Shay asked, “D yu think they’ll let me play?” Shay’s father knew that mst f the bys wuld nt want smene like Shay n their team, but the father als understd that if his sn, mentally and physically disabled, were allwed t play, it wuld give him a much-needed sense f belnging and sme cnfidence.
Shay’s father apprached ne f the bys n the field and asked if Shay culd play, nt expecting much. The by lked arund and said, “We’re lsing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning (局). I guess he can be n ur team and we’ll try t put him in t bat in the final inning.”

In the bttm f the eighth inning, Shay’s team scred a few runs but was still behind by three. In the tp f the final inning, Shay put n a glve and played in the field. Even thugh n hits came his way, he was bviusly jyful just t be in the game and n the field. In the bttm f the final inning, Shay’s team scred again. Nw, Shay was scheduled t be next at bat. The pitcher culd have easily thrwn the ball t the first baseman and Shay wuld have been ut and that wuld have been the end f the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right ver the head f the first baseman, beynd the reach f all teammates. The audience and the players frm bth teams started screaming, “Shay, run t first!” Never in his life had Shay ever run that far but made it t first base, wide-eyed and shcked.
Everyne shuted, “Run t secnd!” Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran twards secnd. By the time Shay runded twards secnd base, the smallest guy n their team, wh had a chance t be the her fr his team fr the first time, culd have thrwn the ball t the secnd baseman, but he understd the pitcher’s intentins and he, t, intentinally threw the ball high and far ver the third baseman’s head.
All were screaming, “Shay, Shay, Shay, all the way Shay.” Shay reached third base when ne ppsing player ran t help him and shuted, “Shay, run t third.” As Shay runded third, all were n their feet, crying, “Shay, run hme!” Shay ran t hme, stepped n the hme base and was cheered as the her wh wn the game fr his team.
That day, the bys frm bth teams helped bring a piece f true lve and humanity int this wrld. Shay didn’t make it t anther summer and died that winter, having never frgtten being the her and making his father s happy and cming hme and seeing his mther tearfully hug her little her f the day!

As the railrads and the highways shaped the American West in the past centuries, a new electrical generating (发电) and transmissin (输送) system fr the 21st century will leave a lasting mark n the West, fr better r wrse. Much f the real significance f railrads and highways is nt in their direct physical effect n the scenery, but in the ways that they affect the suuruding cmmunity. The same is true f big slar plants and the pwer lines that will be laid dwm t mve electricity arund.
The 19th century saw land grants (政府拨地) ffered t railrad cmpanies t build the transcntinental railrads, leaving public land in between privately wned land. In much f the West, sme f the railrad sectins were develped while thers remained undevelped, and in bth cases the landwnership has presented unique challenges t land management. With the cmpletin f the interstate highway system, many f the small twns, which sprang up as railway stps and develped well, have lst their lifebld and died.
Big slar plants and their pwer lines will als have effects far beynd their direct ftprint in the west. This is nt an argument against building them. We need alternative energy badly, and t really take advantage f it we need t be able t mve electricity arund far mre readily than we can nw.
S trade-ffs will have t be made. Sme scenic sprt will be sacrificed. Sme species (物种) will be frced t mve, r will be carefully mved t special accmmdatins. Deals will be struck t reduce the immediate effects.
The lasting effects f these trade-ffs are anther matter. The 21st century develpment f the American west as an ideal place fr alternative energy is ging t thrw ff a lt f pwer and mney in the regin. There are chances fr that pwer and mney t d a lt f gd. But it is just as likely that they will be spent wastefully and will leave new prblems behind, just like the railrad and the highway.
The mney set aside in negtiated trade — ffs and the institutin that cntrl it will shape the West far beynd the immediate ftprint f pwer plants and transmissin lines. S let’s remember the effects f the railrads and the highways as we cnstruct these new pwer plants in the West.
24. What was the prblem caused by the cnstructin f the railways?
A. Small twns alng the railways became abandned.
B. Sme railrad stps remained.
C. Land in the West was hard t manage.
D. Land grants went int private hands.
25. What is the majr cncern in the develpment f alternative energy accrding t the last tw paragraphs?
A. The transmissin f pwerB. The use f mney and pwer
C. The cnservatin f slar energyD. The selectin f an ideal place
26. what is the authr’s attitude twards building slar plants ?
A. CautiusB. ApprvingC. DubtfulD. Disapprving
27. Which is the best title fr the passage ?
A. Hw the Railways Have Affected the West
B. Hw Slar Energy Culd Reshape the West
C. Hw the Effects f Pwer Plants Can Be Reduced
D Hw the Prblems f the Highways Have Been Settled
C
Hllywd’s thery that machines with evil(邪恶) minds will drive armies f killer rbts is just silly. The real prblem relates t the pssibility that artificial intelligence(AI) may becme extremely gd at achieving smething ther than what we really want. In 1960 a well-knwn mathematician Nrbert Wiener, wh funded the field f cybernetics(控制论), put it this way: “If we use, t achieve ur purpses, a mechanical agency with whse peratin we cannt effectively interfere(干预), we had better be quite sure that the purpse put int the machine is the purpse which we really desire.”
A machine with a specific purpse has anther quality, ne that we usually assciate with living things: a wish t preserve its wn existence. Fr the machine, this quality is nt in-brn, nr is it smething intrduced by humans; it is a lgical cnsequence f the simple fact that the machine cannt achieve its riginal purpse if it is dead. S if we send ut a rbt with the single instructin f fetching cffee, it will have a strng desire t secure success by disabling its wn ff switch r even killing anyne wh might interfere with its task. If we are nt careful, then, we culd face a kind f glbal chess match against very determined, super intelligent machines whse bjectives cnflict with ur wn, with the real wrld as the chessbard.
The pssibility f entering int and lsing such a match shuld cncentrate the minds f cmputer scientists. Sme researchers argue that we can seal the machines inside a kind f firewall, using them t answer difficult questins but never allwing them t affect the real wrld. Unfrtunately, that plan seems unlikely t wrk: we have yet t invent a firewall that is secure against rdinary humans, let alne super intelligent machines.
Slving the safety prblem well enugh t mve frward in AI seems t be pssible but nt easy. There are prbably decades in which t plan fr the arrival f super intelligent machines. But the prblem shuld nt be dismissed ut f hand, as it has been by sme AI researchers. Sme argue that humans and machines can cexist as lng as they wrk in teams—yet that is nt pssible unless machines share the gals f humans. Others say we can just “switch them ff” as if super intelligent machines are t stupid t think f that pssibility. Still thers think that super intelligent AI will never happen. On September 11, 1933, famus physicist Ernest Rutherfrd stated, with cnfidence, “Anyne wh expects a surce f pwer in the transfrmatin f these atms is talking mnshine.” Hwever, n September 12, 1933, physicist Le Szilard invented the neutrn-induced(中子诱导) nuclear chain reactin.
28. Paragraph 1 mainly tells us that artificial intelligence may .
A. run ut f human cntrl
B. satisfy human’s real desires
C. cmmand armies f killer rbts
D. wrk faster than a mathematician
29. Machines with specific purpses are assciated with living things partly because they might be able t .
A. prevent themselves frm being destryed
B. achieve their riginal gals independently
C. d anything successfully with given rders
D. beat humans in internatinal chess matches
30. Accrding t sme researchers, we can use firewalls t .
A help super intelligent machines wrk better
B. be secure against evil human beings
C. keep machines frm being harmed
D. avid rbts’ affecting the wrld
31 What des the authr think f the safety prblem f super intelligent machines?
A. It will disappear with the develpment f AI.
B. It will get wrse with human interference.
C. It will be slved but with difficulty.
D. It will stay fr a decade.

In 1983, Hward Gardner, a prfessr at Harvard, published Frames f Mind: The Thery f Multiple Intelligences. In the bk, he presented ne type f intelligence that everyne must develp if they want t be successful. That is emtinal intelligence.

I’ve seen many peple d this n scial media, getting in arguments with lved nes ver trivial stuff because they have different pinins. This inability t master the self leads t many struggles and heartaches fr peple.
Emtinal intelligence des nt mean being vid (没有) f emtins. It means yu knw it is kay t be angry, just nt ut-f-cntrl angry.
