It had been mre than 10 years since they’d all been tgether like this, and the three sisters’ eyes were filled
with tears. The eldest, Rubye Cx, kept warm under a red blanket while her tw “kid” sisters, each held ne f her
hands. They retld their favrite stries, they laughed, and Rse even held 5-mnth-ld Leela, the newest member
f the extended family. Rse was 101 years f age, while Ruth was 104 and Rubye was 110. These three
centenarians were enjying an verdue reunin, thanks t Wish f a Lifetime, a charity that flew Rse frm Flrida
and Ruth frm Oklahma t visit Rubye in Rhde Island.
The charity is the passin prject f Jeremy Blm, a frmer Olympic skier and NFL player. During his years
traveling the wrld as an athlete, he was impressed by hw much mre ther cuntries and cultures seemed t
respect and celebrate their elders than what he’d witnessed in America.
Inspired by that, in the summer f 2008, Blm tk the steps t frm his charitable rganizatin, which
adapted the cncept f the Make-A-Wish Fundatin t serve the elders. Fr the first wish he helped realize, Blm
arranged fr airplane tickets fr a wman named Nancy, s she culd visit her daughter, wh was dying f cancer,
and say gdbye in persn.
Tday, Wish f a Lifetime has a staff f 26 full-time emplyees and sme 25,000 vlunteers natinwide, and
is funded by dnatins and crprate spnsrships. Mst wish applicatins are submitted at wishfalifetime.rg by
a friend r family member. The 3,000 wishes granted (实现) s far include a Wrld War II war her returning t the
beaches f Nrmandy, a wman writing and perfrming a play based n her life stry, and a frmer Air Frce
captain meeting the Rlling Stnes.
Wish f a Lifetime is nt Blm’s fulltime jb — he’s currently the CEO f X Games. But fr a lng time
the charity was his full-time fcus. “It was my 100 percent all in,” Blm says. “Let’s meet the senirs. Let’s

In tday’s wrld, it can feel difficult t cncentrate when yur smartphne buzzes (嗡嗡响) every minute r
tw with reminders abut updates, messages and much mre. Hw can anyne get thrugh a 500-page bk when
ur brain is addicted t bite-sized cntent?
Glria Mark, prfessr at the University f Califrnia, has spent much f her career analysing hw this affects
us. She has used sensrs t track attentin duratin n screens. When the studies started, in 2004, screen attentin
duratin was abut tw-and-a-half minutes, but recently, has drpped t 47 secnds.
Accrding t Prf Mark, there were “a lt f things” that had made peple mre distracted. “When yu switch
yur attentin duratin s rapidly, there are mre errrs. It takes lnger t d any task and peple get mre stressed.”
Aside frm making us perfrm tasks less effectively, the ease with which we get distracted by ne thing r anther
n the internet als means that we can waste time that culd be spent n activities cnsidered mre wrthwhile.
Peple wh have attentin disrder tend t have less grey matter in brain’s parietal crtex (顶 叶 皮 层 ),
highlighted Nilli Lavie, prfessr f psychlgy and brain sciences at University Cllege Lndn. “We see greater
grey matter vlume in certain regins f the brain fr peple with a better attentinal capacity,” Prf Lavie said.
The gd news is that while research has indicated that in tday’s wrld we switch ur attentin mre ften
than in the past, this change is nt thught t have becme hard-wired in ur brains. “The slutin is simple: first,
decide t fcus, then use strategies t remve distractins,” Prf Lavie said.
第 7页/共 14页
Related t this, ne strategy is t set an alarm that will g ff after, fr example, 20 minutes. And Prf Mark
advises peple t lk ahead t the end f the day and t cnsider hw they might spend time then, such as relaxing
n the sfa after cmpleting their wrk. “I want t feel accmplished because I’ve dne my wrk,” she said. “That
can help peple stay n track.”
28. What is the main prblem described in paragraph 1?
A. Peple find it a struggle t fcus. B. Bite-sized cntents are addictive.
C. Lng passages are utdated. D. Smartphnes ften disturb peple.
29. What can we knw abut the nline distractins?
A. They cause permanent changes t human brain.
B. They have similar influences n different peple.
C. They increase the pssibility fr peple t make errrs.
D. They ffer peple cnvenience t deal with varius affairs.
30. What des Prf. Mark advise in the last paragraph?
A. Set frequent alarms t take shrt breaks.
B. Create a flexible timetable t wrk efficiently.
C. Visualize after-wrk leisure time t keep daily fcus.
D. Seek a relaxing envirnment t minimize distractins.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Save Yur Brain t Stay Relaxed B. Can We Reclaim Our Lst Fcus?
C. Why Are We Lsing Cncentratin? D. Bite-sized Reading Ruined Our Brains

The Parker Slar Prbe (探测器), the fastest bject ever made by human hands, surfs the slar winds at mre
than 630,000 kilmeters per hur. That’s mre than 500 times the speed f sund n Earth. Its missin? T tuch
the Sun — and, ideally, t avid verheating in the prcess. It achieved this gal in 2021, when the prbe flew by
Venus and traveled thrugh the Sun’s utermst atmsphere. Since then, it has carved clser and clser paths,
revealing extrardinary details abut ur star. On its clsest apprach, it’s expected t crss within 4.5 sun lengths
away frm the slar surface. And it will tlerate temperatures f 1,500℃.
Unfrtunately, there’s a limit t just hw clse Parker can get. And there are questins scientists can’t answer
withut prbing even deeper int the slar atmsphere. Hwever, prbing deeper int the crna (日 冕 ) —
withut verheating, explding, r falling directly int the Sun — is an enrmus engineering challenge.
第 8页/共 14页
The first challenge is directing the prbe’s path. A prbe falling directly twards the Sun wuld likely pick up
s much speed in its fall that it wuld either crash r be thrwn in the ppsite directin. T avid this, the Parker
Slar Prbe made a series f cmplicated rbital mvements arund Venus, s that it culd readjust its rbit and get
clser by using the Venus’s gravity t slw dwn. But these current rbital tricks can nly get us s far.
As fr the extreme heat, the Parker Prbe used a strategy that is like sitting under a beach umbrella. Its
instrumentatin is packed behind a heat shield (屏障) just 4.5 inches thick, which can nly get s clse t the Sun.
T get even clser, researchers at NASA’s Innvative Advanced Cncepts prgram have develped tw nvel
shields which they believe culd surf a prbe as clse as 1 sun length frm the surface. But we wn’t knw fr sure
until these shields are subjected t final testing.
At these clse distances, we might discver the unknwn things and learn hw t better predict slar behavirs.
Thus, we’d get an unprecedented lk at ur star — far beynd what any telescpe has ever captured — and
perhaps ne day, with the Sun’s assistance, at ur mst distant neighbrs.
32. What can we knw abut the Parker Slar Prbe frm paragraph 1?
A. It can reach the exact surface f the Sun. B. It can travel as fast as the sund n Earth.
C. It wuld help explre mre abut the Sun. D. It wuld maintain itself when getting t the Sun.
33. Hw des the Prbe manage t avid crashing?
A. By picking up much mre speed.
B. By mving in the ppsite directin.
C. By readjusting its distance t the Sun.
D. By taking advantage f Venus’s gravity.
34. What can we infer abut the tw nvel shields?
A. They lk like beach umbrellas.
B. They remain at a cnceptual stage.
C. They get thicker than the Prbe’s shield.
D. They are expected t be mre heat-resistant.
35. What des the underlined wrd “unprecedented” in paragraph 5 prbably mean?
A. Imaginary. B. Extrardinary. C. Unpredictable. D. Ideal.
