study.D.The ptential applicatin f the findings.
What is Taillie’s attitude tward the vluntary effrts?
      Negative.B.Psitive.C.Uncncerned.D.Uncertain.

Anyne wh has taken a standardized test knws that writing an essay in 20 minutes r less takes serius brain pwer. Having access t artificial intelligence (AI) wuld certainly lighten the mental lad( 负担). But as a recent study by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT) suggests, that help may cme at a cst.
Over the curse f a series f essay-writing sessins, students wrking with as well as withut an AI chatbt had their brain activity measured. Acrss the bard, the AI users exhibited markedly lwer brain activity in areas assciated with creative functins and attentin.
Whether AI will leave peple’s brains weak in the lng term remains an pen questin. Researchers behind this study have stressed that further wrk is needed t establish a definitive causal link between elevated AI use and weakened brains. After all, the study had a tiny sample size and fcused n a single narrw task.
Mrever, generative-AI tls clearly seek t lighten peple’s mental lads, as many ther technlgies d. Cncerns abut this kind f fflading aren’t new. As lng ag as the 5th century BC, Scrates was quted as cmplaining that writing is nt “a ptin( 神 药 ) fr remembering, but fr reminding”. Calculatrs spare cashiers frm cmputing a bill. Navigatin apps remve the need fr map-reading. And yet few wuld argue that peple are less capable as a result.
There is little evidence t suggest that letting machines handle users’ mental tasks alters( 改变) the
brain’s capacity fr thinking. But the wrry is that generative AI allws ne t fflad a thught prcess. And nce the brain has develped a taste fr fflading, it can be a hard habit t kick. As ne user put it, “I rely s much n AI that I dn’t think I’d knw hw t slve certain prblems withut it.”
The technlgy is s yung that, fr many tasks, the human brain is still the sharpest tl in the tlkit. But in time bth the cnsumers f AI and its regulatrs will have t assess whether its wider benefits utweigh any cgnitive ( 认知) csts. If strnger evidence emerges that AI makes peple less intelligent, will they care?
What des paragraph 3 emphasize abut the MIT study?
The prcedures it fllwed.B.The limitatins in its design.
C.The cnclusin it has drawn.D.The diversity amng its participants.
Accrding t Scrates, what negative cnsequence culd writing have?
      Peple wuld avid using reminders.
      Peple wuld stp thinking independently.
Peple wuld rely less n their wn memry.
Peple wuld care less abut the spken wrd.
What pint des the user’s remark in paragraph 5 illustrate?
A.AI can change users’ mental capacity.B.AI is nt widely available t the public. C.AI can encurage users’ mental laziness.D.AI is nt capable f slving every prblem.
What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Will AI Make Yu Stupid?B.Hw AI Lets Yu Offlad Tasks
C.Why AI Affects Yur Thinking AbilitiesD.Is AI a Mental Shrtcut Yu Can Easily Quit?

I can’t remember hw many times I’ve been asked, “ 41 ?” My answer wuld always be the same: I’d want the ability t knw what peple are thinking. Abslutely, flying and invisibility (隐身) had crssed my mind. But every time, I’d always settle n reading peple’s minds.
