My disinterest in “The Beautiful Game” has been lifelng. At primary schl, my classmates spent their lunch break playing ftball, while I was in the library burying myself in bks and cmputers. In Games lessns, like all fat kids, I was put “in defence” — which invlved chatting t my mates and ccasinally pretending t be bthered abut where the ball was. Occasinally, they’d fllw up with, “Oh, are yu a rugby man? Er, basketball?” — questins equally unhelpful, because f my ttal indifference (漠不关心) t any sprt except the Olympics.
This attitude f mine, I culd see, had clsed hurs f cnversatin and even ptential friendships. I culdn’t change the fact that I fund ftball bring, but was cming t regret my utsider status as much as I celebrated it.
