Frests, grasslands and ther ecsystems take up CO₂ frm the atmsphere as they grw. When they decmpse(分解) r burn, this carbn is returned t the atmsphere. The uptake and release shuld generally be in balance. But ver the past half century, these ecsystems have tended t take up mre CO₂ than they have released, creating a carbn sink that varies in strength frm year t year.
This imbalance is thught t be due mainly t increased cncentratins f CO₂ in the atmsphere fertilizing plants, plus ther factrs like refrestatin. But it isn't expected t last frever because the climate cnsequences f rising CO₂ are catching up with the fertilizatin effect.
In 2023, researchers were cncerned when the land carbn sink nearly disappeared due t extreme wildfires, heat and drught. In 2024, the sink was expected t strengthen as there were fewer wildfires. But an internatinal research team fund that the sink was extremely weak again.
The researchers used satellite data n the greenness f the land's surface t calculate the prductivity f the planet's ecsystems, and therefre the amunt f CO₂ they tk up. They tk away frm this the amunt f CO₂ released in wildfires and by decmpsitin. They fund the land carbn sink in 2024 nearly disappeared.
Unlike in 2023, hwever, the researchers fund this weakening wasn't mainly driven by fires and dry weather. Instead, their analysis fund ht and wet cnditins sped up the rate at which rganic matter was decmpsing. Ecsystems als saw an increase in prductivity—— greenness reached recrd highs—— but this was utpaced by the ttal amunt f CO₂ released.
The disappearance f the sink fr the secnd-year running culd be a sign that it is declining earlier than expected. Hwever, Sctt Denning at Clrad State University says it culd be that the past tw years were a blip.“Yu need t be cautius interpreting even tw years f grwth as a persistent cllapse,” he says.
28. Hw is a carbn sink frmed?

B. Ecsystems absrb mre CO₂ than they release.

D. The applicatin f satellite data n greenness.
30. What caused the carbn sink t weaken in 2024?
A. Increase in plant prductivity.
B. Frequent wildfires and dry spells.
C. Weakened CO₂ fertilizatin effect.
D. Faster decmpsitin f rganic matter.
31. What des the underlined wrd“blip” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Temprarily. B. New beginning. C. Ptential challenge. D. Cnfirmed trend.

Digital design sunds harmless enugh. Dark patterns, less s. These are user interfaces (界面)that trick cnsumers int making chices they therwise wuldn't.
A buttn declining an ffer might read“Yes, I wuld like t miss ut n the bargain f the century”—— three times bigger and brighter than the ne fr“I'd just like the thing I came here fr.” The cancellatin jurney is s cmplicated that users frget their riginal gal.
Such practices are effective in the shrt term. A 2021 study by Jamie Luguri and Lir Strahilevitz frm the University f Chicag expsed samples f dark patterns when prmting a free trial f a service. Mild dark patterns, such as a chice between ne buttn marked“Accept and cntinue(Recmmended)”, and anther marked“Other Optins” made participants mre than twice as likely t prceed as members f a cntrl grup expsed t a simple“Accept” r“Decline” chice. Aggressive designs, such as frcing peple t click thrugh several screens in rder t decline the service, mre than quadrupled (四倍) the acceptance rate. Numbers such as these are hard fr bsses t dismiss.
Dark patterns aren't entirely evil. Sme designs are cntextually reasnable. Fr example, shwing few available htel rms helps users avid missing bkings. And mild persuasin is part f cmmerce.Advertising, as H. G. Wells, a scial critic put it, isn't“pure truth”, but nt cmpletely lying either.Cnsumers als distinguish misleading levels. A recent paper fund that peple bjected mre t artificially hiring a child actr t represent pverty in a village than t selecting real pr children.
Dark patterns spread easily, but lawmakers have cracked dwn n these practices. Last mnth, the Federal Trade Cmmissin reached a recrd $2.5bn settlement with Amazn, accuseing the cmpany f tricking cnsumers int signing up fr Prime subscriptins and making cancellatin unreasnably hard.In fact, the cmpany's practice backfired. A Stanfrd study by Nadeep Saini fund custmers feared verspending and fewer signed up fr aut-renewal than aut-expiratin (到期). Dark patterns harm cnsumers in a self-defeating way and firms as well, Saini nted.
32. Why des the authr mentin the“tw buttns” in Paragraph 2?
A. T highlight the ffer's appeal.
B. T explain dark patterns' ppularity.
C. T present custmers' behaviral patterns.
D. T shw the design's misleading effects.
33. What can be inferred abut the 2021 study?
A. Bsses dismiss cmplex interfaces.
B. Paid service sign-ups were its gal.
C. Mild designs utperfrmed aggressive nes.
D. Simpler ptins had a lwer acceptance rate.
34. Which best reflects a“cntextually reasnable” design?
A. Using child actrs t fake pverty.B. Hiding cancel buttns in sub-menus.
C. Displaying limited flight seats left.D. Frcing registratin t access cntent.
35. What can be a suitable title fr the passage?
A. A Study n Dark Patterns' Effectiveness
B. The Duble-Edged Nature f Dark Patterns
C. The Fight against Misleading Digital Design
D. A Hw-t Guide fr Digital Trick Identificatin
