There has been grwing cncern abut “digital dementia” — the idea that excessive(过度的) dependence n smartphnes and the internet harms cgnitive (认知的) abilities. Hwever, recent research suggests that fr adults ver 50, these technlgies may actually have the ppsite effect. An verall analysis f nearly 60 studies invlving 410,000 lder adults fund that thse wh frequently used smartphnes, cmputers, and the internet were less likely t experience cgnitive decline cmpared t thse wh used them less.
Jared Benge and his clleague Michael Scullin at Baylr University in Texas searched the literature fr studies invlving the use f digital technlgies in peple ver 50. The team fcused n daily experience f dealing with digital technlgies, and excluded nes fcusing n gaming r brain training. This left 57 studies, mst f which were dne in Eurpe r Nrth America, but there were papers frm all arund the wrld, says Benge. “And the effects seem t be fairly cnsistent.”
Three key mechanisms(机制) that explain this effect, says Benge. First, digital activities are mre cgnitively engaging than passive nes like watching TV. Secnd, digital technlgy bsts scial cnnectins, fr instance, vide calls. Third, digital tls like GPS navigatin help lder adults maintain independence fr lnger, ensuring they dn’t get lst even if their way-finding abilities decline, fr example.
The main weakness is that the studies in the analysis relied n peple self-reprting hw much they used smartphnes, cmputers r the internet. In the future, technlgies such as screen-time mnitring culd prvide bjective measures. Benge als pints ut that the peple in these studies didn’t have smartphnes r internet access as children. “Des this play ut fr digital natives? This is a snapsht(快照) that’s encuraging, but the stry is nt dne being tld.”
That said, while the results f the meta-analysis are incnclusive, they suggest that lng-term technlgy use can be beneficial fr the brain and cgnitin, says neurscientist Dean Burnett. “This clearly challenges the cmmn quick judgment that that ‘technlgy equals bad’ in terms f brain and mental health.”
      47. What is the main finding f the recent research?
      A. Smartphne use leads t memry lss in senirs.
      B. Internet brwsing prevents all frms f dementia.
      C. Regular tech use shws cgnitive benefits fr the elderly.
      D. Vide games are better than scial media fr brain health.
      48. What was the main fcus f the studies included in the research?
      A. Digital habits in the elderly. B. Preferences fr scial media.
      C. Daily use f digital technlgies. D. Digital prgrams fr brain training.
      49. Hw might digital technlgy help lder adults stay independent accrding t Benge?
      A. By encuraging mre self reprting. B. By giving directins and lcatins.
      C. By discuraging scial interactins. D. By ding all their daily tasks autmatically.
      50. What is Dean Burnett’s attitude tward the research findings?
